  1. Episode just dropped...
  2. Similar story - was running through CDG to catch a connecting flight back to the US the day before Christmas and all the luggage carts were gone so I had to drag all my crap between terminals. Customs guys did their security stop close to the gate and asked "why are you sweating???" (said with a shitty French/Inspector Clouseau accent...)
  3. There is/was a football manager simulation game where you can "play" multiple seasons where you as manager/owner make the decisions on how/where to spend your money over the course of a season. You needed to make decisions after every simulated match based on player injuries, stadium condition, attendance numbers, etc.
  4. Interesting since the training (input) data for ChatGPT is from September 2021 (and earlier)... (unless they've changed the data since a few weeks ago...)
  5. I want a GIF of the jinx(s) comment by Rebecca to use in the football, recruiting and basketball boards...
  6. Link to a LHN stream?
  7. I've never been all that impressed with Mercado San Miguel when it comes to food (I was there again a few weeks ago) but my favorite in the world is the one in Barcelona (and the floating market in Bangkok) so that's my baseline. That being said, its a good place for a larger group to go and have drinks and some snacks as everyone can chose what they want to eat and meet up at a table. I recommend dinner at Bodega de los Secrets which isn't too far from Playa Major. Make sure to ask for a tour as it's in the basement of the old Madrid city wall and booze used to get smuggled by the monks (if I recall correctly) into the city via these tunnels...
  8. I didn't look at the credits but is Rupert (Anthony Head) the same actor? He looked/sounded different... (Never mind Google said he's back this season)
  9. I've had to get some documents done recently - the mail service was taking 1-2 months to get it done. I ended up paying a service I found online to get it done in 24 hours (plus overnight mail time). I don't remember the cost but I was thinking it was cheaper than the cost of a daytrip to Austin...
  10. I'm pumped - we just booked flights to BCN and are renting a villa south of Barcelona this July - not sure where yet but my buddy's brother and parents have houses near Tarragona and we'll be renting something in that area. Buddy also has an apartment in the Gothic Quarter so we have options of staying in BCN or at the rented villa. (We've been to BCN a bunch of times when we lived in Europe so we've already done the "must see" places in BCN but the Mercado off La Ramblia will definitely be a stop.) A great way to see the city is to rent an e-bike - ride along the beach to the Olympic village, ride up the steep hill to Castell de Montjuec and then down to Park Guell as a good 1/2 day trip... And of course, La Sagrada Familia...
  11. Ukrainian neighbor story - about 2 years ago a Ukrainian couple bought a house down the street. I know because I briefly chatted with them (in Russian) as I was walking the dog one evening. I found it curious that these were recent "immigrants" and were able to afford a house in our neighborhood as well as the 2 AMG Mercedes in the driveway but whatever... They started a total gut and renovation of their house about 18 months ago (pre-war) and the renovation was completed a few months ago. What's "strange" is they haven't ever moved back in spite the house being completed. I'm now suspecting that they may have been part of the "old"/corrupt Ukrainian regime and that their $ might have stopped flowing since the war began... (Lawn service stopped about the time the work finished) (I don't really care - what my neighbors do other than pick up your dogs crap on my lawn... We've got a few people in the neighborhood that have Ukrainian/Polish/Baltic flags that have been up since the start of the war and I would have expected these guys to have a Ukrainian flag up as well showing support...)
  12. I still want a movie or a series made for this (maybe updated to replace mafia with other "bad guys"...)
  13. Not my dog in the fight but another wiki says this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinderella_Castle Cinderella Castle was inspired by a variety of real and fictional palaces. These included Château d'Ussé, Fontainebleau, Versailles and the châteaux of Chenonceau, Pierrefonds, Chambord, Chaumont, Alcázar of Segovia, Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria and Craigievar Castle in Scotland.[2] Other sources of inspiration include the spire of Notre-Dame de Paris, the Moszna Castle in Poland, built in the 18th century, and the Tyn Church in Prague, Czech Republic, built in the 14th century. The chief designer of the castle, Herbert Ryman, also referenced the original design for the castle in the film franchise Cinderella and his own well-known creation — the Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland in California[ 2 different castles in Disney: Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella castle
  14. That's an open argument depending on what website you visit... Both Alcazar and Neuschwanstein are claimed to have inspired the Disneyland/Sleeping Beauty/Cinderella castle: https://www.travelandleisure.com/culture-design/architecture-design/walt-disney-castle-alcazar-de-segovia https://mappingspain.com/the-alcazar-of-segovia-one-of-spains-most-beautiful-castles/ I've seen both and I could see where either/both would have been the inspiration... (I sat between a German and Spaniard last week who were arguing this...)
