I suppose if convenience matters more to you than audio quality. I’ve never felt the need to carry my entire music collection around with me and never had the time to rip a couple thousand CDs to lossy mp3s. Even if I did, I never would’ve tossed out my CD collection.
I’ve got a case that will hold about a couple dozen CDs and that’s more than enough for most of my needs. I can choose a good variety of selections for any trip. For longer trips I can put 40 or 100 discs in a Case Logic binder. I tried ripping an assortment of discs when I first got an iPhone but the listening experience was so frustrating, cupping my hands over the earbuds trying to get listenable sound, that I never listened for long and don’t have any music on my current phone. I listen to CDs on my home and car stereos, PC, and boom box. On my phone I listen to talk radio or podcasts. I’ve got decent speakers on my PC and can listen to streaming stuff that way but it’s not my first choice. The iPod was a solution to a problem I never had. I was amazed, though, by how quickly everyone discarded their CD collections.
