  1. I will give Dick Cheney credit for this one, singular thing: after leaving office he demonstrated more personal integrity than any living male member of the Bush family. As catastrophic as the consequences of his actions have been, his was not the final say. That belonged to President Bush, who despite leading the world into calamity has enjoyed a reputational rehabilitation he does not deserve. While Bush, his brother and his nephew remained silent on the existential threat to the Republic represented by Trump and Trumpism, Cheney and his daughter rang the alarm bells. America is in terminal decline in part because of his career, but I’ll give him that much credit.
  2. The shame of it is that I like most of these players a lot. Klay is washed and Caleb Martin is not a full time NBA caliber basketball player but the rest of them are terrific supporting cast and for their own good and the franchise I’d like to see everyone older than PJ Washington traded for picks to playoff teams.
  3. Indeed. Ultimately lost home affordability is the problem that’s destroying AISD, along with everything else good about Austin. $3.50

  5. Paying a reasonable price to enjoy a tasty, satisfying breakfast in a pleasant cafe to own the libs.
  6. This reminds me- there’s another property I’m looking at, which has been an STR for a very long time. The lot is appraised fairly at around 800, and the improvement is appraised around the same. That said, if it’s not a tear down it is at the very least a remodel down to the studs. Why wouldn’t the owner protest?
  7. Cabinets aside, it really is a gorgeous house. I don’t love the lot but the house is extremely well designed and flows beautifully. We have no interest in a 5/4 house right now as empty nesters and we are looking at something different nearby, but that house will be a pretty attractive deal for somebody at 2.7-2.8M
  8. This fucking franchise

  10. I use all powders and my chili is the fucking bomb. Go and do likewise. It’s in the Bible.* *Luke 10:37
  11. If only. Trust me. I go WAY back in this town. Our voters suck in an organic way. It’s an even split of rootless transients, cheap hayseeds dimwit progressives and grouchy oldtimers (my category). Our entire civic culture has been broken since the Kocureks died.
  12. If you say so. I think it’s about whipping voters into ignoring the simple fact that almost 40% of general fund expenses go to support a police force that treats crimes in progress as a low priority when multiple cars show up to traffic stops. But sure. Tell me more about $4000 worth of lunches. To paraphrase Ric Flair, I spend more money on spilt liquor.
  13. Probably better on a diet than Sweetgreen
  14. Strip joint ATM withdrawals don’t count as meals.
  15. You raise an interesting question. I wonder if there’s a single senior executive working in the CBD of a large American city who expenses less than $5000 on meals in an average year…
  16. This is for people who think Judge Holden and the Glanton gang are the good guys.
  17. Of course there are lots of things that could be cut. And if you ran for office or volunteered your time to contribute to the budget process you could help make that sausage. Otherwise, you get an up or down vote, assuming you live in city limits. Now, for me, this was close to a coin flip but there’s enough necessity involved that my choice was to vote for this. And, because I am close enough to city politics to know who is orchestrating the opposition, my personal disdain for their motives exceeds my disdain for the budget package. That said, take heart! I am convinced Prop Q will fail, and we’ll continue to drift back towards the traditional Austin model of underinvestment by design.
