  1. F*** Casar and the COA.  I'm sure that the new train RFP from the COA Parks Department will be giving bonus points to solar-powered or other "environmentally sustainable" approaches to the train route.  Perhaps a gender-neutral pedal-powered "train" that includes homeless accommodations will emerge as the preferred solution?

So I am in quite the pickle.

Last year, I owed a decent chunk of change come tax time.  To remedy that situation, I maxed out my 401K contributions and decided to withhold an additional $100 per paycheck (so, M-3, +100).  I submitted the information to HR/payroll via our dumb ass portal and let it ride.  I made the incredibly foolish error of not double-checking any of my paychecks, at all.  I cannot describe how pissed I am at myself for that - lesson learned.

Why am I pissed might you ask?  It turns out, Payroll changed my withdrawal to only withhold $100 for FITW, total.  As I'm starting to do my taxes this year, I'm finally seeing the chickens come home to roost and wondering why I have a $13,000 tax bill.  I take a closer look at W2s....what the hell.....and realize, "FUCK"!

I'm in the process of getting this all corrected, but I'm wondering what my options are.  Of course, this is my cross to bear, so Payroll isn't going to give a fuck and isn't liable for anything (nor should they be, I suppose).  $13K is a lot. I can pay it in one lump sum but I don't want my savings to take that big of a hit at the start of the year.  Are payments an option?  Do I have to pay interest if I choose that?  If so, what does that typically look like?  File an extension and withhold a fuckload more - does that do anything?

    HALP!

IRS Form 9465 is your friend.  You are gonna incur some underpayment penalties due to your screw-up, but all of that plus your tax liability can be balled up into an installment loan from the IRS at the sweet rate of 3% per year.  Just about the cheapest money out there.

Anybody got any of these as heirlooms or collect them?  99's have a bit of a cult following and I can now see why - fantastic feeling rifle.

My regular shooter is a 99 in a .308.  Inherited it from my FIL.  Serial # says it was manufactured in the 1950s.  It's a great rifle.

  4. Keen Sr. was a petroleum engineer.  He was retired when I met him, but his prior work on a well completion had gotten him involved in some litigation.  He was a good guy.

I have influenced them in a number of ways, but probably the best and worst is with Merry Christmas from the Family.  It has been my now 16 year olds favorite for at least 5 years, and my now 9 year old knew every word in kindergarten.  I kept waiting for the note to come home asking what the "Mom got drunk and Dad got drunk" Christmas song was.

It is still the most played Christmas song in our household.

I knew Robert Earl Keen's Dad in connection with business.  We had lunch together at the Houston Petroleum Club and I asked him about that song.  He said that some points may have been exaggerated, but the essence of the song was true.

  6. My kids grew up on Chicago, Earth Wind & Fire, Eagles, Rush, The Messiah (London Philharmonic version), Merle Haggard and Jerry Jeff Walker.  They had a pretty well-rounded musical education.

Can confirm. Richard and Carol Gottleib of 1000 Lucinda Terrace, Georgetown, TX, 78628 are allegedly suing a terminally ill kid because his playground is scaring off clients of a business that Richard and Carole Gottleib run out of their home at 1000 Lucinda Terrace, Georgetown, TX, 78628.  That business is Big Gay Dick Gottleib's Chicken-Fried Rub-and-Tug.  Carole also sells hand creme.

    That is all true, allegedly.

Bummed about the Buck's BBQ news.  I have a client meeting tomorrow in Houston and the out of town client insists on going to Blood Bros. BBQ tomorrow for lunch.

This thread seems to be pretty meh about the place.  Anybody been there lately that hasn't posted about it?  Are there any sure winning items on their menu?  Thai green chile boudin sounds pretty good, but not very much like BBQ as I know it!  Thanks for any insight (or more likely, your snarky comments.)

Hit there around 12:30.  No line.  Was not impressed with my visit today.  Nothing was smoky.  Everything was dried out.  Hot links, black pepper links, brisket and burnt ends.  Brisket rice was OK.  Strong pickle and onion game, so they've got that going...which is nice.  Do not plan to return.

When I was a kid in Nashville, a trio of redneck stoners were foiled in attempting one of the most brazenly stupid, if extremely ambitious, criminal schemes in American history. They were planning to blow up Percy Priest dam east of Nashville with a few dozen sticks of dynamite and then somehow ride the ensuing Stones River floodwaters into the swollen Cumberland, and then navigate that deluge on into downtown Nashville, where, in the confusion, they would then loot the shit out of err-thang in sight.

They actually detonated the dynamite in a tunnel in the dam, but it only blew out some doors and damaged some pumps, totaling about $10,000 in 1979 money.

After their arrest an Army engineer called their plan "quite ridiculous" and said that even if they had a bomb powerful enough to bring the whole dam down, it would have barely caused a minor flood in the Cumberland. (The Stones is not one of America's mightier rivers. All three forks of it run through about two counties.)

The US attorney who prosecuted them called their scheme "insane" and said that not even a truckload of dynamite would have made a dent in the dam.

I'll never be able to make a gumbo as good as the Schooner, though.

Long live The Schooner -- may it always be a time machine to 1975 (or earlier) when we dine there!

Absolutely. It’s maybe my best gumbo.

Smoke 6-8 chicken quarters. Then, let them cool. Pick the meat, put it in a ziplock. Use the skin, bones, etc, to make your stock. Smoked chicken stock. Chunks of smoked chicken. It’s fantastic.

I did a gumbo with smoked turkey leg quarters and andouillie sausage (and some loose hot pork sausage to make some good grease for the roux) for New Years partying.  The big question for me was "do you involve okra and/or tomato in that gumbo?"  I chose not to and the results were glorious.

  13. Vodka is vodka once you get past the really lower bottom shelf stuff.  Plus, most of you heathens mix it with other stuff when you drink it, so you couldn't possibly know the difference between Tito's and any other decent vodka.  Kudo's to Tito's for their marketing.  And that's all I've got to say about that.
