  1. And for those who don’t know much about that, it truly is a significant achievement. Rickover’s absolute demand for excellence and the intense scrutiny on those vying to become nuclear officers is the stuff of legend in the nuclear Navy, especially in the submarine community. Definitely another testament to Carter’s strength of character and competence. Rickover didn’t suffer fools, weak men, or anything less than excellence.
  2. He may not have left the greatest presidential legacy, but he’s without a doubt the best human being to serve as President in my lifetime. A truly decent and great man who lived his post-presidency life in the service of helping others with genuine humility and compassion. I also salute him as a fellow wearer of dolphins being qualified in submarines. I hope his last days are spent in comfort and surrounded by his family. If only we had more like him.
  3. This is so true. It takes so much more than just sticking around, and it takes so much more than boring dad lectures. My high school aged kids are bombarded with all kinds of toxic personalities, both male & female, on social media and with in-person social situations. Then there’s the ever escalating political rhetoric and associated social fallout from all of this toxic tribalism. Modeling desirable and appropriate values, behavior, healthy relationships, strength & compromise in handling conflict resolution, empathy, self-care, service, etc, for my kids has always been important to me, but even more urgently these days. Being a “walk it like you talk it” positive male role model and dad is very mindful and deliberate. I won’t let my son become enamored with and emulate “men” like Cobra Tate and other self-described “alphas” of his ilk, and my daughter understands her worth and already has very high standards for the kind of young men she’ll allow in her social circle. My kids came out of a heartbreaking and rage-inducing situation of horrific abuse and neglect prior to me adopting them out of the foster care system. I’m fortunate and grateful that they acknowledge and appreciate my active parenting and the structure, safety, and stability I’ve provided. There have been rough patches, but I imagine there are different challenges parenting kids who have only known safety, security, and a loving home. I guess all of us have to fight to keep them from getting soft, spoiled, and susceptible to negative influence. Kinda TLDR version - The fight against the influence of these toxic morons is a deliberate commitment that doesn’t get won with fatherly advice alone. Be about it.
  4. Tinderbox is an album that has never left my regular listening rotation or playlist inclusion. Those songs influenced me as a drummer for a long time, then later on as a guitar player. Some of their stuff never resonated with me, but there’s plenty that holds up. Was afraid this was going to be an R.I.P. thread before opening.
  5. There was one thing that bothered me about that episode, and that was the scene with the raiders that attempted to breach the compound on the stormy night. With all of the meticulous planning and prepping by the self-described survivalist Bill, he goes out to battle the would be raiders with no body armor while firing from a completely exposed position in the middle of the street. I would have expected him to have a number of fortified positions from which to fire that would give him a significant advantage. Odd choice to show him do so many things all the way, but then go half ass when it came to planning for an actual shootout.
  6. Man, that was a top tier television episode. I haven’t felt a lingering emotional punch from a one-hour tv love story like that since the San Junipero episode of Black Mirror. The performances felt so genuine and intimate as to almost be voyeuristic. Bill and Frank. The love story from a mushroom apocalypse that I didn’t know I needed.
  7. Same here. I have two kids, 16 & 18, in a Hays CISD high school, and this has been an issue for a couple of years now. The increase of fentanyl overdoses in the past year has become terrifying. I appreciate the effort the district is making toward education, awareness, and prevention, but hate the necessity of it. I’ve been having the “no pills, no powder” discussion with them for years, but now they’re seeing that they have classmates overdosing and dying. I know they’re taking it seriously, but I won’t stop hammering the message into them. I know how much risky partying I did at their age in the 80s, but these days it just isn’t as safe. I was talking to my dad the other day and he told me that it’s surreal what I have to be concerned about as a parent because he never had to worry about me and my sister getting gunned down at school or being in mortal danger from bad drugs.
  8. Not the bees!
  9. That’s what Briles and Baylor thought. Texas doesn’t have to go full on “win at all costs” to be nationally relevant and successful in football. Also, turning a program around and making it to the championship game in a single year is definitely the exception, not the rule.
  10. Incredible final. So happy for Messi to be a a World Cup champion.
  11. Hopefully Ewers will take dead aim and do what he can do.
  12. Wow, a try from beyond the 6 yard box. What a novel idea.
  13. This is several weeks old, but didn’t see it posted. Nothing surprising, but pretty funny to hear from the perspective of a member of Congress.
  14. I’ve been curious what the reaction would be when Ewers had the inevitable stinker of a game. This special thread is about what I expected.
  15. So it turns out last week wasn’t a culture win at all, just another lucky escape. Texas was close to blowing this game open and demoralizing the Pokes, but they still haven’t find that gear or killer instinct against teams with any fight. They haven’t lost me, but that was brutal to experience. A true agonizing slow motion catastrophe.
  16. Rojo looks like he’s trying to score 20 points every time he touches the ball. What an absolute beast of a football player and example of tenacity personified.
  17. Remember when Appalachian State upset Aggy? They’re getting their ass handed to them by the Texas State Bobcats. This would be funnier if Bama wasn’t try to fumble their way into gifting Aggy a win in Tuscaloosa.

    49-0

Mudholing the Sooners was satisfying as hell, but they’re a dogshit football team. Texas is clearly a different team with Ewers at the helm, but we’ll find out soon how good they are.
  19. Are they trying to not get to 50?
  20. This looks like brakes.
