Same Monday thru Thurs. Start at 0800 thru 4 most days. The program we are using was really good with helping set up schedules.  We are still playing with it, but so far so good.

Wow -- that's a lot of structured time.  I've mentioned previously that we did 2-3 hours of on-task time, then did lots of other stuff like turning making lunch or going to the grocery store into a math lesson. Going to the park for PE (and convincing the popo that they weren't truants.)  Field trips to museums and art galleries (or the deer lease.)  Then allowing for lots of individual reading time -- no computers.  My advice is to not fall into the same rigid structure that the public schools follow and let your kids find their own way that they best learn.  YMMV, of course.  Best of luck to all y'all.

We are two kids one class each into this and so far so good. Actually a step up in quality. Only thing we have to solve for is social but we may not go back if it stays as good as it’s trending.

Homeschooling veteran here.  Both kids are now college grads.  Y'all are gonna be surprised at how efficient education can be when your kids aren't having to spend time standing in line, or preparing to stand in line, or dealing with disruptive kids in the class.  2 or 3 hours of actual school work is a solid day and provides the kids with plenty of time to read on their own.  Good luck, y'all.

  3. I hate to say it, but Oklahoma actually does this correctly.

    Merge Now

    Question:

What is the proper way to merge when approaching a highway work zone?

    Answer:

The key issue here is courtesy. Safe and efficient movement of traffic through the merging area approaching a work zone lane closure depends on the merging driver’s ability to plan ahead, adjust speed and merge into a safe gap between vehicles in the open lane. Merging is much easier and safer when all drivers act in a courteous manner and work together.

Since 2009, state law requires motorists to merge as soon as possible when they see “State Law: Merge Now” signs. This is a refined zipper merge and is designed to improve work zone safety for both workers and motorists. These signs are posted about a half mile ahead of construction and are meant to encourage drivers to change lanes before they get to the point where they have to merge. By merging earlier, it removes a conflict point thus improving the flow of traffic as it enters the work zone.

Did they open? Anyone know? Google is still saying temporarily closed.

    Happy Friday Friends,

After serious consideration we have decided to prolong the reopening of the restaurant once again, reopen date still undecided. Bottom line, it would be extremely difficult to be profitable under these current conditions and we want to survive another 94 years if possible! 👊👍🤘✌️

We appreciate everyone’s patience during this process. Our staff wants nothing more to get back to work and see our friends, but we want to make sure we can deliver that same old Dirty’s experience that you’re accustomed to.

We will be sending regular updates through Facebook and Instagram on our future plans or feel free to reach out to Daniel Young at daniel@dirtymartins.com with any other questions or if you just feel like sharing some memories.

    Much love ✌️

  5. I'm a fan of J. Frank Dobie.  I just re-read "A Vaquero of the Brush Country."  Great book and he makes the scene come alive with his writing.  What a bunch of candy-asses we all are compared to those bad-ass guys who settled and scratched out a living back then.

Luxury brands have the shortest warranties

One theory: luxury brands can't sell many cars new.  So they pump the big discounts into the lease.  When they get the car back (because who keeps these leases nearing end of warranty...), they make up the difference by marking it up as certified pre-owned.

I've never gone the CPO route.  The markup isn't worth it, IMHO.  I've not had a bad MB purchase thus far (knocking on my burled wood dashboard.)

Buy the luxury car coming off of a 3 year lease with low miles and dealer service records and a few years of warranty still left.

Yep.  I've been saying this for a long time here and on TOS.  I've been doing 30k-ish Mercedes E350s (or equivalent) for over 30 years.  Never paid more than $25k for a car and have always gotten over 150k out of them.  Let somebody else buy it new.  But you need to find a good independent automotive shop.  The luxury car dealership shops will kill you moneywise.

  8. I've done several heads in a pit that I built.  Make a heavy mesquite fire until there is a solid bed of coals.  Pull a big bucket of coals out of the pit, put in the head and shovel the bucket of coals back on top of it.  I cover the pit with a lid of sheet metal and put dirt over that to keep in the heat and smoke.

As to the head, I leave the tongue in and fill up the mouth with onions, garlic cloves, and celery.  Heavy kosher salt and rough grind pepper inside and out of the head.  Tightly wrap the head in heavy duty aluminum foil with several layers.  I've never timed it too closely, but if I put the head in the pit before bed time, there will be a barbacoa feast at lunch the next day.  10-12 hours, I'm guessing.

All that said, while they aren't the show-stopper that a whole head is -- beef cheeks are way easier and the finished product is really great.

Fuck 'em.  We'll pipe it in.  Buncha goddamn dorks anyway.

The current LHB director has been playing it way too uptempo lately anyway.  Play a recording from the great LHB days under the direction of Vincent R. DiNino during the DKR era.  That should also help the current era snowflakes with their social distancing.  Win-win.

  10. Longhorn Band is getting woke.  Drum Major refuses to conduct "The Eyes."  Many LHB members will also refuse to play the song.  Also, no on field performances by the LHB due to "social distancing."  Sounds like a real shit show is shaping up for this fall.

Just saw this. A few years ago, I made a roux with almond flour once for a friend who is allergic to gluten. It darkens very quickly so be on top of it. Flavor wise, there was no difference. What was different was that it was silky smooth, kinda like the consistency of chocolate milk. Granted, I didn’t eat a whole bowl of it since I just made that small batch on the side for her, but from my taste test, I thought it may have been better.

l did something similar for a friend who has big problems with gluten.  Pulled aside some of the ingredients from the big gumbo I was making and made a small batch without roux.  Then added a slurry of corn starch and water at the end to thicken it up.  I wouldn't have eaten it, but she was pleased to have it.

Still no timeline, and nothing is ever a done deal until the doors open, but I now feel comfortable in saying at some point an HEB will open at 504 Lavaca where the Chase drive through bank is currently.

There are currently six levels of parking above, so there should be no shortage of parking for the store.

Also, I believe HEB will be taking over all or some of the four levels of office space in the building.

During the construction of the store the entire building is to be renovated from top to bottom.

    Perhaps there is something happening?

  13. Just did my "Real ID" in-person license renewal at the Pflugerville DPS license center today.  It was a piece of cake. Due to the Covid stuff, they just make you read a physical chart on the wall using both eyes-- no testing of one eye vs. the other.  I passed the vision test without wearing the one contact that I usually only wear at night.  I was able to remove the prior vision restriction from my new license.

Can't say enough about how smooth the new online appointment process worked.  I had an 8 am appointment, they let me in at 7:45 am and my license was issued at 8:06 am.  I'd already filled out and printed the license application available online, so that seemed to speed up the process.  Wholly unlike a typical gubmint operation.  Kudos to them.
