  1. You just stay out of it. JD Vance is just fine right where he is!
  2. I don’t think that. First, I don’t think the Muslim population in Michigan is a monolith acting with one mind. And I think they’re probably astute enough to judge the ticket by its platform, and to judge Shapiro by his record and not his rhetoric. They might have also taken into consideration the fact that he had the endorsement of Arab and Muslim communities in Pennsylvania and not simply reacted to a negative campaign against him on social media. https://www.inquirer.com/opinion/commentary/shapiro-arab-muslim-communities-pennsylvania-20240731.html Either Walz or Shapiro would be a fine pick. A bullet wouldn’t have been dodged with one man or the other.
  3. Or show us a wide shot of the city so we can see that the vandalism was confined to just one city block or so. It wasn’t like it was Fallujah (or Mariupol or Gaza City, take your pick). Yet Fox News ran closeups of a few buildings on fire in Minneapolis and Portland, they ran them on a loop 24/7 and raged, “America is burning!” I see two buildings with fire damage in that clip. The one with serious damage is, I assume, the police HQ. The other one might have just experienced secondary damage from the truck fire in front of it. It’s hard to tell. Whatever the total damage there amounted to, I’d say it was considerably less then the value of one human life. But those on the right will disagree because we’re talking about a black life and to them black lives don’t matter much.
  4. Somewhat reminiscent of this old ad. (Which unfortunately didn’t work out so well.)
  5. Kelly, who attended Netanyahu’s address to Congress and applauded when Bibi referred to pro-Palestinian protesters as “Iran’s useful idiots.” His Israel policy is no different from Shapiro’s but for some reason he doesn’t get called out in it. Can’t imagine why. But that position aside, I would’ve liked him as a VP candidate also. He’s not a great orator but he’d be good on the border issue, on gun control, and as an astronaut he’d be a representative for science. We could use more of that In government. He’s also got experience winning competitive elections.
  6. “For days there has been chatter on the progressive interwebs about how Josh Shapiro would “divide” the party. Extremely online politicos upset about his views on Israel or school vouchers or his Kosher Obama speaking style have asserted this dispositively. […] “If you are involved in these online meme wars, I grant that it might feel as if things are very contentious. You might see yourself as being on one side of a battle that must be won, and that your activism is the tip of the spear that represents a broader coalition behind you out in the world.” It seems like we have something akin to that going on here. I don’t know if he’ll be the pick but if he is then I hope all of the Chicken Littles around here who’ve been acting like it will be the end of the world if Shapiro gets the nod can get over it in a hurry. He was the front runner from the start and we shouldn’t be surprised if he’s the choice for Kamala’s running mate.
  7. When and where will those attacks come? How will they land when the right’s position on Israel is much more extreme than Shapiro’s? (And Shapiro’s isn’t particularly extreme compared to the other VP candidates.) Shapiro has been very critical of Netanyahu, calling him “one of the worst leaders of all time” and “a dangerous and destructive force.” He’s in favor of a two state solution. Trump is not and will let Netanyahu run rampant both in Gaza and the West Bank. So how will the right attack Shapiro on his Israel policy when the attacks from the left are that he’s too pro-Israel? Also, let’s remember that the Harris administration‘s policy in Israel will be set by Harris, not by her VP. Just like Kamala changed some of her positions when she joined the Biden administration in support of Biden’s policies, the same will happen with whomever her VP is. If Shapiro is the pick, his positions on Israel, school vouchers, gun control, etc. will be whatever Kamala determines they should be.
  8. It’s frustrating that people continue to believe that because it’s simply not true. Was the guy too young to remember where the economy was when Obama took office and how much better it was when he left? Despite Trump’s lies, the economy did better in Obama’s last three years than it did in Trump’s first three. Trump got a lot of mileage out of lying about the economy both before and after he took office. When he took office he immediately claimed credit for the strong economy he received from Obama. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-takes-credit-for-strong-january-jobs-numbers/ Did you bother pointing out to him that the Biden economy is really strong? https://thehill.com/business/4715951-world-bank-impressive-us-economy-is-powering-the-world/
  9. Not what you’re thinking, but that reminds me of one of my favorite short stories: Profession by Isaac Asimov
  10. The right has Elon Musk. The left has George Soros. Who’s antisemitic?
  11. I’d say go ahead and invite Trump to question whether he’s a good Jew or a bad Jew right alongside his questioning of whether Harris is black or Indian. Let the racist assuole be a racist asshole. What if Shapiro wasn’t Jewish? Would you feel better about him as Kamala’s running mate?
  12. She didn’t include a link in her tweet. I went to nytimes.com…this was the headline I saw: If I go to: https://www.nytimes.com/section/politics I see the same headline (with preview text): Here’s the link to the article: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/08/03/us/politics/trump-harris-debate-fox-news.html It begins: I don’t know who Amy Fried is but if her reporting on the headline was accurate then that wording apparently didn’t last long.
  13. Says the guy who thought the bipartisan border bill was a Biden bluff. You reaffirm my take on Shapiro.
  14. Oh that. Shapiro didn’t harass or molest or assault anyone. Cool. Happened after he took office so no election interference. Also cool. The guilty party resigned, a settlement was paid to the victim. Doesn’t sound like a huge stain on Shapiro, especially when the Republican nominee has been found personally liable for sexual assault; has been ordered to pay tens of millions of dollars to his victim for defaming her; continues to defame her and might get sued again; is a serial adulterer and misogynist; and paid hush money to a porn star during his campaign to cover up their affair. But Shapiro had an employee who sexually harassed someone and you’re not happy with the way it was handied. So same same, I guess. This is what we mean when we say Republicans can get away with all kinds of grotesque misconduct but Democrats have to be just exactly perfect about everything. It’s an impossible double standard. I don’t think it’s a big deal and I doubt whether it would get much attention during the campaign. Shapiro didn’t harass anyone. Trump’s been accused of rape. Advantage Shapiro.
  15. How much do you want to bet he’s never even registered to vote?
  16. He tells them he’s really smart and strong and successful and they believe him because they’re fucking morons who can’t tell the difference between reality and reality tv.
  17. “Nobody knew health care could be so complicated.”
  18. You can’t be serious. That’s like asking why he wouldn’t admit to having secret negotiations with Russia to build a Trump tower in Moscow during the 2016 campaign.
