  1. Spanish language media quietly doing a great job interviewing counselors who moved children to safety For the Peggy Hills of the world, YouTube closed captions has a half-decent (emphasis on half) automatic translation feature.
  2. Nothing is weird about young people making friends and staying in touch over the years. Some people, it would seem, have a hard time understanding how a summer camp would be a place where that sort of thing would happen.
  3. When they said "could've been worse" at the first presser, Ted being there is the "worse" we all had in mind.
  4. It's been tried and hasn't made a shit
  5. I'm not MAGA but the ethos of "traditional values" is that the man is the provider and the protector of the entire family, and the family members in greatest need of protection are his daughters. So they're gonna be pretty torn up about it and want their pounds of flesh. I ain't MAGA but I wouldn't blame 'em.
  6. https://www.zocalo.com.mx/silvana-y-maria-paula-lograron-salvar-a-20-ninas-durante-la-inundacion-en-un-campamento-de-texas/ I hadn't heard these two details: The storm was too loud for them to sleep (1 AM) The power went out at 3AM prompting these two counselors to move smaller campers somewhere more safe, presumably with lanterns and flashlights Can't help but wonder how and why the rest of the guardians hadn't taken advantage of these crucial hours.
  7. NWS probably has things they wish they'd done differently between the 1:14AM warning and 4:03AM emergency alerts, but it would be nitpicking.
  8. Being short staffed and its technology underfunded and neglected makes NWS fuckups much more likely. And despite all that, this was not one of their fuckups
  9. why aren't any of the drafted players seeing playing time?
  10. Lately it's more "God has a different plan for Family B"
  11. That Texas Monthly story (which goes in depth into those figures and ends with a bitter intra-family lawsuit over a financial mess) paints a picture of an extremely exclusive place for the Country Club crowd, and the article does indicate that the "in your face" Bible programming was put there by the new management.
  12. oh i know, but lurkers might have trouble keeping up and i want as much daylight between the posters who seek accountability and assholes who only want to crow
  13. Seizing the opportunity to discuss policy solutions during the tiny window of time when people actually feel like thinking about the issue is not "spiking the football" but I understand why some people can't tell the difference between being criticized and being confronted with undeniable facts about the consequences of the ineffective policy solutions they have supported. Trust me. Nobody takes any pleasure in this. We're seizing this opportunity because we hope these discussions lead to changes that will lower future death tolls.
  14. The people who need to hear it most are the ones who consistently tune it out
  15. squeezing it in before Butlerpalooza?
  16. a fake news reporter making things political
  17. This is the sort of bullshit that "now is not the time" should apply to, not the dialogue surrounding safety infrastructure and the politicians who defund it.
  18. triple dog dare you to post this in DT
  19. They got huge tax breaks, but for the record I don't think they deserved to lose their children. I oppose all forms of excessive punishment, regardless of party affiliation, race, or immigration status.
  20. It means "hold the line" because to their base nothing not even their own children matters more than MAGA loyalty.
  21. You're right about that, but in this particular case according to the Texas Monthly article these directors made sure the Bible stuff was a bit more pronounced
  22. The bolded part is the reason why it won't be like Uvalde
  23. That article is fascinating thank you for posting it
