  1. Real happy to see cluster munitions coming. I just have not understood the hesitancy at all. We aren’t party to the international agreement not to use them. And the whole argument by humanitarian groups that they are dangerous to civilians rings entirely hollow to me in this situation. Using them while invading another country is one thing, as you’re creating a dangerous situation in somebody else’s future territory (like when we used them in the Middle East or when Russia uses them in Ukraine). But it’s an entirely different thing imo when it’s Ukraine using them on its own territory. They aren’t going to be using them near their own civilians. They are using them to kick the enemy out, and it will be their own responsibility to clean up afterwards. It should not be anybody else’s business what they choose to do to their own territory when it has zero impact on anyone else’s (as opposed to them using something like a nuke on their own territory that COULD affect someone beyond their borders). It’s a localized weapon that is perfectly suited to their situation. If they want them, I frankly find it disgusting that we haven’t provided them sooner. Especially since Russia is already using them all over Ukraine, and I guarantee those Russian munitions have a much higher failure rate than ours. So the biggest argument against providing them is moot. But as with everything else in this war, better late than never!
  2. The only thing people find hard to grasp is your apparent assumption that a) there’s a nearly unprecedented, ongoing criminal investigation of a former president, and b) you think it’s remotely possible that there is no evidence that isn’t known by the public at large. You may be absolutely right that nothing comes from this particular matter. But I don’t think any reasonable person could conclude that it went nowhere because all the relevant evidence was publicly known (and fell short of sufficient to convict).
  3. Not that I disagree with the rest of your post, I just extra-agree with this one. I’ve had my family threatened multiple times. It doesn’t change anything when you know it’s just bluster. In reality, it can be pretty darn useful, especially in discretionary matters left to the judge.
  4. How? Right now, everyone is making Hunter jokes. Two years ago, everyone would be making Jr jokes. I don’t imagine there would be much difference other than the name inserted. Maybe one additional difference that we can assume a coked up Hunter still has a much bigger dick than a sober Junior.
  5. Good question. I bet we wouldn’t use them that way, but I won’t be surprised at all to see UK try it. Probably depends on how big those bomblets are since the problem with them is that allegedly a lot don’t detonate on impact. So you’d be blowing a lot of mines while also planting new (presumably less deadly) ones. But that might not even be worth it. If you blast the shit out of all the defensive lines covering a mine-field, then you can bring in the stuff designed for clearing those fields without worrying about heavy counter fire.

  13. It depends on what they mean by β€œclosest to.” One of them is only 3 minutes after midnight, so you could say it’s the β€œclosest” by that metric. But it’s also 23 hours and 57 minutes from midnight in a linear sense, so it’s also the farthest.

  16. This is why it would've been nice to have actual facts in the case. If the design of a website for a gay couple included the requirement to write pro-gay messages or something, then you may have a point (that may be forcing someone to make an expression they didn't agree with). If the website is just a template and the only thing differentiating it from every other website is the names/pictures of the couple, then there's no expression. You're arguing one side of a hypothetical without acknowledging that there are other hypotheticals that may be impacted by this ruling.
  17. I wish this had been done long ago as the number of circuits increased. But at this point, it probably doesn't change the outcome. If you wanted a new judge, you'd just create new circuits. Maybe if it was setup to add one new judge every 4 years until you get to 13, then you could possibly avoid the gamesmanship and inevitable counter-court packing. Term limits and an actual ethics system are a good, non-partisan solution right now. How you would stagger those terms is a difficult question though, and the only way I think you could get such a law passed would be to say that everybody currently on the court maintains their life-appointment, but all new appointments are subject to term limits. That doesn't help in the short-term, but it's a step in the right direction.
  18. Only because that case hasn't made it to the USSC yet.
  19. Thinking long term doesn't make me feel any better. Unless something extreme occurs, the next GOP president will likely still have this court. And any "but I want it now" justifications for allowing that president to make laws will be upheld 6-3 by the USSC.
  20. Only if they get lucky. Those are relatively small, unguided rockets. And without a computer targeting system that would be found in a helo, accuracy is pretty much non-existent. Not like firing a grenade launcher where you can make a pretty good guess as to it's trajectory, these are really for shooting targets maybe a mile or two away. Good luck eyeballing that.
