2021 - Is inflation finally back in the conversation?
Bozo_Casanova replied to Reagan1k's topic in Business and Markets
Im not sure thatās true. We are certainly in a big debt cycle, but a bunch of deflationary signs are beginning to appear that could be significant. And as long as the dollar is the worldās reserve currency we will have less inflation than the rest of the world, just like we did in the transitory spike period. in other words, we have real problems on the horizon. Inflation could be the least of them. We certainly agree on that at least, but the issue here is that the Fed knows that. The political actors who want to control the Fed donāt. -

Maturing treasuries and MBS. See my post above re assets. Who are you arguing with? Again I get that you donāt like having a central bank, but you do, and they manage the supply of a fiat currency. They inject liquidity into the economy and then take it out. -

Bozo_Casanova replied to Reagan1k's topic in Business and Markets
Hereās the short version: during the pandemic the Fed purchased a shitload of low- rate treasuries and MBS to stimulate the economy. When the economy recovered there was an inflation spike and rates were raised, which means those assets on the aged balance sheet were marked down, and the value of that markdown was about $1T, recorded as a deferred asset. What that represents is the book value of the securities the Fed owns vs the current market price. -

But as it happens, in this moment in history, the global economy revolves around monetary policy set by central banks, and the United States Federal Reserve is the most successful central bank in history. The fact that you believe a counterfactual alternative reality without central banking would be better doesnāt make it less so. No. It was the transfer of tangible goods from overseas and the value of future productivity TO you and me, in exchange for exported and punted debt. And thatās a problem, but we weāre the beneficiaries. Again, plenty of room for criticism here but your understanding of victimhood is backwards. I didnāt- the fed recorded it that way. Try to keep up. -

Obviously not, no, because I understand what it is. And to be clear Iām not saying that the recording of unrealized loss as a deferred asset is good but I understood what led to it, and what it means in terms of monetary policy. you donāt seem to understand what the loss is that you are talk about. Youāre acting like the ālossā was the result of mismanagement or malfeasance. -

Youāre not The Texas Hammer from Hornfans? Cheerfully withdrawn, in that case. What does a successful central bank look like to you? -

The other issue is a lack of credibility. Long term rates are a function of the sense that the American banking system is independent and neutral to politics. This is political horseshit. While the Fed has always been political, it has also always been independent. Thatās not a āRogue agencyā thatās an independent central bank operating in a free market. Well, it managed to keep a fiat currency operating as the worldās value reserve for 50 years, allowing people like you and I to enjoy tax cuts and fairly stable prices over a long period by exporting debt to other countries and getting imported tangible goods in return, so it seems pretty successful to me. If that looks like failure to you, Iām curious what you think a successful central bank looks like. Iām old enough to remember when I was on Hornfans shouting from the rooftops about position of the dollar and the the exploding debt while you were caping for the 2003 Tax cuts and increased structural deficits as far as the eye could see, not to mention the Iraq war. If you really want to do this take it to the Cloak Room. And bring your shine box.- 7994 replies

1) Trust me, you will know when we get there. But by then it will be too late. It might already be. 2) The free press? All they do is bear witness as the light go out. And besides, in a modern autocracy, tolerating a critical press is one of the ways they maintain the fiction of democracy. 3) The court are a jump ball right now, and the autocratics have length advantage. The Dems have a defensive-PG out there. 4) Thank you, but I donāt actually think there are many of us. 5) Finally, this is not about Trump. Trump is a symptom. The AEI (the last traditional conservative think tank published that piece in 2012. Norm Ornstein and other conservative political scientists started ringing alarm bells about this well over a decade ago. Iām far less concerned about Trump than I am about what the office of the President will be capable of without any checks and balances.

Actually a great example of normal shittiness- Hunter Biden, well connected son of politicians who parleys that into medium sized money, only to get shamed and charge with a crime, brings shame on whole family. The first family- issues a meme coin and other projects to monetize the executive branch and sell favors immediately upon taking office, while simultaneously dismantling non-partisan bureaucracies. This is the South America playbook- to dismantle institutions and make leaders the source of services. You donāt need to make free speech illegal when the lives and fortunes of your subjects are dependent on your favor.

This is a dangerous misunderstanding of the situation in this country. first- the purpose of the two parties is to coordinate effort and win elections, but the most important function they played traditionally is to coopt and neutralize radical outsider factions. The Democratic Party has a radical outsider element of around 15%. While noisy, this faction is contained and has no power. The Republican Party has been radicalized. It is now an insurgent outlier party with only 15-20% of its base occupying a political space in the traditional American conservative tradition. Theres a ton of formal political science research backing up that conclusion, since well before Trump. Trump is just their avatar. The Democratic Party sucks in the normal way of political parties but is in no way controlled by its extreme. The fact that you think it is demonstrates a poor media diet or perhaps normalcy bias. As most people here should have understood long ago, I have not thought of myself as a Democrat in a decade, and am not any sort a of progressive. But I do consider myself a co-belligerent of the Democrats because The Republic and the institutions that hold up civilization are facing existential risk from within the political system. We are drifting towards South American style authoritarian kleptocracy.

I donāt think you can overstate how challenging this is to the worldview theyāve cultivated in their base and how shook they are at an individual level. This was posted by elderly friend who is former Texas GOP officer on FB a 10 days ago. Thereās a lot of textual anxiety here. He usually posts something political 3-4X/week and hasnāt posted a thing about Trump or anything directly partisan since. I think itās possible that the only lie they wonāt accept under any circumstances is that there is no conspiracy. āOPINION.....EPSTEIN'S DEATH....i don't for a second believe he committed suicide. Dr, Baden a very respected medical examiner said the hyiod bone was not broken. every cop in cop 101 is taught that a broken hyoid bone is evidence of a suicide by hanging or strangulation. the fact that the two guards were not observing a high profile prisoner and the tape of his cell mysteriously malfunctioned suggests coverup. a prisoner interviewed that was in that cell stated there was no possibility of anything that could have been used to do a suicide by hanging. in all likelihood he was smothered to death. Epstein had nothing to lose, even if he got life, he would have been housed in a prime federal facility and could have written an expose. and do you think for one minute the names on the list and people in those tapes would have not gotten him the best of the best, chances are he would have been out on parole in 18 months. rermember, he killed no one. now the fact that Trump, Kash and Bongino, all highly respected for truth bearers suddenly are claiming suicide leads me to believe that the list and tapes contained in addition to reputation damage information and maybe pedophile charges highly valuable leverage, against some future adversary, there could be no other reason for such an obvious coverup other than an intelligent chess move. the fact that Epstein's woman is still alive just suggests that she was smart enough to put the word out that three client list and sets of tapes exists, all given to unnamed parties to be given to the media upon her having any sudden and suspicious death, another intelligent chess move. who do you believe? -
