Well, THAT was inevitable! The old Carbone's filed suit in fed court today agains the hipster Carbone. The allegations are pretty damning. Should be interesting. I don't know what this could do in terms of the longevity of the hipster Carbone, but if you boys intend on going there, perhaps sooner would be better than later. https://www.docketalarm.com/cases/Texas_Northern_District_Court/3--22-cv-01184/CARBONES_FINE_FOODS_AND_WINES_LLC/1/

Ok, first consider I am a very young (read ... immature?) 63 year old. I like very good food and have not screamed "Get off my lawn" at the neighborhood kids for quite some time. (Although I have asked a few of them to bring their divorced mom over from time to time). Anyway, I digress ... Friday night, we had 10:45 reservations for 4 at Carbone. The mindset was very much, "cool, we get to dine very European." So, we drive up. You see a number of upscale cars parked, valet is right in front of restaurant. A tall, thin late 20 year old African American gentleman in a tuxedo and tennis shoes greets you at the door. Ok, they're going for more of an edgy look. That's cool. Inside, we had a brief (less than 5 minute wait) and are escorted to our table. The crowd is mostly late 20s to late 40s. Fairly racially diverse. The decor is a throw back to mid 80s Dallas with funkiness mixed in. Cushy chairs, loveseats, plush furnishings. For some reason, I get a feeling that perhaps they are trying awfully hard to "be something." In any event, let it go, just enjoy the food. That's when you notice the music being played in the background/foreground. It is 70s era disco music... BeeGees, Donna Summer, Abba. Loud enough that you have to speak somewhat loudly to carry on a conversation at the table. The wait person comes over, takes our drink order, is knowledgeable about the menu. And the free amuse bouche arrive .. three different types of bread, pickled cauliflower, soppressata and then much like Il Mulino, another waitstaff brings over a wheel of parmesan cheese and slices some for you. Very tasty. Ok.. .we are on track here. The appetizer course consisted of ... oysters and beets siciliana. The beets were excellent! We then order 3 entrees for the table. Spaghetti Puttanesca, Pork Chop and peppers, and our "go to" at any new Italian restaurant, veal parmesan. The Spaghetti was a bit ... flat. The pasta, although obviously cooked fresh, was bland and the sauce did not bring out the flavor. The Pork Chop was passable. The flavors were good especially as you got closer to the bone. But, quite frankly, Pork Chop Friday at Perry's Steakhouse was far better. Then, the veal parmesan. My understanding is that the veal cutlet is pounded for essentially two reasons, (1). it provides a quicker cooking time because it is uniformly even, and (2). the pounding breaks down connective tissue making the veal more tender. The veal that was brought to us was ... thick. The wait staff person sliced it and then served it like it was pizza. The flavors were not bad. But ... We finished with espresso martinis or French 75s. So, on a scale of 1 - 5 ... I give this place a 2.5. The food quality wise is on a level with Speranza in North Dallas but far more expensive. The music and atmosphere was too over the top. The Sommelier was in his late 40s, knew their wine menu well, but started dancing a bit to the music. So, in terms of upscale Italian, I will be returning to Monarch 10 times out of 10. As for Carbone, I may return if they have a "coupon" evening, otherwise...

  5. What the fuck happened to the Surly I used to know? Where's the spirit? Where's the guts, huh? This could be the greatest night of our lives ... but you're gonna let it be the worst. Oh, we're afraid to believe we are gonna kick their ass Bluto. We might get in trouble! Well just kiss me ass from now on! Not ME! I'm not gonna take this! Bama? DEAD!
  6. Should I have used, "Sweet Blue Jumpin' Mohammad on a unicyle" instead?
  7. Old Man Rant Mini-Rant time alert: What the blue hell does "dimes" have to do with assists? An assist is not 10 points. An assist is not a coin. Is it just a term taken from football (where it makes little sense as well) by some hipster, idoit announcer to make him look cool, or hip? We really just cant say "assist?" Jebus. Now... GET OFF MY LAWN DAMMIT~!

