  1. To register a golf cart as a LSV in Texas, you need to have the following on the cart: a normal maximum speed of 20-25 mph (LSV) or 20-35 mph (NEV) seat belts head and tail lights a windshield a parking brake turn signals rear-view mirrors brake lights reflectors a valid 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). State law allows for use of golf carts with a slow-moving vehicle emblem in the following situations: in master planned communities with a uniform set of restrictive covenants in place, on public or private beaches, during the daytime and no more than two miles from where the owner usually parks the golf cart and for transportation to or from a golf course, or to cross intersections, including a road or street that has a posted speed limit of no more than 35 miles per hour. I've been pulled over 2x in my neighborhood where the sheriff wasn't aware of these laws even though my house is on a golf course and in a master planned community with restrictive covenants in place (The Woodlands). Didn't get a ticket but was told to get off the streets... If I'm not mistaken, New Braunfels now allows golf cars on the streets in the city.
  2. That was '85 - I remember seeing her...
  3. It's seasonal (i.e. not in stores now) and even on their website, next to nothing...
  4. Aargh, it was the 13th, not the 18th as I read it wrong and left $300 in my shopping cart...
  5. Unfortunately, Academy doesn't carry skis, wakeboards or wakesurf boards (at least not that I've found...)
  6. Just an FYI that Dick's has most of their towable water sports equipment at 50% until the 18th...
  7. Yup, standard issue Class II orange vests to make boats legal. Didn't look/ask about tow ropes... You also have to take the Texas boater safety course and do a 3 hour check ride before they turn you loose...
  8. Nope, just the boat...
  9. Bit the bullet and joined the Freedom Boat club on Conroe. Was pretty impressed with the boats they had at the dock (all in great shape) and only 2 boats were out when we stopped by this afternoon... Wake/surfwake, fishing and pontoon boats... living 30 minutes door to door sealed the deal... now need to buy some tubes and wakesurf boards...
  10. The deal I have now at Freedom is 3k initial payment to join and 300/month for year round access. I've been on their mailing list for 3 years now so I've seen all their deals and could probably hold out for the same deal in December for 2K membership but I'm ready to go now... It also allows me to get a boat at any other "affiliate" 4 times a year (per location). The real issue for me is availibity... I don't really want to be on the lakes on the crowded weekends where the idiots take over so a Friday off or a mid- week reservation works for me... Having had several boats (sail and motor) in the past, the price is attractive once I factor in what I used to pay for storage, maintainace and insurance alone... Unlike a time share, a 60 day notice before the annual renuwal gets me out of the deal...
  11. I saw one post earlier about Freedom boat club. Looking at joining in Conroe and was wondering if anyone had any experience with boat availibity and maintenance specifically at that location... Also interested in the availibity of getting boats in Clear Lake and Austin as part of the Conroe membership... Google search for reviews has been mostly positive...
  12. Hoity Toit is our happy hour place - usually gone before sundown while we can still legally drive...
  13. Not German and can't spell...
  14. Both already on the "usual" list as well as Pat's Place and the Hoity Toit for beverages and pool... Pour House isn't bad either and the Faust Hotel refills growlers...
  15. Headed to a "boys weekend" to a house on the Comal tomorrow. Understand there is now a ban on beer cans on the river but on the plus side, the thong ban was lifted so hard liquor and thongs should make a good combo... any good places to eat that are new in the past year in town? Krause's opened the beer hall last year which was pretty good...
  16. My 12 year old boys liked the cenotes better than the reef. Colder water but who cares when it's in the 90's...
  17. I think they can't use bulldozers, etc because of turtles laying eggs on the beach...
  18. Half Moon had a ton of it a few weeks ago but we stayed at the northern edge of the bay and the wind/waves pushed most of it to the center of the bay...
  19. No clue on the source... Stumbled across it a few years ago and thought it was perfect for the old Shag site...
  20. The Danes didn't consider a processed "cheese" a real food product especially when it doesn't need to be refrigerated... and I can attest that after about 4 years, it does go old...
  21. Lived in Copenhagen for a few years and we had people bring us Velveta and flour tortillas from home...
  22. Nash's on Hildago but get a table near a fan as it was hotter than hell in there...
  23. Enjoy Isla! After fighting the rain to get to the airport yesterday, we returned to Houston. The wife and kids liked Isla better than Akumal - mainly because "there was stuff to do"... Nevermind the sweltering afternoon heat and not leaving the a/c condo in the afternoon... While the condo we had on Half-Moon bay in Akumal was on the water and all you had to do was to step out the door to snorkel, the rest of the family (wife and 12 year old twins) liked Isla last better because of the vibe... I had originally booked 9 nights at Isla but then cut it down to 5 as I thought the kids would be bored, in the end, we could have spent the whole time at Isla and everyone would have been ok... that being said, whenever we go back, it will be at/near North Beach and within walking distance of Hildago street mainly for the reasons above. If you are in the middle or southern part of the island, you need to take a taxi or get a cart to go anywhere and might as well be somewhere else rather than Isla... North beach was more of the vibe that we had in Hui Hin, Phuket, Penang, or Hoi An (minus the hookers)... Will definitely go back! We really liked Hotel Secreto and Ixchel and would probably stay at one of those next time... ( Nautibeach condos were fine and the Mayan beach club for dinner was probably had the best food we ate besides Bastos but the community Wifi sucked there...)
  24. Totally different scene than Isla... Wife liked the "shopping", walking to bars and resturants and people bringing her drinks on the beach on Isla while in Akumel, we had a condo 40' from the water and snorkeling out the door but it was more of a "do it your self" sort of place (like a beach or lake house). You had to drive to resturants/bars down here which kinda sucked for me as I waited to imbibe beverages when we got home... if you were single and looking for chicks, Isla is your place, not Akumal...
  25. WTF with the speed limits on 307? Left Isla for a week in Akumal and made the drive down. Damn speed limit signs jump from 100 to 80 to 60 and back every kilometer. Not wanting to get pulled over as the car has rental stickers on it, I'm following the speed limits as all the other cars go flying by me... What a racket... SMH... oh - tropical wave hitting down here. Had 9 days of sun but looks like next few will be wet...
