  1. I still feel like that’s the ultimate play here for Elon, not making money for himself but providing a forum where he’s king emperor to let the wing nuts / foreign governments / QAnon assholes / etc have free reign under the auspices of freedom of speech. He never really wanted to buy it in the first place but now that he’s committed, gonna shape it into his fiefdom. Not sure what his investors will think of that and it’s already apparent big money advertisers are pressing pause.
  2. 9 starters out, including the 4yr QB. Not the whole story but I’ve never seen so many injuries and QB in now is a FR who threw two picks and fumbled the snap on 4th-1. We’ve never had the depth to absorb those kinda losses.
  3. I’ve been a Poke since 98 and thought I’d seen it all, but this season is going to set a record for epic collapses…Sanders has always been made of glass but we didn’t bother to break in the backups, injuries piled up across the board, and I’ll be surprised if we win another game.
  4. Somehow every kid extant today knows that’s a phone even though they’ve never seen a ‘real’ phone like that in their life.
  5. There’s a throwaway line in the MST3k classic ‘Time Chasers’, showing the ‘future’ as a dirty studio backlot and Crow quips ‘Ben and Jerry’s was the key to the Armageddon’ that just slays me…the absurdity of it as I imagine how that coulda played out. That Stephen fucking King’s pissy tweet may have legit influenced millions of revenue for a hugely influential company convinces me that humanity could very well destroy itself somehow via Ben and Jerry’s.
  6. I did a double take…thought he had ‘shopped in the ‘deal with it’ sunglasses, which would be epic
  7. Well I pointed out before that he’s now what he hates…a remote worker, for two of his companies.
  8. Clearly. But a lot of people who get to that level have a drive to succeed and associated ego that makes 99.999% of other people blush. Succeed at all other costs (hi Tom Brady). It’s the last step that worries me. We don’t need more avenues, especially a huge one that’s got global reach and install base, for people to sow division, hate and lies. Sure it may crash and burn under the weight of trolls, conspiracy purveyors, bent politicians and dick pill ads…but it could also maintain just enough veiled legitimacy to soldier on as a means to spread more lies that inspire crazies to Jan 6, Pelosi, Pizzagate, litter boxes in schools, CRT, etc. It wasn’t perfect, but moderation and earned bannings kept it somewhat reliable over the alternatives.
  9. So maybe the play here was continually doubling down as a monument to egotism? 1) Get pissy with Twitter CEO over both using it as his PR department (which Tesla famously doesn’t have) and spreading misinformation, including market manipulation…”rules don’t apply to me” 2) Haphazardly enter into a contract to buy, under terrible terms, the company to spite Twitter leadership…”I’ll show them who’s boss” 3) Spend months trying to throw the deal via any means possible…”it’s not my fault, I was mislead!” 4) When that failed, decide to fire half the company…”look what you made me do!” 5) Blame the ‘activists’ as established advertising revenue melts away, and leverage name recognition to turn it into THE powerhouse of disinformation-for-hire…”necessary to save Twitter from the leftist libtard boogeymen”.
  10. Well advertisers pulling their commitments certainly seems like free speech to me
  11. That seems awfully fast to execute a well-considered, thought out RIF. And good luck Elon, blaming ‘activist groups’ for a sudden drop in revenue. Pretty sure the big money types are not moving en masse due to pressure from anyone but fear of a precipitous drop in ROI. This has been fascinating to watch unfold.
  12. It’s not that he’s ‘trending right on a few things’. It’s that he is using his outsized voice to perpetuate and amplify right-leaning conspiracy theories that have proven, repeatedly, to bring real-world consequences to people…under the banner of ‘free speech’. When people show you who they are, believe them. And brisket is nothing at all like a fence sitter, he’s very clear on his view from the ledge.
  13. The fact that this is your takeaway, after all this discussion and Brisket’s post about narcissism says a lot more about you than it does about him. My take is that most of us aren’t really talking about Twitter itself, but its influence on people who have proven over and over again to be exceptionally gullible in reinforcing their worldview that some nameless, shapeless force is out to get them. Twitter is the largest, most accessible of avenues for short form statements that fits their mold perfectly…the lack of ‘room’ to provide nuance keys perfectly on their lack of knowledge/motivation to apply critical thinking. It doesn’t need to represent the bulk of Americans or be a real place…it just needs a wide enough breadth that it reaches people who will enact Jan 6, “where’s Nancy”, kidnap a governor, etc.
  14. Yeah out of curiosity I watched that same one, they’re buried in the v underneath the IM. Notably that video didn’t include draining/refilling the coolant, and had me nervous about dropping a fastener into the engine at one point. Dude has quite the array of wrenches to get into some tight spots…I’d spend 19 hours just going back/forth to the hardware store and doing the job twice after my first attempt resulted in leftover parts. For $1200 I’d make sure both knock sensors were replaced as the job is all labor.
  15. A quick google search shows something like 400k blue checks on Twitter. Times $20/month = $96M/year. That’s assuming every one starts forking over $20 a month. Out of…$5B annual revenue? I guess it’s a start. They’ll need to really open up the ‘active, notable and authentic’ criteria to grow that which means more Catturd2 and what nots.
  16. Oh look you’re blaming the media. That’s less surprising than Humble/whoeverdafuck getting dunked on by an Aggie.
  17. Walk into room, take steaming dump on carpet. Everyone gasps. ”You’re obviously triggered and should calm down”
  18. I’ll never understand what that ‘keep conservative voices from being silenced’ outcry is all about in the age of the internet. There are endless ways to get your ‘message out’. On top of that, there’s tons of sane conservative voices that don’t get banned…it’s both ‘n-word +500%’ troll crowd and ‘just asking questions but here’s a false conspiracy theory that’s dangerous to gullible people and leads them to physically attack people’ that tag along as a toxic mass. It’s a never ending victim complex that shovels hateful, angry drivel in spades.
  19. My idiot neighbor with the OneFamily billboard held in his truck bed by two loops of Hill Country floss has now spray painted ‘vote the woke out’ onto his sign. I keep checking the news to see if it’s flown off on 1431 yet
