  1. Oh for fuck’s sake…I cannot even imagine the world of hurt dad woulda been in (retired USAF O6) had he done even 1/10th of that OPSEC leak. And I’m not even sure if he had TS anytime in his career, coming up flight nurse…will have to ask but it’s gotta be a court martial at least. SecDef will just drown his sorrows and tomorrow is another day. Fuck
  2. By the time they get to the dealership it’ll be like a Hot Shots carrier landing
  3. It kept me away from here for a few months…and I’m still not engaged as much as I was, particularly in CR as I was closely tracking threads for news. Had to stick my head in the sand because I knew it’d be bad
  4. I figured this was going to happen…you just knew they were going to goad and insult VZ so they can throw around red meat of ‘see, we can’t support this disrespectful guy and he’s obviously negotiating in bad faith…guess we are forced to go direct with Russia’. Just fuckin awful, and like those cheering the idea of shutting down these foreign aid programs…will have long term, far reaching consequences that damage US power projection
  5. Opening credits looked incredible in 4k, and feel like they did a pretty good job with ‘show, don’t tell’ for a season opener to establish quickly…pet peeve of mine is lazy writing via blatant cop outs like expository dialog or a character listening to KPLOT radio.
  6. Well yeah she (apparently) chose to have a kid with him, or chose to ignore the following educational video in grade school
  7. Ain’t that the truth. My take on being a good parent is balance and adaptive thinking. A kiddo raised to be a robotic math god is likely to freeze up solving problems outside their narrowly focused upbringing or have severe emotional issues…look at someone like Tiger. Too much free range, “let the kid find their own spirit guide, man” fails to prepare them for being a productive member of society. Of course, abandonment fuels 20-something’s with daddy issues and I’m sure half of the world approves of that. That being said, the focus on STEM in primary education is (and has been) awful for decades. Math is the language of the universe and we do a shit job preparing our kids in public education. Now…what organization is trying to shut down the Dept of Education, whitewash history and gut public education for private Christian academy vouchers?
  8. Well I’d been disappointed as fuck in my fellow mankind thinking about leaving my kids a planet with the possibility of irreversible climate change. Guess I’ll throw about 40% of my fellow Americans on the pile for the possibility of irreversible fuckatude to the fabric of our country as well.
  9. Yeah that absolutely jives with what that track plot showed a few pages back: hunch is the helo pilot was too high for Track 4, which notes 200’ ceiling north of the bridge. Believe it’s happened before as a close call…are they unknowingly pulling back on the cyclic as they glance up for traffic? Or maybe it really was due to a brown trans epileptic dwarf in the tower.
  10. “It’s times like this, oh where I feel a bit resigned…to just fuckin eject, rather than admit that I was blind” Not fully relevant, but hope you know some Dos Gringos…you drove Orions right?
  11. I get cleared for visual separation, but thought I saw an ADSB map showing the helicopter was climbing up from ~200ft to ~450ft as the CRJ was on short final and likely on glide slope. Assume that those helicopter tracks have a ceiling restriction there?
  12. Oh boy…if you’ve ever flown into Reagan on the River Visual approach, you know it’s pretty sporty. Due to proximity to restricted airspace, they essentially follow the Potomac as base leg until a sharp right turn final just past the bridges. If you ever fly into Reagan, take a left side window seat if the weather is supposed to be nice. I’ve nerded out on those bridges before, just watching arrivals for a bit on my way to mandatory Changing of the Guard at Arlington National. Often you’ll see Blackhawks or police helicopters at low level, crossing the river into the city, and have wondered what the separation rules are around Roosevelt Island…you’ve got crews who are probably laser focused on not busting the airspace, descending, about to turn final while low, slow, dark helicopters cross perpendicular below you. If that’s what happened here, awful but sorta surprised it hasn’t happened already. edit: didn’t see replies above while typing that up
  13. So a C-17 has got to cost like $20k-$30k an hour to operate, and would be an absolutely critical in-demand asset were a war in the Pacific to break out owing to its ability to deliver materiel to austere locations directly. They’ve even gamed ways to deploy one + a few F-35’s on a dirt strip, complete with fuel bladders and crew, for the inevitable destruction of Diego Garcia in a full shooting match…so let’s not log pointless hours on one? Logistics reach has long been a key differentiator of a superpower, assets like C-17s and tankers should be protected so they don’t end up like the B-1, where serving as a low-altitude bomb truck for 20 years in the sandbox effectively clapped out the bulk of the fleet. Heavy lift, long range, high speed and high altitude employment of stealthy cruise missiles sure sounds helpful in a war with China. And that’s 1% of why that was stupid. Probably just to get that one photo.
  14. Ok so sounds like my ability to buy tickets to a hot concert are going to get even shittier? My first thought was all the scalper asshats will run the $200 ChatGPT tier to broaden their ability to gobble up more tickets by obfuscating they’re essentially script kiddies. Fuck I miss the days of seeing Mumford at Stubb’s for $35, parking across RR in that weird little garage thing for $8, and not having to be on like 4 ‘presale’ lists just to buy a shitty $90 seat at Moody.
  15. At least in its current form (Transformer architecture at massive scale trained on stolen content), GenAI reminds me of Block Chain…a solution to a particular type of problem, requiring shit-loads of expensive compute to execute efficiently, and thus cost-recovery drives business to expand applications of it or follow the tech hype cycle to extremes. So like Block Chain, “AI” is being crammed into every possible corner when no one asked for it in use cases with no value-add. I’d like to think the smart way is to adopt the general language model, extend it with use case-specific training data, and leverage a process like RAG to give it access to SME-written policy/troubleshooting/etc documentation…make a legit useful knowledge base search, or virtual support agent that’s smarter than a basic logic tree, or digital Dr House that diagnoses Lupus. I doubt I’ll be happy to have Apple Intelligence’s version of Clippy when I’m burning whale oil for lighting and oxen power to commute because all the electricity/water is fully dedicated to data centers. No doubt better modeling architectures will drive towards legit intelligent systems…but current pace is going to bankrupt companies and waste limited resources standing up monster data centers to keep pace in an imaginary race.
  16. Don’t they have Truth Social? If I recall correctly, there were complaints it was too boring because there was no dissent there to satisfy the outrage cycle
  17. Tons of subreddits today are banning Twitter links. I approve.
  18. RR and Austin ISD normal start tomorrow. Off to check Facebook and see how the sane ones are taking it.
  19. Getting flashbacks to 2021…luckily no power outages or sounds of trees splitting in half from across the hood.
  20. Glad you got one of those snide bastards
  21. Apparently his character in the game Path of Exile 2 was logged in while they showed him on tv at the inauguration.
  22. RR closed as well. I’d welcome a day to just chill but these weather events never happen on a Friday evening, where it’d get us out of 8a Saturday basketball, but always after a weekend when kids have to be managed while on calls all day.
