  1. Seen him a few times. The first was in ~99 with Paul Simon at Erwin Center with Charlie Sexton in the band. By far the best show of his I saw. This might have been the show where he put in a plug for Jupiter Records at Hancock Center (I think). It was weird and about the only thing he said all night.
  2. One of the beat live albums ever. The Isis and Hattie Carrol are both bad ass. Mama you been on my mind with Joan Baez is awesome too. The Like a Rolling Stone from the live Dylan and The Band album is my favorite version of that.
  3. Funny. Nashville Skyline is my favorite Dylan album. The musicianship on that album is as good as the songwriting. Of all of his songs, Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right might be my favorite. His demo version on the No Direction Home soundtrack is fantastic. His fingerpicking is beautiful and the lyrics are on another level. “I give her my heart but she wanted my soul“ Just brilliant.
  4. Is anyone else enjoying the Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast? I am through the Dire Wolf episode (they are doing an episode for each song on Workingman’s Dead). It is fun to hear a lot of new info about them. At the end of that episode, they cut together a chronological live mash-up version from the first time played in 69 to the last in 95. It is great to hear their sound evolve through one song. Also, early on, Jerry played pedal-steel and Bob sang lead. Weird to hear.
  5. Great show! Of things on Spotify from that era, I really like the Hampton 89 shows (warlocks box set). I also just discovered the Spring 90 Other One sampler which has some great tracks from that tour.
  6. Thanks for the tip- I figured that out tonight while grilling a shit-ton of wings for my in-laws anniversary (tradition). I got eaten alive!
  7. We just got to Surfside today. I hope you weren’t the fucks that broke a bunch of shit (chairs, picture frames, railings, ...) in our VRBO and delayed us getting into our place. Anyway, the beach was crowded as fuck when we pulled in today. We are hoping it chills out the next few days. how was your stay? We brought everything we should need, but any info would be appreciated.
  8. Just got the last Redemption Wheated on the shelf at Twin Liquors South Lamar. Can’t wait to try it. They have a bottles of OWA and Blanton’s and a 375ml of Eagle Rare at the front counter, but they are each bundled with a bottle of something random and you have to buy both to get them. The OWA was over $100 for the pair, so I didn’t bother asking about the other two. Thought someone might be interested.
  9. It will be interesting to see how the nursing homes fare. I have mentioned previously I work in a pharmacy that provides meds and other services to homes. The census counts at the homes are way down because lots of residents stay short term after surgeries and that is not happening at any real volume. Also, folks seem more willing to take care of difficult to care for relatives these days so they aren’t getting dumped into homes at the same rate. As a result, they are way less crowded than normal and hopefully that will help limit spread. Part of the uptick is an effort that started last week by CVS and the state to test every resident and staff member in the state. A person I talk to every day is involved in this (like sits in the home with the testers, watching results). He says the nurses are continually surprised by how many positives are asymptomatic (unscientific, but he guesses at least 20- 25%), even in this vulnerable population. This virus is weird and keeps surprising.
  10. I am listening to the Dark Star from 3/28/73 (DaP16) while sipping some bourbon. I am working on my final exam project and trying to chill out after a big parenting fail earlier. I feel terrible and nothing like the Dead to help out in such times It is a nice 30 min version. The second set ends with Weather Report Prelude>Dark Star>Eyes>Playin. Pretty epic, one of a kind sequence. The first set has a really good early Here Comes Sunshine, too. Tomorrow I will probably revisit 7/17/76 (DaP18). I didn’t list it in my top 3 of the series, but only because I forgot. I guess it is top 4. My favorite show of that year. The sequence starting with Comes a Time is as good as it gets. Cheers!
  11. I would totally wear those, but lack the motivation to try to get some. I think I’d get yellow given a choice. Gonna check out 7/15/89 tonight. I have listened to the alpine valley shows a lot but not Deer Creek. I heard a bit on XM on my way home and it sounded pretty good. I got to see Phish there in 99, but not the Dead. It was a fun scene.
  12. Great thread! About 6 months ago I started lurking here when I started drinking bourbon more. I knew next to nothing and have been using this thread as a guide. I’ll keep lurking to figure out what to get next. Maybe a Texas bourbon or something I haven’t tried yet (OF, EC, 4R, .........). Thanks everyone! Here is what I have on my shelf right now.
