  1. We're going to Breck for two weeks in June/July.   Prices and availability suck.   Normally in March when you're looking for summer, there are tons of places.   We used to rent a place right outside of downtown by the Breck Brewery.   The place has doubled in price over the last 5-6 years.   The place we stayed last summer has gone up 25% in a year.    I think we'll like the place we found (west side under the Gondola line) but damn.

All I know is I'm going to sit outside, drink cold beer, do a little hiking/biking and generally be a mountain man for 2 weeks.

Church of Christ, oh how I adore thee.

Y'all make Baptists look like party animals. If there are worse places on Earth tan Abilene, TX and Sparta, TN, I don't want to know about them.

Can I interest you in a visit to College Station?

There's no separation.  There's no "he's left for the day" (again, if it is important, or someone I really want/need to talk to, I took those calls before).  People call and send you an email at 9:00 pm, and expect you to answer.

I had that issue before any of this ever started.    We've grown into a culture that has instant access to people.   The cell phone, instant messaging, etc. have all made too many people "always on."   I learned to break that habit during the pandemic.   I stopped sending emails at 7:45 at night or texting someone at 7:15 in the morning.   I made sure that my team knew that we needed to keep work in between X-Y hours of the day.   And we have done that for the most part.    I don't work the monstrous hours I used to partly because being home is more productive for me.  There are some issues when the kids are home on breaks or summer but I can overcome that.   In the office, there were always WAY more interruptions than at home.

I've managed a team where more than half of my people are in a different city than me for 2.5 years now.  I was already "remote" based on some them not sitting in the same building as I was.   And they're trainers.   Training remotely sucks big time.   But managing doesn't.

I personally want to keep working from home.  I avoid the 1.5-2 hour commute, I see my family way more than before and I have learned how to really manage my time and my team's time effectively.   I know zoom and webex don't replace the water cooler but I probably talk to my remote people (out of Houston) more know than I did when I sat at my desk in the office.   The trade off is less communication with my boss and the ones in Houston that report to me but it's been far more of a benefit than a hindrance.

I know my company is trying to reduce it's footprint in Houston.  We own several buildings and hundreds of thousands of square feet of office space.  They'd be thrilled to rent that to someone else and save on the costs.  I'm OK with that.   Someone else mentioned upthread about being able to move and work from wherever you want.   That's what I'm hoping for.   Once the Macanudo-ette's get off to college, I'd love to pick up and move somewhere besides being stuck on Houston.

My understanding is that a cuck would be the type of guy that watches another man insult and belittle and humiliate his wife, not do anything about it, and shortly thereafter dedicate significant amounts of time to advance the other man's career and finances.

    That's a Cancruz.

As in “Wang Dang?” Shame on you.

I’d go for “jellyroll” because you’ve got to admit that that sweet, sweet jelly’s so good.

Buck....   I want you to get straight up to Phu Bai.   Captain January will need all of his people.

  6. I think these last few posts have zeroed in on what Abbott's doing and its shoring up the base.    West is a possibility and will definitely appeal to the Trumpers.  Abbott fending off an attack.   One can only hope that West tries to primary him and the batshit craziness goes to 11.   If the Dems can run someone competent maybe we have a shot?

So, did you get competing job offers? What did you decide? Can't leave us hanging.

Nope but they both have openings that have a lot to do with what I do now.   But these responses along with what I have heard from others, I'm too old and enjoy my time off too much for either environment.

Best thing ever about Wichita Falls was a bar called Frank's 8 Ball.   They sold beer, wine and setups.  Frank Goff was a retired WWII fighter pilot and played trumpet with Jack Teagarden and Glenn Miller and was Buddy Holly's pilot for a short period of time.  He looked a lot like Jackie Gleason and would put a finger in his ear when he took a shot of whiskey.   I later learned it was because of ear damage from the war and when he tilted his head back, he would lose his balance.  In the late 70s and early 80s, he and his buddies would sit around all day and tell stories and listen to jazz on the juke box.  Then at night, they would break out their instruments.  It was great fun.  They had a lady who would sing with them.  She looked like a movie star from the 40s.......we would always request "Satin Doll" and she would get such a kick out of it and start flirting with us.

I LOVED going in there during the day time and talking with all of those vets and grew to love them.  Then, about 10pm their wives would come up to Frank's, come in thru the back door and take them home.  Next day, they would be there again.

Then one day, Frank and his wife go out of town and their son signed a local cover band to play.   They played Pretenders, Police, U2, Marshall Crenshaw, Costello, etc.  The place was PACKED and when Frank got back and saw all of the money, he was a fan.  Once a month, they would fill that place up and Frank even started having some Dallas bands come in.  "About 9 Times" was probably the most well known of that bunch.  Frank would get drunk and get on stage and play with the bands...and they all loved it.  I got to be good friends with Frank and his wife and worked there for a short time.

I was waiting for to say that SRV and Double Trouble was there.

Yes, one that just pops up now and then throughout the next 4 years.   He'd never know when or where.   You send one full time, he could get a restraining order, I would think. Always play the same songs too.
