  1. Thinking of Louie's 106 also reminded me of a time period when I would do lunch, drinks, and/or dinner (why not both? GIF goes here) at Shoreline Grill at 98 San Jacinto next to the Four Seasons almost weekly, sometimes even for a weekend dinner party.  Such a cool location, nice deck, and really good food.

My first car was this 69 mustang.

I still have it because in my senior year my dad traded me his 85 IROC Z for a few months.  I drove the IROC off a cliff on a tight corner and wedged it between the side of the hill and a tree.  Couldn't open either door and had to take off t-tops to get out.  Wish I could find a picture of that.

I had the Mach I version of that car for my first one.  White with black hood and red stripes and red interior.  Wish I still had it!

  3. Best Menudo -- The Original Herrera's Cafe, now located on Sylvan, south of the river.  I've been with these guys since the early 1980s through three different locations on Maple before they moved to the current location.  Very solid Tex-Mex, but the menudo on the weekends is just the best.

We had a really fun time but my KC-style NY strip was absolutely embarrassing. The taste was good but it was thin AF and they WAY overcooked it. My go-to fancy steakhouse move is to order medium rare-plus and it works beautifully when it's a thick-ass cut as it normally is. My wife's friend's fiancee ordered the same cut and his looked much thicker. Like I said it tasted very good but I do a better job on choice NY strips from Central Market at a third of the cost.

    But how was your carrot?

  5. Great place, but I always end up hanging out in the cigar bar drinking whiskey, eating from the bar menu and never setting foot in the restaurant proper.

Interior Mexican food -- not Tex-Mex.

  6. It won't take long.  We were out working on and filling feeders out in West Hill Country this weekend and were joking (kinda) about hunting with a call that sounded like a feeder going off and wondering how quickly the deer would come to it!

  7. I watched (what I could stand) out at the deer lease last night.  I was screaming "tempo" on every Texas offensive possession.  The Horn's offense never seemed to act like it was an offense and to really try to take it to them.  If this is really "all gas, no brakes" -- I am not a fan.

Didn't want to start a new thread -- any recs for a central Austin place with outdoor seating for an early (11:15) casual weekday business lunch?  Doesn't have to be the usual out-of-towner type place, the guys I'm meeting up with live in Dallas and San Antonio, so I'm pretty sure they're well versed in Tex-Mex and BBQ.  That said, there's nothing wrong with Tex-Mex or BBQ, so both are definitely in the running.  Doesn't have to be right on Anderson, just within a few miles is cool.

    Jack Allen's on Anderson Lane.

  9. Rooster was the real deal.  My wife and I lived in a rented duplex in the Pemberton area in the 1980s.  We would see Rooster and his bride out walking most every evening.  We only had some "friends of friends" types of connections, but they would invariably stop and chat with us.  Good folks.

I grew up eating Tex-Mex at La Fiesta on North Loop at Burnet Road.  I'm not sure of the family connections, but the Jardin Corona guys seem to be carrying the mantle in central Texas.  Stores in Liberty Hill and downtown Marble Falls, too.

And (full disclosure, Matt's was a client), I love to go there, but my food expectations are lower there.  Great drinks, though!

Nah, by resisting Perry and Sandefer, the University showed its independence from the governor, and even the lege.

Besides, the administration didn't need any help from Abbott to make this call.

I'm sure the fact that a lot of alumni that are donors, big and small, would have been pissed if the song had been trashed played a role.

But the simple fact that the song is deeply meaningful to the vast majority of alumni, holding no racial animus whatsoever.

Had there been a stronger connection to racism, or any actual racist content, it would be gone.

I was always kind of offended by that statue of George Washington wanking it on the Main Mall, but nobody ever listened to me.  Thought that it depicted white men in a bad way.