Este. Went there tonight. Dress up and they treat you even better. The food is incredible (and my SO is a bit of a food snob). Perhaps it is because I look a bit like an "oldz,", dressed up in the navy suit, bow tie, bald ass head, joking around with the wait staff ... the concierge of Monarch came up to us, started a great conversation, when we were through with our dinner, escorted us upstairs to their more informal bar, came up twice to check up. Oh, some hipster tried to get in with his ball cap on ... backwards of course ... the people at the the check in desk said, "uh. Sport, you need to leave that cap here with us." Food is excellent (on a level with the best Italian food in NYC), great atmosphere. Go and enjoy a 2 to 3 hour dining experience. Then ... go home and dog fuck the hell out of your SO! Lid! OUT!
  9. Are those burnt orange, Longhorn head cufflinks Coach is throwing down?
  10. So, this past year, UNC loses to: Tennessee by 17; Kentucky by 29; Miami by 28; Wake Forest by 24; Duke by 20; Pittsburgh by 9; Virginia Tech by 13 (on March 11); And are now playing for the national championship. Imma thinkin that UNC wins by 4 points or fewer... or Kansas wins by about 20.
  11. My juvenile sense of humor found this amusing.
  12. Well hell ... what a past few weeks it has been. I got a call on Thursday, Nov. 10 from the wife a very good friend of mine. Our children were in Indian Princess together. So, we have known each other for about 25 years. The day before, he went to his mom's house, saw his step nephew apparently trying to break into the house. Goes up to him. (The dude is 24 years old and is a body builder). A fight breaks out. A gunshot is heard by his wife. My friend slumps over. Shot in the head. The next morning, he is pulled off life support. Fortunately, a number of his organs were donated. 10 hours before, I had 2 doctor friends of mine send text messages to me asking if I had read the just released article from what they thought was a well-respected professional. This doctor opined that severe and enduring eating disorders could be terminal and those patients should be allowed to have physician assisted suicide. Good Lord. My daughter fought until her last breath. Tuesday, March 15, my SO gets a text from a long time client of hers. His wife who was fighting cancer, apparently went to UT Southwestern for routine treatment. AS I understand it, an embolism developed and went to her brain. Although they got her heart started, the damage was done. On March 16, she was removed from life support. The next day, March 17, I am standing up in St. Thomas Aquinas Church giving the eulogy for my dear friend. What do you say when their loss is so senseless? Fortunately, he had left a colorful history of his life on Facebook and in text messages to me. And sometimes, we are merely conduits for a greater message that those in such pain need. The circle becomes full tomorrow. On March 24, i am being awarded the 2022 Ruth Sharp Altshuler Community Advocate Award by Mental Health America. When I look back on past recipients, it is like a "who's who" of mental health providers. And I have done nothing yet to deserve this. I really have no choice and am being directed to this work by forces I am not meant to understand. The following day starts the real battle with a treatment center based in California and operating in St. Louis. Therapists supplying alcohol and illegal drugs to patients. Sexual contact with patients. Destruction of evidence. I currently represent 7 people who were hurt up there. 6 employees were fired. A multi-billion dollar private equity company owns them. They have one of the most powerful law firms representing them. And what do I have? The passion from a child dying compelling me to continue on this path? I don't know why i am writing this. Other than this is a good place to vent. No... more so than that. Despite all of the ass whippings on here. the amount of compassion and intelligence and understanding can be truly inspiring. So, Gentlemen, go give your kids a big hug. Tell them you love them. Embrace life. Embrace love. Turn obstacles into opportunities.
  13. He looks like Professor Fate from "The Great Race" to me ... has that Snidely Whiplash twirl his 'stache look about him.
  14. Being an "old" as Surly defines it, I would certainly entertain carnal relations with Charlotte Jones for a weekend. And Jean in her prime. Other than that, not so much.
  15. Fuckin A... America.. FUCK YEAH
  16. Four years ago, I would have gone ballistic at the eating disorder jokes. I would have railed about how eating disorders have the 2nd highest mortality rate among all mental illnesses, that death is always an abstract concept ... until it happens to you... etc. etc blah blah blah But now? It's don't be a Keyboard Warrior ... This is Surly, where the deer and the antelope play, were EVERYONE at one time or another is a target and you better have elephant hide thick skin. Oh.. and the term I use for Tess Holliday and people who follow her is ... "Militant Fat Activist -- Keyboard Division."
  17. Wow... definitely brought a tear to these old eyes. On a daily basis, I deal with, work with, represent people, mostly young women who struggle with mental health issues. With as much progress as has been made in the last 10 years discovering genetic links or predispositions toward certain recognized mental health illnesses, we are also exploring biological causes, mostly in the brain. And once the medical community can find biological causes or contributors, then new treatments can be developed and utilized ... like transcranial magnetic stimulus of the brain to treat depression. Once the biological aspects become public knowledge, it is hoped that much of the stigma will go away. This young man is an incredible example of heart, soul and brain overcoming his demons. (Even though he will still have struggles ahead). Would love to shake his hand one day.
  18. Fuckin' Haas. What an embarrassment. Haas has as much business being in F1, as Russian troops have of being in Ukraine.
  19. Imma thinkin change the color of HAAS from red to burnt orange. Put a Longhorn logo on the cowling and you have ... The Longhorn Racing Team. AND... it's in our Storm Trooper Whites look too.
  20. Ok, the Formula 1 Big Dog, Know A lot of Stuff people ... The winglets over the front tires. I understand they are there to help control the wake coming off the front tires and direct it away from the rear wings but ... Aren't those in prime position to be damaged during pit stops, and if so, what is going to be the impact on the performance of the car?
  21. Shouldn't that be: An Aggie does not; lie, cheat, steal nor tolerate those who do.
  22. uh.... Vince Young? Burrows had one year at LSU. What Vince did on the 40 Acres far exceeds Joey at LSU
  23. Not much difference in the records between Payton and McCarthy: Sean Payton: Mike McCarthy: 131-77 record 125-77-2 record .630 winning percentage .618 winning percentage, 6 division titles 6 division titles 8-7 playoff record 10-8 playoff record 3 NFC title games 4 NFC title games 1 Super Bowl ring 1 Super Bowl ring Payton lived off of Drw Brees. McCarthy lived off of Rodgers.
  24. Indeed a catchy tune. But, the French have been stabbing their fellow allies in the back going back as least as far as King Phillip II who reneged on his vows during the Third Crusade while in the Holy Land, took over lands owned by King Richard I (the Lionheart) when he remained, to the French being duplicitous During the Falklands Conflict, to not allowing our fighter jets overflight privileges when we were going after Libya ...the list goes on and on. Yes, the French make great wine, cheese, their artists in the past have been incredible .. but, to some, their National Anthem does not stir feelings of loyalty, strength and power.
