I dont have any words of wisdom but of anybody needs someone to talk to send me a pm. Ive been through my fair share of grief and being on both sides of the alcoholic life (myself as the drinker and family members.)
I stopped about 3 and a half years ago and my life is better for it.
Nimitz had his hands full dealing with Halsey's health (and impetuousness) plus guys like Kelly Turner. Turner was good at what he did (amphib landings) but was also a raging asshole.

I saw something on Reddit earlier asking if Teddy Roosevelt, Jr was a good officer. He had his faults as a leader but his actions on D-Day (and his sneaky effort just to be in on the landing) were ballsy. One of the posters mentioned Rick Atkinson's trilogy (North Africa, Siciliy/Italy and France) are good reads for those who have not done so.
Ian Toll also has a trilogy about the war in the Pacific that are worth reading.
