Government Shutdown 2025: This Time Itās Personal
My daughter brought me these from the grocery store she visited in Latvia. Long Chips are kind of like Pringles, but long.

Considering that most of my extremely limited exposure to the former comes through my experience with the latter, it doesnāt seem like much of a leap.

Every map of the United States that shows the concentration of a bad thing is the same map. And look, I want the best for those people because they are my people. But they also keep voting for people who put them in harmās way. It was always going to come to this. The sooner they understand that, the better. The Coal miners didnāt die at Matawan for their descendants to vote for scabs.- The Democratic Party

I want to be clear up front that I donāt think āgovernment shutdownsā should be a thing and that legislation should be passed to automatically continue funding. That said- for 30 years I have watched Republicans use the threat of shutdowns to bully Democrats into compliance, by holding a gun to the head of their own voters and forcing Democrats to be adults in the room. This is the first time the Democrats have said āpull the trigger,ā and it has clearly unnerved the GOP caucus. Iām not sure where this ends, but as a matter of strategy they are in a far stronger position than they would have been had they rolled over again.- The Democratic Party
The name was the best part. It was an instant hit and almost sunk Clinton in 2016, and a lot of otherwise apolitical working class people who wound up voting for Trump wanted it. anyway- a large majorities of independents and Democrats want everyone to have coverage, want their coverage to cost them less, and understand that the government will be involved. Thatās all most people hear when they hear the words Medicare for All. Democrats, being morons, took that fact and decided to get wound around the axle about precisely what policy that meant annd fight amongst themselves instead of focusing on outcomes during campaigns. Thatās a recipe for lost support. Incidentally thatās why I think Elizabeth Warren is so toxic - all her wonky, complicated āIāve got a plan for thatā specificity is the shit that kills democrats, not great brands like Medicare for All.- NBA 2025-2026 Season Thread

Well, these were Democrat political professionals. What were you expecting? It was, but the nice thing about reality is that you can think whatever you want and it will still be true. Frontline Narrator: But they had insulated themselves that completely. The follow up from the prospective candidate was predictably inane: āso whatās the answer, guys? Do you think capitalism has let you down?ā Honestly not bad.- anybody tip the hotel cleaning staff?
Iām surprised a company that size didnāt have a diminimis reimbursable expense policy. When I worked for a huge global industrial company we didnāt need a receipt for anything under $75. And before you point out the obvious, Iām sure there was some light abuse, but when the company did the math, it wasnāt worth policing, because serious abusers operate on a different level.- The Democratic Party
I was in a meeting a few weeks ago with a group of Democrats between 25 and 35, a person whoās thinking about running for office, and a couple of longtime Democratic consultants. The perspective candidate and the consultants were shocked that the young Democrats said that cost-of-living was their biggest issue and healthcare was their second biggest issue. They were also shocked that the group was unanimous that the Democratic party had allowed housing and healthcare costs to destroy their prospects of attaining the American dream. This thread is a beating because this party is feckless, toothless, spineless, out of touch and has institutionalized losing. The national party has followed the example of the Texas Democratic Party, and is achieving the same results.- The Democratic Party
No, thatās false. Itās not just wrong on the merits of that, itās also not aligned to the voting behavior of so-called centrists. Heterodox voters do not occupy some kind of very policy-oriented middle ground between small and big government or high and low taxes. Medicare for All is objectively and empirically great branding. It was great on style and great on substance. Itās clear, immediate, certain, and tangible. It combines a popular thing with a universal thing, for everyone it alienated it picked up two, and it worked across the map. Itās old news now and they need to move to something new, but it didnāt cost Democrats anything and they should t have squandered it. Stop thinking in GOP framing. But Lamb didnāt win. Fetterman won, heās popular, heās interesting, and heās not MAGA. You donāt have the luxury of choosing alies until your party stops losing the races that count. Except the election that he won in a swing state, Jesus.- The Democratic Party
No, Iāll give you Sinema because she stopped being a co-belligerent but Fetterman and Manchin are exactly what Iām talking about Democrats welcoming more of. And if they donāt want to do that they should try not losing so much. Sorry!- The Democratic Party
No. Being chickenshit about Universal Healthcare doomed the Democratic Party. āGreen New Dealā sucks*, Medicare for All is great branding and a great call to action. * and I love the idea of a Green New Deal- The Democratic Party
Exactly. Not a hard call. Iām not sure he knows how to fight them, but he recognized early on what weāre collectively up against and broke with it at great personal and professional cost. Same deal with Liz Cheney. Weāre fighting for our lives here. Democrats need to understand that being in the opposition means accepting the co-belligerents who are willing to work with Democrats to defeat a common threat. Whether inside or outside of the party, thereās no reason to worry about policy differences unless and until they win.- The Democratic Party
Not in any race I can vote in. But for the record - itās not a hard call. In the current environment, if my choice is a Republican vs ex-Republican Iām voting against the Republican.- Wordle [spoilers inevitable but discouraged]
