It wasn't my first,  but first I can remember and speak to is 1992 houston.   The loudest I've ever heard DKR.

I watched that Houston game on TV on my deck in Northwest Hills while drinking and smoking cigars.  I could hear the roar from the stadium all the way up there.  Great game.

  2. First longhorn football game attended was 1972 vs. SMU.  Horns won 17-9.  That was back when they had a knothole section in the south end zone, mostly for kids.  Maybe $5 per ticket?

First longhorn football game attended as a student was 1977 vs. Boston College.  Horns won 44-0.  Earl was a beast.  1977 was a fun football season and ruined my longhorn football expectations for life!

Bad hip pain and maybe a bit too heavy on the pain meds?

That was my first thought.  "Mixed drug toxicity" just like what did in Tom Petty when he was dealing with pain.

Huge losses of very talented people.

I met Glenn the one time we ate at Drake's and he was super nice, gave us his card and said call him if we ever needed anything. Turns out he knew a close friend of mine, who was the founding chef/owner at Tramontana in Preston Center (longtime DMN Top 100 spot where Montlake Cut is). Same guy was the first chef who opened Al Biernat's with Al 20+ years ago. They crossed paths at Pappas Restaurant group when my buddy went to work for them as their company-wide quality control chef. He knew Govias from there and said he was a great dude. I heard Govias got booted for trying to fraternize way too much with the clientele. Have no idea if that's true or not.

Thanks, Troph.  I remember this game well, but don't think I'd ever seen the video.  Was doing normal Saturday chores with my wife and listening on the car radio.  Was waiting in line at a car wash and ended up in the wash in total radio silence on the final play.  Couldn't believe that we won!

Making some progress.  This group is like clockwork.  It is so green and there is so much to eat, the older bucks are not coming around much at all.

If I had to guess and its who I think it is - that's one of them standing off at about 2:00 monitoring they youngsters on a drive-by.

But for pho, Tan My has been my favorite in Austin for at least a couple decades.

Good pho, for sure, but my kids were always creeped out by the guy with the bearded mole.

  10. Hadn't heard about Hao Q closing, though I read that the new place at that location planned to keep some of the old menu and add some Filipino influences to the new menu.

Pho Saigon in the Asian shopping center on North Lamar is my current favorite in Austin.  Phonatic on Anderson Lane is passable.  Good luck.

I've been to the 1604 location a few times and the private event menu was serviceable, but I wouldn't make a special trip.

I probably could have eaten my weight in "Shrimp Paesano" back when they were on McCullough -- right next to the original Biga.  Good eats on that street.

any specific recommendations for Italian in SA? open to go basically wherever and not too worried about price as long as it's awesome.

It's been a while since I've been there, but isn't Paesano's still one of the best places in SA for Italian?

The Mexican guys at work say Bill Miller actually has good carne guisada.

Unless you would prefer to have the fried chicken, which Surly says to be excellent.
