  1. +1. This place is a piece of Americana, and not so big that you can't see it all in one day.
  2. Sarcastic replies aside, I will say this. The serendipity that can happen when you're driving through America and not on an insane schedule can be quite amazing. Every single city, small, medium, or large, has something cool in or near it. Every single one. If you're open to finding them, or letting them find you, you're gonna have a blast. Stop for lunch at a small town diner, and ask the waitress or hostess 'what's cool about this city?' (or something like that). Go to the main library and ask the same. Use the tried and true "fun things to do in XYZ" google search. One quick story. The family was on a roadtrip in the northeast last year. We had a day to kill driving between DC and NYC (eventually headed to Cape Cod). I did the google search thing, and found out that one of the Forts in Baltimore is a National Park. Now, National Parks are common, and Forts are common, but the overlapping of the two isn't necessarily common. So we set a course for Fort McHenry to kill the day. As my wife drove, I read more, and starting seeing a BUNCH of references to the Star Spangled Banner. When we got there we discovered that Fort McHenry is THAT Fort. Rockets red glare, bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night, that our flag was still there? Yeah, the flag flew over THAT Fort. Maybe some of y'all knew that already, but we didn't. And it turned into one of the absolute highlights of all of our travels. Quick edit to add - my US History learnings did not sufficiently educate me on how fucking close we were to losing our country during the War of 1812. Had the British succeeded at Baltimore / Fort McHenry, consensus (at least from the exhibits at the museum) was that they'd sail up the river to DC, which had just been attacked itself (or was just about to be), and likely take back the seat of our fledgling country. Just be open, man. This country has awesome shit all over the place.
  3. Don't be a cranky old man. There's plenty of excellent food in both cities. Both cities also have nice hotels, and fun things to do in the evening. No one is saying that you should adjust your travel times so you can explore Cincy. But if your delicate "I only wanna drive 6-8 hours a day" ass ends up in Cincinnati, then the HB is fun.
  4. OG US Hofbrau Haus in Cincinnati, it's a good time. Plenty to do in Louisville + Nashville. Fill up with gas in Memphis, so you don't have to stop in Arkansas. The drive from Texarkana to Austin isn't terrible; that's where we stayed on the outbound and return journey on a road trip last year.
  5. highly, highly, HIGHLY recommend Arrowhead. Big rocks, big views, cool history.
  6. Damn it feels good to have a bunch of longhorns in the pros again.
  7. After a few more videos, two things I wasn't giving enough weight to were 1) the sway option, which if successful gives a FOURTH positive pitch, but only for your school (works best if you have two existing positive pitches to use when selecting your three) and 2) look for 3- and 4-star GEM ATH's (it seems they tend to convert to other positions with jumps in attributes in year 1, and develop faster in subsequent seasons). YMMV but wanted to pass those along.
  8. The VAST majority of them are really just covering the basics. To @Helobious's point, there's quite a bit going on with the recruiting mechanics, and it takes a bit to 'make it all make sense.' I haven't really found anyone that has truly insider tips/tricks. This would be fun to see, if you've got a link?
  9. Anyone found repeatable ways to optimize recruiting? I used to love stacking rosters with pages of 5*s in NCAA2004. Having done one full season in dynasty, and doing some reading on reddit and such, recruiting in '24 seems to be * somewhat * balanced? I've got all the basics down - 35 prospects, max out your hours, target the pitches with the green check-boxes by them, look for 4- and 5-stars without offers in week3 or so, and you can get a jump on them ranking you high if you offer them when no-one else has, how to uncover "gems" in 3* and 4* recruits, etc. Just curious if anyone has ideas on min-maxing that thing.
  10. I never get tired of watching this.
  11. Also, the previews have me sort of excited for movies in the fall. Alien:Romulus, The Wild Robot, Gladiator 2, Joker: Folie au Deux, and Venom: The Last Dance are all ones I want to see. The MCU slowly dying off might be a good thing for the wider movie industry. Edit: And Red One (being dead serious).
  12. The movie is fun as fuck. Turn off your brain and go enjoy it.
  13. AVERAGING 31 wins a season is bananas. I expected Sparty, Baylor, UCONN to be higher. Surprised at Oregon, BYU, and Purdue that high. And lastly ... jesus christ, fuck Shaka. What a wasted decade.
  14. 10/$32m is some serious "we are the Joneses" shit (if true).
  15. In a sea full of sales idiots getting drunk at conferences stories (I am one of those), this is a DELIGHT to read. A+, 5/5, no notes, hope to duplicate some day.
  16. I've honestly never understood the mindset evidenced by this post. He was the backup here, and was hurt for long stretches, both of which combine to make it obvious that he's still going to be very raw. But he wasn't our starter, so he wasn't forced down our throats. And when he did get thrust into the fire, he played his tail off and we won, with obvious things that would be a problem were he a long-term starter, which were discussed here ad nauseum. But guess what? once Quinn was healthy, then Maalik didn't play anymore. So in some regards, the coaches agreed with you. And then, he got passed up by Arch on the depth chart. So again, the coaches agreed with you. Now he's getting his shot at Duke. And if he sucks, you know what will happen? He won't play. Kid hasn't been handed a single thing as a D1 football player, and by all accounts is an exceptional teammate and an exceptional human. I don't understand what makes you post something like "I thought he was awful." To be clear, I'm asking why you would POST that; I don't begrudge you THINKING it. Maybe he is awful, but what does your post add to this conversation, at this point? If he were our starter, and we were discussing his deficiencies and how they're holding us back, then your post is spot-on. Lord knows this place can do QB controversy with the best in the world. But that's not this thread. This thread is wishing a solid kid good luck, who has arguably been placed perfectly on the depth chart his entire time here. So why throw rocks? It's just not additive in any way, and it feels like you just want something to be mad about. Maybe start with our interior DL, instead of the kid that kept our name in the national championship conversation last year?
  17. Completed August of 2019. We're definitely in the danger zone. We don't have any of the obvious, horrendous cracking / separating lke in the pictures I've seen; really, we have almost no cracking whatsoever, neither inside the pool nor outside on the the superstructure. I do have SOME calcification buildup in a few spots, but I also have shit water. So I'm hopeful that I dodged it somehow. The Premier Pools main office has been helpful in the past getting someone to come out and work with me on a few things (not covered under warranty, of course), so I'm gonna reach out to them for advice. Fingers crossed.
  18. A good chuckle this morning, and a new twitter follow. You KNOW Tyrone's mom is a fuckin' menace! I would be, too!
  19. Turns out, winning gets a LOT easier when you have Tim Hudson ($850k), Mark Mulder ($800k), and Barry Zito ($500k) under contract for <$1m each, the latter two still on their rookie deals. Fucking Chad Bradford and Scott Hatteberg weren't the reasons that team went to the playoffs.

  21. Can everyone please put on the lens of "both teams are really fucking good, and any point made about a relative strength or weakness is in that context, and is not calling said strength or weakness a failing"? The last ~15 pages of this thread are an absolute beat down of a circular navel-gaze, on BOTH sides. Texas is going to win, of course, but it's not like we're equating Washington with Baylor for gods sake (and they're not calling us Arizona)
  22. I played for Dodd for two seasons right before high school. Funniest dude I've ever spent time around, and was really the first time I started to realize that while I was a good baseball player, I did NOT have a future in the sport because those dudes are just different. We were chatting one day about a bunch of nothing while warming up. I asked Dodd "hey, what was your major when you were at UT?" He doesn't miss a beat and replied "pussy." He stayed in touch with several of the guys from that team well after we all quit playing. Truly a nice guy. God rest his soul.
