  1. Great strategy- assuming you can last for a long time somewhere - if you get bought out but the downside is that when prices drop (again) and the company looks to cut costs. Being expensive puts a target on your back by people like HR who have no clue what you actually do for the company but they do the math that they can cut you and keep more cheaper/younger people with you gone... Especially when you realize that you aren't one of those "cheap" guys anymore but rather one of the expensive "grey haired" ones...
  2. PC games? Youtube and ticktock mostly like most kids unfortunately besides what they've played on Xbox for past 10 years. But with one Xbox supposedly having issues and most recent releases sucking, I'm thinking I can get one of the Xbox PC passes to allow them to keep playing what they were before on it rather than Xbox versions... (I know PC versions of games are better than what Xbox has now but my point of reference is the last PC-based game I played too damn long ago - CounterStrike on Stream.) Everything since then has been on Xbox so I have nothing to compare against( and they aren't getting a 70" 12K screen in their dorm... Want something better kid? Get a job and build your own box like we used to do...
  3. Bumping this thread as it's been dead for awhile. I haven't built a PC since I did a HTPC 10+ years ago and now all the firesticks/smart TV's do what I used the PC for back then when not using my Ipad or work laptop... Kids headed off to college and have asked for gaming PC's to take with them and to use for school. (I've gotten them decent used laptops for high school that work fine with Office apps but one had an Xbox die and was asking to go the gaming PC route and their school network won't allow anything but Roku on their network.) Picked up one of these off Amazon and wiped and re-installed a fresh version of W11 (used Rufus). Got a few weeks until I can return to Amazon but it seemed a pretty good deal with plans to install Stremio with a Real Debride account as well as Kodi (with a VPN, of course). Seems most kids would rather have their nose buried on their phones than gaming so I figured this was a good option for school apps, streaming and occasional gaming. Thoughts? Can upgrade HD to a 2.5 SSD to get to 2TB. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C9J69KH8?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1
  4. Add a 100# scared dog jumping on your bed...
  5. I had a nightmare about pegging last night…
  6. Typo-3.5 (not 3.7) weighted GPA and their school has the district STEM program which didn’t help my “scholar” twin who would have made top 5% if he would have transferred to a neighboring high school. (One B in 4 years but hurt ranking by only taking 2AP classes the first 2 years…)
  7. It should but the key is to get in good with the professors that teach the courses the last 2 years (or on the 660 field trip). In general, they would rather have a grad student they know vs someone coming in from outside... (The 660 field trip for 6 weeks was probably the best time I had in the department and I've made lifetime friends from it... Only 3 of us that went on the field trip went on to get geology masters and only 2 of us are still employed in the E&P industry... On the flip side, a recently retired prof told me that the majority of kids with a BS move to other fields post graduation but have been very successful because employers appreciate critical and analytical thinking skills you learn as an undergraduate...)
