Not only that, but Judaism had only been mostly Monotheistic for a little over 5 centuries in the time of Christ. In other words, the core of the Old Testament is written from the perspective not of Rabbinic Judaism of Yahwism, where Yahweh is the regional God and there are others around, almost 1000 years before it became mostly monotheistic Judaism in the 6th century BC, when the Torah was sort of retconned into its current form. So not just the violence but the jealously makes a lot more sense when Israelites are considering throwing some burnt ends towards Baal. Also, Yahweh had a girlfriend, a creation deity named Ashereh, who was previously the wife or baby mama to the supreme god of the Canaanites, El, when Yahweh first emerges out of the desert as a storm god from the Peninsula before ultimately merging with El, like an Arabian Mr Ripley. And then Jesus shows up a a few hundred years later and says essentially- “stop arguing about the law, lawyers. The law is love. Love God, love your neighbor. That’s literally the whole thing.” And now 2000 years after that, fundamentalists are still confidently citing Leviticus when they explain how Jesus didn’t really mean what he said.

2024 - 2025 Dallas Mavericks Season Thread - This time we're not happy to just be here.
The Cuban interview on the DLLS podcast is good. Says in retrospect he wishes he put the Mavs out for open bid, and was also upset when he heard about the trade. Other stuff - the 2006 Championship was stolen - The NBA made them take out the part in the contract about operational control (Stein pushed back) - He still has a close relationship with the team, mentions Rick, Ethan, and says Patrick Dumont really wants to win. - Pretty clearly there’s no relationship or love lost with Nico - He’s very excited about Cooper Flag - The NBA is moving towards more PE concerns than what the fans want - He makes a good case why expansion probably isn’t in the cards anytime soon Oh and I don’t know what Overwatch is, but fire Nico

That’s no doubt real but my money is on sexual confusion and internalized guilt related to abuse of various kinds.

Mass Shootings
Glad you agree about red flag laws, but let me tell you from first hand experience- everything else is mostly wrong. I mean, we spend money on this stuff but what we do is in some ways worse than nothing. The largest provider of Mental Health services in Travis county and every other major urban area in this country is the county jail.

Btw I watched the video and paused on the note. Kid thought he was dying of cancer.

Oh, so then you agree that we need universal mental health care and red flag laws, yes?

Absolutely. But you were an evangelical at one point, and I’m assuming it left you with things that you are still processing.

One of the reasons I recommend that book to former evangelicals in particular is that I think it gives them a more authentic understanding of Christ’s gospel for what it actually is, which seems to help disentangle “Christianity” from the trauma they experienced. But I always recommend some Alan Watts along side it, because it’s important for you to understand that atheism or other forms of explicit rejection are also a form of evangelism, as Watts jokes in the video above that the atheist proclaims “there is no God and I am his prophet.” So it’s not a question of “going back” to God or Christianity or whatever, but seeing and accepting the reality that there is no meaningful distinction between without and within, and thus realizing that alienation is a fiction. Tat tvam asi. Thou art that. It’s true across time and people and teachings. The true religion is the religion of no religion, where things are one. That’s the promise, or heaven, or enlightenment, or nirvana, or whatever you want to call it. Whether we look to Revelation where it says that Heaven and Earth give way to a new Jerusalem, or in Buddhism where the there is no longer any temple or any gong, because the temple has become the whole world and the gong is all around.

Funny thing/Nightmare fuel about that Tec-9, since I’m going to assume that most of you are old enough to remember the issues associated with that gun.

I'm rereading this thread and it's really good. I also realize I made the same recommendation about Pope Francis and Alan Watts, but that was before JD Vance killed the pope and after he killed Watts (maybe) so it hits different.

Two things that this thread makes me think of: More acutely @Clintonaldo: Happiness in This Life: A Passionate Meditation on Earthly Existence Strongly recommended. And for those who reject Christianity coming from from a protestant fundamentalist background, this offers a very practical and easy to read understanding of how most non-fundamentalists see Christianity and the role of Christians in ther world. More generally - on religion: If you have time to read this thread this is also worth an hour

These guys are really good. They somehow made my Tec-9 slightly less shitty. I had not realized they moved from Pond Springs until a couple of weeks ago. That's where I picked up that SP5 Really? Where are they now?- Report: 14 billion dollar deal for Bullet train from Houston to Dallas is done
Almost certainly not, but it would be a very attractive option that would absorb additional demand more cost effectively and increase overall productivity. it’s a shame there’s such a leadership vacuum in this state. Once upon a time Texas was a destination for people with big ideas, it was a place that celebrated achievement and big things. We, Texans, literally tamed the western frontier and then immediately turned around and put a man on the moon. But now we’re dominated by these myopic, cheap, fearful old men who live in terror of cities and wind up spending lots of money subsidizing shit that doesn’t work very well like the I-10 expansion while chaining the future to their prejudices. - The Gun Owner’s thread
