I’m a little disgruntled that you would put ninfa’s in the same category as the others but I endorse the point. The original Ninfa's on Navigation is nothing like the others. YMMV.

FWIW, our family has some East Texas timberland. Our forester has recently advised us about a big change in his approach to timber management. He has moved from a 35 year to a 25 year management horizon. He says that almost nobody is interested in anything bigger than 2x4s these days, and if they want something bigger they will use the smaller boards and adhesives to make what they want. I don't know if this industry development has anything to do with the change in valuation, but obviously a 25 year horizon vs. a 35 year horizon would impact the valuation a bunch.

Vodka or Gin goes well with Zing Zang -- or so I'm told.

The burger category reminds me of how much I miss Snookie's on Oak Lawn.

Thanks for setting this up @immamac! Is there going to be a password or something we need to know this year?
"Muledick" has always worked for me.

Joe T’s is absolute garbage and a joke of an excuse for Tex-Mex.
Shut your whore mouth! Joe T. Garcia's is a Tex-Mex shrine. As is Matt's El Rancho in Austin. Ojeda's in Dallas. Navigation Ninfa's in Houston. Mi Tierra in San Antonio. Long live these shrines!

I was on a criminal jury panel in Travis County around 15 years ago. Once we all got there, I noticed that the panel that actually showed up lacked chromatic diversity -- heavily on the light-skinned side. One after another, criminal defendants and their attorney's appeared to begin their voir dior. It was obvious that the attorney's were counting heads of the very few folks that looked like the defendants. One defendant after another announced that they would accept a plea deal. The judge ultimately came out right before lunch to thank us for our service -- our panel had cleared out their entire criminal docket scheduled for that week!

They both have that carpet vs. drapes look going for them.

I have their gazpacho recipe. I make it regularly. It’s glorious.
Yep. I've made it several times, as well.
This is a link to the recipe I have used:

I grew up in Austin and pretty much thought that Coach Royal hung the moon from the git go. First game attended was in 1968 vs. SMU in the end zone knothole section with a bunch of kids from my neighborhood. Both teams were ranked, but Longhorns won handily.
Moreover, I was very impressed with the SMU twirler! Priorities!

You will miss all the shots that you don't take.

Thinking of Louie's 106 also reminded me of a time period when I would do lunch, drinks, and/or dinner (why not both? GIF goes here) at Shoreline Grill at 98 San Jacinto next to the Four Seasons almost weekly, sometimes even for a weekend dinner party. Such a cool location, nice deck, and really good food.

SIAP. Louie’s 106. Was ahead of its time before Austin’s food scene blew up.
Their gazpacho with crab and avocado was a must-have every time I went there, be it lunch or dinner.

My first car was this 69 mustang.
I still have it because in my senior year my dad traded me his 85 IROC Z for a few months. I drove the IROC off a cliff on a tight corner and wedged it between the side of the hill and a tree. Couldn't open either door and had to take off t-tops to get out. Wish I could find a picture of that.
I had the Mach I version of that car for my first one. White with black hood and red stripes and red interior. Wish I still had it!

You are not alone, indeed. This Surly is having some 100 proof bourbon, neat, in downtown Dallas tonight. It would be sad to be drinking alone!

Vietnam Restaurant, also on Bryan Street, also has solid pho. Lots of options, including tendons, tripe, and meatballs, along with the traditional round and brisket beef.

Best bowl of pho I have had in DFW is in Haltom.
I'm still on team Mai's on Bryan Street for pho when I am in Dallas. Very cool that it is catty cornered from Jimmy's -- yet another great place, just a different food genre.

Have to disagree. Best menudo is at Mis Cazuelas.
Disagreement is good. Surly Menudo talk not going away!

Best Menudo -- The Original Herrera's Cafe, now located on Sylvan, south of the river. I've been with these guys since the early 1980s through three different locations on Maple before they moved to the current location. Very solid Tex-Mex, but the menudo on the weekends is just the best.

We had a really fun time but my KC-style NY strip was absolutely embarrassing. The taste was good but it was thin AF and they WAY overcooked it. My go-to fancy steakhouse move is to order medium rare-plus and it works beautifully when it's a thick-ass cut as it normally is. My wife's friend's fiancee ordered the same cut and his looked much thicker. Like I said it tasted very good but I do a better job on choice NY strips from Central Market at a third of the cost.
But how was your carrot?