  15. I've done Toledo and it's a neat little town but my Madrid crew said Segovia is a better day-trip. Aquaducts and one of the castles that inspired the Disney Castle.
  16. Reopening this thread - my twins are looking at applying to schools in the EU that offer english-only programs. Does anyone know how the application requirements are different for applying to these schools compared to US schools? They are in Texas pubic schools so aren't doing the IB programs. Do these schools use ACT/SAT scores and class rankings or do they mean jack-squat over there? (My kids also have EU citizenship so they can attend at EU rates rather than "foreign" citizen rates). Anyone know a college planner service that also deals with EU schools in addition to US ones? (Several I have talked to only deal with US schools...)
  17. No mas… (boiled eggs, potatoes, onions, peppers and tuna). Had pulpo, olive plate, jamon plates earlier…
  18. First post-Covid trip back to Madrid for work. Several of my favorite hole in the wall places didn't survive but this one did... Getting 2 plates per beer so may skip actual dinner... (fried eggs, fries, melted cheese and jamon)
  19. And for the record, I got my Masters (Geo) from Tech but hated living there after 5 years in Austin and got it done in 3 semesters just to get out of there...
  20. Going through this with my kids - you need to see what credits in geo engineering would be able to be transferred if he decided to switch to a ME major... I looked at getting out of geology my 2nd year when oil as at $10/bbl and realistically, most of my credits would only count in the School of Natural Sciences... I actually took one day of Home economics - which is in the Nat. Sciences department - and went back to geology on day 2... I would suspect that several of the classes he takes for geology won't count towards a ME degree if he decides to make the switch. So more base courses for him and more $$ for you... (In my day, I think I (my dad) paid 500/ for 15 hours so it was no big deal...) Chem and Biology 101 may transfer but probably not "rocks for jocks"...
  21. How many actual openings are there in those roller coaster companies... I mean how many new ones are actually built every year? 😀 I've always joked that my perfect job - after expat wife - would be a women's bike seat designer at a lesbian nudist colony but I've never seen that job posted... Or maybe that I hoped to become a bicycle seat there in my next life...
  22. Yup, I’m riding that train…. Of the 45 of us in my graduating class in the early 90’s, only 3 of us went on to get MA Geology degrees and only 2 of us still employed in E&P… (for now…)
  23. @tx 3 putt You write like my aggy brother-in-law… it’s “UT”, not ut…. 😂
  24. Congrats to your kid! That being said, O&G jobs are where the real money is made in the field but he’ll need to get a Masters if he wants to get hired by the big operators. If he wants to go the geo engineering route, he’ll probably be required to become a professional geologist and pass the test once out of school. (It’s a bitch and I’m glad I was grandfathered and don’t need to take the test) im a second generation geologist and I told my kid to get a different degree when he asked if he should go into geology especially with the whole green energy/ESG movement as well as the roller coaster career ride you should expect in O&G… (better to be a Petroleum engineer these days- no Masters required and slightly more stable as the wells always need to be worked on…) on the flip side, I chatted with one of my old UT geo professors who just retired and he said that only a small percentage of geology grads actually get O&G jobs but do have successful careers in other industries as what you learn in the program gives you a very good skill set in critical thinking that make you successful and those aren’t things you learn in other programs (in general). PM me if you want to discuss offline…
  25. Fyi you can get tenderloins at Asian markets for $20-25 bucks... Who cares if its choice when you are stir-frying it... Its still tender as F... I pick up several whenever I go into town and load the freezer...
