  1. You are correct. This is a practice I should adopt. Honestly, I just threw the 2 hours out there as an upper bound, but I can't think of a time that I've actually done it for that long. 45 minutes to an hour... I've done that plenty, and I should stop. But the numbers comparing energy usage between EVs and ICE vehicles are undeniable. The "bUT ThEY cHARge FrOm ThE gRiD" gotcha falls completely flat when confronted with facts. EVs on average only get about 80% of their "fuel" from fossil fuels and then they are five times more efficient with that "fuel" than an ICE vehicle. Yes, I can do better, but it's a pretty rich criticism from anyone who drives an ICE vehicle.
  2. Yes, they obviously have to be recharged from the grid. In the US, an average of 20% of power in the grid is supplied by renewables. In some places that number is nearly double. In general, EVs get a good chunk of their charge from renewable sources. Now look at how efficient an EV is with that available energy compared to an ICE vehicle. There is the equivalent of 33.7 kWh (this is the figure that the EPA uses) of energy in a gallon of gas. The average efficiency for my Model 3 based on my driving habits and history is about 251 Wh per mile. Which means that my Model 3 gets the equivalent of 134 mpg. EVs are exceptionally efficient compared to ICE vehicles. When I am running the AC, it draws about 700W. Leaving the AC on in my Tesla for 2 hours uses the same amount of energy that your ICE vehicle burns driving for just 1 mile. Is it slightly wasteful to do this once or twice a week? Sure, but it’s not like I’m leaving a Super Duty idling in the parking lot. The energy waste from my little indulgence is a drop in the ocean compared to the daily energy waste of a typical ICE vehicle.
  3. Nice gutsy win after kicking away the first lead.
  4. See how much time you have with Perez, Peña?
  5. I muted the TV and synced up the radio broadcast through MLB At Bat. Ford had me out of my chair with that call. I guess since Kalas is off, someone had to pick up the mantle tonight.
  6. Good call since we’re tied.
  7. We’ll fuckin take it.
  8. Alex Tosi can suffer the same fate that Ray Finkle’s mom wished on Dan Marino.
  9. We have to be out of bullets in the gun we keep shooting ourselves in the foot with, don’t we?
  10. How are “major league hitters” late on a jag that is around 92 with his FB?
  11. How many times has this happened in the past 10 games. 6 or 7?
  12. Well… these OF moves are paying off in the short term.
  13. Nice English Big Jon.
  14. Fuckin horseshit blue.
  15. I can’t put my finger on why he annoys me so much. I just don’t like him. At all.
  16. Finally watched now that it is on Netflix and all I can say is “sigh.” CW level production values and an indecipherable storyline. We wanted red beans and rice with andouille and we got a can of Van de Kamp pork and beans with Bar S wieners.
  17. I’ll buy $.0008 worth of carbon credits every time I do it.
  18. Oh there’s no lie. That’s a 100% accurate description of the reality and depth of thought present in this thread.
  19. Focus, people. Elon is a shitbag and anything remotely connected with him reeks and consists of said shit. We will brook no disagreement with this fundamental fact of the Surly universe.
  20. Ram has been a separate company since 2010.
  21. You can't just leave a Tesla "running." It will turn itself off after you lock and walk away from the vehicle. You can, however, set the climate control to "Keep Climate On" mode or "Camp" mode which will maintain the set internal temperature until battery is reduced to 20%. The owner's manual specifically states that "Dog" mode is not intended for people. All that "Dog" mode does in addition to keeping the internal temperature is display the current internal temperature and a message that the dog is safe for passers-by. I love "Keep" mode. If I am going to be inside for less than two hours, I will always leave "Keep" mode on and come back to a nice, cool vehicle in the summer and vice versa in the winter.
  22. Considering this has been a feature since 2019, there is a significant data lag on the slew of toddler deaths you predicted. Or you could just be wrong.
  23. Let's be clear about one thing. I have only ever spoke in defense of Tesla and some of its products. I have never once defended or praised Musk himself. The overall point that I was raising about the Consumer Reports article above is that it compares the quality the first 5-10 years of product from a start-up bringing a new technology to market with established technologies made by traditional manufacturers, many with 100+ years of experience in delivering vehicles. Can you compare them? Yes, you can. Can you really draw any meaningful information about the long-term reliability of Tesla's crop of vehicles from the past five years? That's debatable. I can look at 5-10 year old data from Toyota, Ford, and BMW and be relatively confident that the pattern will hold for the next decade. You can't really do the same with the data from 5-10 year-old Teslas. 5-10 year old data for Tesla is from it's earliest days of being the first to market with viable consumer BEVs. It's anomalous data due to the life-cycle stage of Tesla as a manufacturing company and BEVs as a technology.