  8. We figured both would go their separate ways for school but in the end, decided to not only go to school together but to room together. We’ll see how that works as one is the “party-er” and a slob while the other is the bookworm and neat freak… But both said that they would rather deal with the devil they know than get some “random” person in their room and hopefully will keep each other in line…
  9. Hopefully your son is going to get his MS if he’s gonna stay with geology and wants to go O&G… (been there, still living it…)
  10. Fellow Pig-bound dad as well… My twins are also headed there in the fall for supply chain. One of them (top 11% and 30 AP hours) turned down a full ride at Tulsa and partial at others because of the Walton school ranking and the other boy decided TT was a smellier version of College Station and decided to follow his brother and room together than going to Tech. (Full disclosure, I got my MS Geology there but hated every minute after a BS in Austin). If it wasn’t for the SC ranking at Ark, both would have gone elsewhere. With the near in-state tuition they offer for top Texas students, the cost if you pay for everything is about the same as UT or TT in-state (but I hear next year going forward is going to be much more restrictive on getting this in-state discount.) My “scholar” didn’t even bother to apply to UT as he was told that if he wanted McCombs, he needed to be top 3 or 4% in his high school (big 6A school with a district STEM program) when we did our Austin campus visit. Had no desire to go the CAP route and risk a LA degree… He does hope to possibly get into UT for a Masters but Ark has a program where you can get you MS in 5 years and with AP credits, a MS in 4… Old enough to remember the SWC rivalry but really liked the campus and “old town” next to it. Gonna enjoy the visits other than the trip from Houston… (House rental and tickets already in hand for the UT game there in November and I will be wearing burnt orange) (Not sure a&m is getting more selective as my non-scholar - barely top half of his class - did get accepted to a&m but he only applied there because my wife’s side of the family is Maroon 3 generations back and only applied “for grandpa”…) I suspect he got accepted to Ark after being initially “wait-listed” there because they really wanted his brother but with a 3.7 gpa also gets the tuition discount…)
  11. My 13000w propane (Tri-fuel) will power my 4K sqft house so long we don’t use the dryer, microwave or stove when it’s on. I’ve got soft start capacitors on both my 5 and 3 ton a/c’s but still need to set both to 60deg when the gen is running to keep them from cycling on and off (or just use the upstairs one) to keep the load down. I get about 6 hours per propane tank (have 5) so can run awhile before I need to add gasoline or connect to the gas line in the laundry room to power it indefinitely. I think the whole setup cost me 2-2.5k including gen, cable and electrician. Beats the 15k quote in got for a Generac (as my gas main is on the opposite side of the house from the breaker panel…) only pain is it isn’t “instant on” as I have to turn on the propane and flip the switch on the breaker box but that takes less than a minute…. I’ve also added a few UPS’s to my mesh wifi so that never goes down and can run some stuff interrupted until I fire up the gen. Luckily my gen sits in a covered pool house so I don’t need to wheel it out of storage and all I have to do is turn on the gas and fire it up…
  12. I did - electrician put in the lock-out switch on the breaker box and then connected the external socket where I p-lug in the 240V cable from the generator. And the lockout switch is what keeps the power from back-feeding up the external wiring to the pole and is required by law.
  13. Here's an old post I put up after the freeze about connecting a portable generator to your fuse box to power the house. I can use propane, gasoline or connect to the natural gas line by the dryer if needed. (post 394)
  14. All buried in The Woodlands except for the main transmission towers…
  15. "His first hole as a father is a memorable one..." - I'm guessing wife didn't have a C-section?
  16. Wonder how this will work when you want to buy on a certain card for miles... https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13424355/Visa-major-changes-Americans-carry-fewer-cards.html

  20. Yea, I told mine that if they want to go to UT, get good grades and shoot for grad school...
  21. Sorry to derail this thread so this will be my last post here and any further ones will be on the Surly kids who didn’t go to UT one… Yea, never had been to Fayettenam until last year but the old town by campus is great and reminded me of Austin the the 80’s when I attended UT and will probably buy a house there for the kid to live in next year. @irishtexan - yea, kid does manual labor as a job now and benches 300# at18 (no ‘roids) But won’t need to swing a shovel as he can use his trust fund to hire someone to dig a ditch for him if needed…
  22. That was the exact expression I had when my kid asked a few years ago if he should follow my career (and his grandfathers) as a E&P geologist… 😂
  23. Graduating top 10% but wants to do supply chain and the Walton School ranked pretty good and they are giving him money. Didn’t want to go CAP route and then risk not get into McC business school… Can get a Masters there in 5 years (actually closer to 4 with all the AP credits he has going in…) A third of the undergrads there are from Texas…
  24. Ha - My kid is going to pig in the fall and I told him I'm putting a hog sticker on his car because of Texas tags...
  25. You know, that's at Ol'Miss, right? I'm sure he'll have a job lined up from daddy or one of his buddies dads who thinks what he did was great...
