  1. I've been a volunteer firefighter for a decade or so, and was motivated by a lot of the same things your kid is. I grew up farming (I farm now full time) but I was practicing law full time when I started doing and I was motivated by a desire to help out in the community and get back to doing some honest to goodness real god damn work. Farming full time keeps me away from a lot of calls, but I plan to do at least another 5 years, and have found the experience to be extremely rewarding. If I was doing things all over again, I would strongly consider telling young Al to get into full time career fire service. But to @BabaYaga's point, you will see some shit. I'm just a volunteer and I've seen plenty of dead bodies (we respond to all car accidents in our district). The worst thing I was ever a part of wasn't even a fatality though - it was a lift assist (that's when EMTs need more man power to physically remove a sick or injured person) on a bed ridden 500 lb man who thought he was having a heart attack. We go into the house, and all you could smell was BO and shit. There were pizza boxes everywhere. He was in bed naked, and shitting himself into a bed pad. His feet were swollen and purple and the skin was peeling off. I actually had to run out the front door and vomit into the bushes before I could really help carry him to the ambulance. I told my chief later in the week that that experience (of seeing someone who was alive but clearly decaying) was harder than any fatality I'd responded to. He agreed. So, yeah, buckle up, but I doubt he'll regret it and this may be his calling. Your kid sounds like a badass, IMO.
  2. He's comparing it to the best arena in the country, and to a clear top 10 arena in the country. I really don't think McKale is behind Hilton (and I'm obviously quite biased). At least it wasn't when we played there, or the other handful of Zona home games I've caught.
  3. That’s Drake’s game. Gonna either piss someone off big time in 2 weeks, or result in them getting blown out.
  4. Got my crusty old Drake Law hoody on. Go Dogs!
  5. I’m not a “Spotted Cow is overrated” guy, I’m more of a “Moon Man is underrated” guy.
  6. Agreed. But it’s also proven to be correct already
  7. The crazy part is that it might not be one of the 5 best beers that brewery makes
  8. This is excellent. Uncomfortably honest in a lot of spots. Ride to Roberts, Gravelweed, Eileen, and Good While It Lasted are my favorites
  9. Watching Arch Madness makes me pine for the days of WSU and Creighton in the Valley. I saw the Van Vleet squad lose to UNI in Cedar Falls. Halcyon days for that league. Both WSU and UNI finished Top 15 that year.
  10. Go Dogs! (Drake)
  11. It's their playbook everywhere. I keep trying to tell my dad this (he's a Democrat) and he tells me I'm being cynical. Of course, he also said I was dreaming up crazy hypotheticals when I told him in 2016 that if Trump ever got elected, he'd refuse to leave office peacefully.
  12. Beats the hell out of me. But Jason Isbell and I are both guitar players in the same way that Aaron Donald and I were both defensive linemen.
  13. That's kinda wild. I didn't think you could effectively sound a string above the capo.
  14. This Isbell song has always struck me as appropriate for that day as well.
  15. I went to bed when we were down 20 because I had to get up at 4 to push snow. Not regretting that one bit.
  16. I think Greenspoint posted that picture because we'd never believe it was a real place when he inevitably posts that it closed.
  17. This is my one and only "raw tomato on a sandwich" exception. And a fine one it is.
  18. If anyone's curious in outsider (who has visited a fair amount) perspective... Texas is kind of a mini United States inside the United States. Because it is so fucking big, it encompasses a dramatic mix of landscapes and biomes. It has a unique blend of cultural influences from the Spanish who set up missions, Mexicans who came north, Germans and Czechs who came overseas, and settlers from the American southeast who brought slavery (and therefore a major African influence) with them. This fairly unique stew of influences created some truly native cuisine and music - both of which are often really damn good. It also has the unusual (but not wholly unique) distinction of having been a sovereign nation for a brief period of time. All of this contributes to the mix of pride and exceptionalism that is simultaneously admirable and nauseating. It's admirable because having pride in one's home is an absolutely essential ingredient to ensure investment in that place's success, and Texans are fucking invested. It's nauseating because it helps breeds an incredible amount of insularity, ignorance, and tribalistic isolation. I think it's cool as hell that people in Texas fly the state flag everywhere and are fiercely proud of Texan artists and Texan cuisine. I think it's fucking ridiculous that Bud Light has to slap the state outline on the label to sell it's product. I'm almost positive I could stamp a lone star into cowpies, and sell them at Buccees. I'm also envious of how you can roll into some tiny town in absolute nowhere Texas and find a crazy good band tearing it up on a Saturday night. America right now is in the middle of being divided between urban and rural, and the differences in culture from one state to another are becoming less. Texas is politically in the same place as all other states controlled by Republicans. The unique spirit of it's people seems to still come through, but who knows for how long. Who knows how long that will exist anywhere.
  19. Because our state governments are trying to outdo yours.
  20. Dude hit this. Just a legend.
  21. I used to trade for JK sours and farmhouses and absolutely love those beers. I'd buy them if I could, but I don't really have the time and energy to trade for beers these days.
  22. They’re absolutely jarring in that picture
