I have mixed emotions about recommending Mi Tierra.  The chips and salsa are very good.  Their enchiladas are pretty good, but there are most likely better options.

Mi Tierra has great menudo 24/7  I never miss the chance to drop by there.

An underrated Italian gem was Stelline's in north Austin.

Agree on Stelline's.  That was chef Harvey Harris' first foray into having his own restaurant after spending time at Mezzaluna and prior to that in Houston (Maybe Damian's?).

He's been the chef at Sienna forever.  I like Sienna a bunch.

I mentioned this a few years ago when I saw the report, could obviously be a very different environment these days.  But that store at 45th & Lamar, that was one of the Top 10 Chili's in all of North America in terms of gross receipts.  Meaning, not only were people skipping over dozens of great restaurants within a few miles radius of that place, but when they went in.....they were spending serious money.  That just blows my mind.  To pick Chili's and then spend $50/person.  Having said that, I've spent $50 at airport Chili's.  The myth that paces like Chili's and Applebee's are affordable spots for working class families is just ridiculous.

As for best Austin restaurant, it's not possible to name.  We are fortunate to have so many superlative restaurants covering almost every cuisine and type and taste.  We've also lost a number of great restaurants over the last 5 years or so.  But based on crowd size/wait time---Olive Garden on South Lamar still reigns supreme.

    An authentic Austin vibe:

Any recs for a really good “this is what Austin is all about” place for tomorrow?  One that doesn’t include a 2 hour wait in line like Franklins?

Texas Chili Parlor, Scholz's, Dirty Martins, El Patio, Matt's, Terry Black's, Juan in a Million -- I'm old school.

Looking for a rec on a place to stop and grab lunch on 290 somewhere between Houston and Austin this coming Friday. Was initially thinking BBQ but maybe instead a place with barbacoa, brisket tacos...etc.

It's been a while since I've been there, but Zimmerhanzel's in Smithville has been known to make some decent 'cue.  Give us a report wherever you go.

Ban user.  I focused on the "between Austin and Houston" part, but missed the 290 part!

  6. Mamma's is good, but maybe a bit overrated. I love Merriman's and Roy's, with great stores all over Hawaii.  Paia Fish Market, which also has multiple locations, is pretty solid.  Enjoy the ride.

This storm is about to witness the firepower of the fully armed and operational Austin Forcefield.

IDK about that.  No rain yet, but the big winds just arrived at our country place near Liberty Hill.

  8. A friend has a family history of colon cancer so she's been doing colonoscopies annually since she was 40 -- that's 20+ years.  She is also a dietitian.  She has found that it is way easier to go through all of the prep if you start 12-24 hours earlier than what the "blow it all out of your butt in the last few hours" instructions say.

My wife and I have followed her advice and had no issues at all.  I also followed another friend's advice that "vodka is a clear liquid" to take the edge off of the prep fasting!

No kidding about the great sleep during the procedure.

I saw a strange thing today. A rebel was being arrested by the military police. And rather than be taken alive he exploded a grenade he had hidden in his jacket. He killed himself and took a captain of the command with him. Now, soldiers are paid to fight; the rebels aren't.

    What does that tell you?

    They can win

That exchange between Michael and Roth was the first thing I thought of when I saw this story happening today.  The movie clip I posted above had lots of other stuff, but it was the only thing that I could find that included that dialogue.

Just checking back with Fox News and CNN.  Nada.

It’s like the Weather Channel on a Saturday or Sunday, when there is a tornado outbreak across the plains, or a Hurricane approaching Texas, and they are showing “Storm Stories.”  Jeez

Somehow the expatriate Cuban population in Miami figured it out despite the media blackout!  Libertad!
