  1. Seems appropriate to the thread at this moment
  2. Thanks to this thread I listened to Veruca Salt, L7, Slant 6, Bratmobile, Bikini Kill, Hole, Sleater Kinney and The Donnas at the gym this morning. Also listened to Bloomberg Radio.
  3. I’m obviously not an insider, but based on what I see, it seems similar to our population level approach to global warming: there’s this pervasive sense that things are comprehensively fucked, but it’s so pervasive that we’re still surprised when a specific terrible things happen.
  4. I know some lobbyists in Austin who work on both sides of the aisle, and despite everything they are still clinging to the fantasy that it’s business as usual. A couple days ago I mentioned to one in passing that Paxton was doing to beat Cornyn by 8-10 and they looked genuinely shocked that I thought that, like I had gone off the deep end with the crazies. The last time they looked that shocked was when I said Donald Trump would run away with the 2016 nomination.
  5. Not a plumber or electrician, but I recently met a nurse who was also an LGBT Harvard grad, and I think she said her wife was a plumber, presumably also LGBT.

  7. I just started reading Michener‘s “Poland”, so this hits close to home.
  8. 19 years ago today Dirk dropped 50 on the Suns, which I remembered, but sometime since then I had forgotten that there was once an NBA player named Tim Thomas.
  9. Only if you want Joni Ernst to be your next president

  11. Yeah! Women deserve the equal opportunity to do what Donald Trump does!
  12. I was always more of a Veruca Salt guy, but still
  13. For the record I am 100% more interested in saving the republic than places on the left-right spectrum.
  14. I had a ‘prescription’ manhattan this afternoon, followed by two prescription margarita with floaters and a half bottle of prescription champagne. Hopefully the other half will get me out of this mental hole.
  15. In all seriousness, this is a great point and it really does come down to this. Because Democrats they have detached themselves from the politics of class they were still operating under the old model that if you had full employment, the economy was good, or at least it would feel OK to most people. But because the operating political model of the Republican Party is built on exploiting income inequality, they understood correctly that most employed people were feeling a lot of pain from inflation, that middle class people would be the most acutely aware of the problem, and they messaged their campaign accordingly. Biden’s team realized what was happening eventually, but by the time they reacted, it was too late.
