  1. That’s not good. That’s the kind of thing that can grow legs.
  2. I'm legit worried it's going to be like the Hoover Institution is today - a perpetually embarrassing association with the University that we can't separate ourselves from.
  3. If I was a smart person who nevertheless bought into GOP economic nostrums for another decade following the conclusive results of the 2001/2003 tax cuts I might step back and check myself for internalized assumptions.
  4. 1) as I said, I’m in cognitive decline 2) he’ll always be Todd to me
  5. It makes a nice Manhattan
  6. In which very odd person and former UT Phrenology Dept head Richard Hanania spits out the bitter truth
  7. @immamac this is why we need the "fuck you" + rep reaction
  8. I was friends in high school with the guy who played Todd the waiter in Office Space. He had been a child actor, and unfortunately his biggest adult role was so iconic that it made him Todd, forever. Also his name is actually Todd. He did some voice work but otherwise unable to find roles years later he waited tables at Bennigans to make ends meet. Acting is a tough business. He's a location scout now.
  9. It's crazy that they just spiked a two year old essay when people outside their weirdo bubble finally noticed it, literally today.
  10. Here’s an interesting stat from GE Morris. Kinda underscores the Shapiro as obvious choice thing. small sample size though
  11. Take with a grain of salt but this is a real journalist. In the thread he speculates that this could backfire if true. if it is true, I’d lean more towards thinking it’s a weekend trial balloon, since it’s Friday afternoon
  12. It helps when you have the power to raise the dead from their graves
  13. Thank you that's very kind. There's a lot of work in the political science field on this topic and the easiest way to characterize it is that the VP pick matters, but not in the sense of delivering a discrete result from a place or group. Where it seems to have the greatest effect is in positively or negatively reflecting on the judgment and priorities of the Presidential candidate, in that it's a reflection of what they think is important. in other words - of course it helps if your VP is popular in a battleground state and how much is a matter of degree, BUT it's hard to find an example of a VP "delivering" a close or battleground state. Bentsen didn't deliver Texas, Gore didn't deliver (or subsequently win) Tennessee. Biden already had Delaware, but arguably helped a little in PA. That said - the VP choice says a lot about the presidential candidate. Palin told the world McCain was desperate and would cater to the weirdos in the GOP. Biden told older white people that Obama wasn't a revolutionary. Cheney told the money guys that Bush was serious about playing ball. Kaine told America that Hillary couldn't handle a strong #2 and thought she had the election in the bag. Vance tells coomers with waifu pillows that Donald Trump understands their loneliness. So, part of why I give a slight edge to Walz over Shapiro is that while Shapiro is very popular in a crucial state, Walz conveys the desire to return to normalcy - the idea that it's important to laugh off the madness and go do stuff and be nice people. Shapiro is good at the politics of the moment, but nobody loves those, and conveys to Democrats that this is a must win election, but at what cost?
  14. good post. Shapiro has the highest floor and the lowest ceiling.
  15. maybe a better way of saying it is that he's the obvious choice, because he's popular in Pennsylvania, and it's hard to imagine winning without PA. And for the record - yes, I don't like the voucher thing but I don't live in PA. My main concern there is that it pisses off the teachers unions. the bigger issue with him is the sexual harassment thing with one of his aides, and the willingness of progressives to stay home plus the risk of alienating Arab-American voters and Lebanese voters in Michigan based on the Palestine thing. On the positive side, he possibly helps a LOT in Florida, which has overperformed in 3 elections with a black candidate at the top of the ballot. Speaking of representational choices involving Pennsylvania - in the leadup to the 1964 election against McClellan, Lincoln knew that the support of Pennsylvania and Germans in particular was critical to victory, and chose to promote an immigrant Prussian soldier and Pennsylvanian (and incidentally, a communist) named Alexander Schimmelfennig, despite him being scapegoated in the press for heavy losses at Chancelorsville and accused of cowardice at Gettysburg for sort of laying low at a house in town for a couple of days until things quieted down. The story goes that when Secretary of War Stanton protested that Alexander Schimmelfennig was unfit to be a brigadier general, Lincoln responded: “No matter about that, his name will make up for any difference there may be, and I’ll take the risk of his coming out all right.” Of course, he won Pennsylvania, and Lincoln evidently thought Alexander Schimmelfennig was crucial to continued support, because he was later honored to receive the surrender of Charleston.
