  1. Live wherever you want, but stay away from satellite internet.  Expensive and unreliable.

Check out Wireless Digital Subscriber Line service providers.  It is a radio link from your home to a terrestrial ISP data source.  In our case we have a 50 ft tall tower (we had to get above some big trees) that has a radio receiver that bounces off of a transmitter located on a water tower a couple of miles from us.  It is broadband fast, very reliable, and costs around $150 a month for a pretty robust download/upload capacity subscription.  We probably dropped around $600-ish on the initial tower/installation.  Totally worth it.

Welp, nothing we liked in Texas had any availability for our dates (admittedly, we are booking last minute). So flying to Memphis and staying at the Peabody Hotel for 2 nights. Let's test these vaccines out!

Enjoy the ducks (and hopefully, some sexy time) at the Peabody.  Say hello to Elvis at Graceland.

  3. I confess that I am not doing a very good job of mentoring younger folks these days.  That said -- most of the mentoring that I received when I was a greenhorn didn't happen in the office -- it was over drinks after hours in the evening.  Once the senior partners learned that I could hang with them and knew some shit, they started trusting me with more important client relationships.

  4. I'm in the professional services space.  I control my client relationships and haven't needed to do office "facetime" for the last 20 years or so.  In fact, when I was on deadline or deep into a client project Pre-Covid, I'd get a hotel room to work in so that I could focus on the client deliverable without office interruptions.  Not having to make excuses for going dark for days at a time has been a great thing.  I'm gonna be taking a hard look at our office lease commitments as the renewals start coming up.

  5. 62 here.  I've long been of the opinion that you only have so many heartbeats allotted to you in a lifetime.

No sense in wasting them on stupid stuff like running and exercise.

    YMMV.

  6. I also love the uniformed talk against the long-standing step-up in basis doctrine.  It's simply a way to make the IRS your family's business partner due to the impact of inflation over a person's lifetime.

  7. And what's so sacrosanct about $50MM?  Why not start the tax at $5MM or $10MM?  Those folks are way richer than most people.  They can probably afford to pay more, amirite?

Regarding "25 or 6 to 4":  George Harrison ("While My Guitar Gently Weeps") and Led Zeppelin ("Babe I'm Gonna Leave You") have a thing or two to say about that.  But, it's a riff, not a sound, so judge's ruling is "acceptable".

I get the controversy about the 25 or 6 to 4 riff.  More importantly, listen closely to Terry Kath on that original recording.  He starts it off with some jazz/rock strumming then does other-worldly solos throughout the rest of the song.  He absolutely drives that song.

    In summary. Fuck Pinnacle Propane.

This.  They screwed the pooch with us this past April (after cold weather was over, of course, when the propane would just end up sitting in our tank until fall/winter) and filled our tank to the brim with propane at $1.25/gal above the EIA market price and $0.95/gal above their prior delivery price in early fall 2019 -- all in a period when market propane prices had been trending down.  When I questioned their pricing -- they said "corporate makes those decisions" -- so I made the decision to fire them.  I'm now getting deliveries from a new company at around the EIA market price.
