  1. Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles near LAX for a multi-cultural culinary experience.  Santa Monica for beach, pier, and general hanging out.  Reagan Presidential Library for some learning (plus walking through Air Force One is pretty cool).

My service advisor does everything short of draining my balls when I come in for a service.

He should.  You are probably paying at least double (or more) for the service you could get at an independent shop.  Those "free" cups of coffee at the MB dealerships are damned expensive.

I've always been confused about the duties of constables and sheriffs for counties like Harris where a city almost fills the whole damn county. The city has its own PD. Why do you need these other rednecks?

"Together, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the Harris County Constable Offices, the Houston Police Department (HPD), the 29 small city police forces, and the more than 20 other law enforcement agencies operating in Harris County spend at least $1.6 billion per year on law enforcement. Together, these more than 60 law enforcement agencies in the county employ approximately 12,000 sworn officers."

I mentioned earlier that the state owns around 30% of the economy. The reason it’s that much is because Venezuela has very little economic diversity (also a pre-Chavez problem) and that 30% number is almost exclusively from the oil industry. So again, when you say “go full venezuela,” understand that people quite reasonably want to know what that means.

The cited 30% number not withstanding, it isn't much of a private sector when there are government imposed price controls, currency controls, rationing, confiscation, political and government control over imports and distribution, among other policy trainwrecks.  That's what "go full Venezuela" means.

Yes, e's and s's are good, c's not so much.

My one bad MB buy was a very sporty 2005 C230 Kompressor that I bought as a surprise for my bride to celebrate the fact that the kids were now grown up, had their own cars, and that she didn't have to drive a mini-van any more.  Bad move.  That car had so many issues.  We off-loaded it after a couple of years.

I did that when I was 17 - drank most of a handle of vodka on my own

Woke up In a hospital, strapped to a gurney with and IV in each arm, a catheter, and my clothes cut off me.

I’m 36 - straight vodka will still make me gag.

Survival instinct is a real thing.

Things have apparently changed with the criteria for the FAA grounding policies since the early 1960s.

I recall flying to Kansa City in a Lockheed Electra turboprop in May, 1960. That model had been in service only since the previous year and had experienced 3 catastrophic crashes (wings kept falling off), with the last one occurring two months before. Supposedly to lessen the danger, the 400 knot plane was restricted to a slower speed for the time being while they figured out what the problem was.

The fault was found and modifications were made later in that year. Nonetheless, on our flight prior to the modifications, the pilot announced our airspeed as 400 (don’t remember if he said knots or mph). Anyway, my brother said “uh-oh”.... and Mom asked what was wrong. Bro replied that “at this speed the wings can fall off”, making us all feel thrilled to no end. Lulz.

When we landed in KC and were taxiing to the terminal, I puked into my barf bag then carefully sealed it and placed it back into the seat pocket in front on me. Was too embarrassed to tell anyone.

Glad that you survived. "Of the total of 170 Electras built, as of June 2011, 58 have been written off because of crashes and other accidents."

I haven't read any of his stuff, but I practice Stoicism, and A Man in Full is on the recommended reading list. The blurb on the back didn't sound super compelling to me, but you'd recommend it?

Don't know Stoicism, but A Man in Full is a terrific novel.  Wolfe develops all of the characters so well.

  9. Just black E's.  Started with a 1991 190.  Had a couple of 320s, then a 350 (that I retired at 250k) and am currently with a 2009 350 that's around 100k.  I'm a fan of the 6 cylinder engines -- plenty of speed and decent gas mileage on the road.  All have been great cars.

And the latter is why I will never own an M-B or BMW, as attractive as they may be.  The only time I have spent 700 on my now 8 year old Cadillac is tires and a water pump at 85,000.

I'm just too cheap for that shit.  And with my luck, I'd wind up getting a lemon.

I've been driving only MB's for the past 25 years or so.  Solid and reliable cars.  Never go to a dealership for service.  There are many independent shops that can maintain a MB, BWM or other high-end cars for a fraction of what the dealerships charge.  I've been using these guys for the last 15 years or so:  https://nwimports.com/

I wish it were socially acceptable in the US to use mayo as a condiment for french fries. The Dutch have it figured out.

I do french fries with mayo all the time.  I thought that it was a Brit thing, but I welcome the Dutch to the party.

Elmer Kelton's The Time it Never Rained was set in 1950's West Texas, but I consider it a western.  Damn good book.

This is a great book.  Shades of Ayn Rand set in the 1950's West Texas drought.  Charlie Flagg is not John Galt, but they have some similar traits.