  13. I am working on my final project for the Masters class I am taking and listening to a bunch of Dead. Last night DeKalb 77 and today Jai Alai Fronton 74. Both are as good a show as you will find either year. I was talking earlier about what a big fan I am of the latter half of 72. At the end of the post is a write up I found on the interweb from Dick Latvala. I don't know if I share his taste or am influenced by it, but I always love his recommendations. I will have to check out the other two Stanley Theater shows and 10/18/72 next. I love the 11/17/72 Wichita show he raves about. It has great versions of Bird Song and Cumberland (2 of my favorite of theirs) as well as possibly my favorite Other One. Spectacular show. Of the 34 Dave's picks so far, it is one of my top 3 favorites along with 11/30/80 Fox Theater, and 11/17/73 Pauley Pavillion. The 74 Jai Alai show could be in my top 5, but I need a few more listens. I am so glad I stuck with the subscriptions over the years. http://www.agitators.com/gd/dick_1972.html Happy listening!
  14. Gillian Welch and David Rawlings just dropped a new album of covers including a really nice version of Hello in There. I can listen to the two of them play together all day.
  15. The new Dave’s Pick looks like a good one: Feel Like A Stranger, Cold Rain & Snow, Beat It On Down The Line, Cumberland Blues, Little Red Rooster, Brown Eyed Women, My Brother Esau, It Must Have Been The Roses, Let It Grow Scarlet Begonias-> Fire On The Mountain-> Samson & Delilah-> Drums-> I Need A Miracle-> Morning Dew-> Around & Around-> Johnny B. Goode, E: Day Job I mostly listen to official releases and 84 is a year I am pretty sure I do not own. The set list is right up my alley and the reviews on archive make it sound like a good one. I will have a tough time not checking it out before it arrives
  16. Listening to The Fall 79 Road Trips on Spotify for great versions of both Shakedown and Dancin (Brent is awesome on the segue into Franklin’s, and on the Shakedown-this version is #2 on Heady Version). Really like the Playin, Not Fade Away, and Wharf Rat too.
  17. I have a hard time choosing between Shakedown and the disco Dancing in the Streets for their best disco tune. Why not both?
  18. I am a nursing home pharmacist in Austin that serves a wide area around central Texas (I don’t actually work in the homes, thank god). Over the past week or so, a few of our homes have had big COVID outbreaks. Honestly, I am surprised it took this long. Oh yeah, we are also starting to run out of dexamethasone and it is now back ordered. I am guessing this won’t help our hospitalization numbers in Austin if the trend continues.
  19. Tonight Peloton is having a 45 min Grateful Dead ride-Workingman’s Dead I think. It will sure beat spinning to the crap music I normally work out to. This one will be on repeat. So excited.
  20. It might just be nostalgia because they were shows I fell in love with 20-25 years ago. The Bird Song and Cumberland on both shows are as good as the Dead get for me. The sound of the recordings is exactly how I prefer them. for me, 1 drummer Dead is the best. The last 6:30 of the Dark Star into the Cumberland on 9/27 is phenomenal. Right now I am just getting into the big hour plus jam from 11/14/73 (Truckin>Other One>Big River>O1>Eyes>O1>Wharf Rat. First time listening to it and it is delivering.
  21. Wish I heard it. I’d check heady version for something highly rated From whatever era it sounds like. Worst case you find another great version. i threw on 9/27/72 today. DiP 11. Don’t know why I haven’t listened to this in a while. The whole show is fire. Opens with a huge Morning Dew. Other highlights include top 3 versions (my ranking) of Bird song, Big River, and Cumberland (out of an amazing Dark Star). I really celebrate the whole show. Black-throated wind, Friend of the Devil, Attics of My life, Playin, Jed, Ramble on Rose, .............. Hard to decide if I prefer this show or the spectrum show from the 21st. Both are so good. I prefer both to any show from the earlier Europe tour.
  22. Saw this on the Facebook group Hate recommended.
  23. I am pretty sure that was me. I think I dropped it off on a porch on the west side somewhere. No worries. That was a pretty beautiful venue. The sunset while Willie was playing with them was gorgeous. Leavin Texas, Fourth day of July!!!!!
  24. They released the Moody Theatre show from January yesterday. It was the last live show I saw before everything shut down. it was a really good show. The Hawk is a Mule story and song were great, can’t wait to give it a listen. https://mandolinorange.bandcamp.com
  25. Checking in. Those 88 shows sound like a good place to start today. Both set lists look really solid. I’ve been on a Jerry solo kick. At least once a month I have to throw on Freedom Jazz Dance from Legion of Mary (GarciaLive 3). I had another version of this on an old tape and both versions are as good as the best shit the Dead ever did. Highly recommended! I also checked out GarciaLive 12 for the first time. It is Jerry and Merle from 73. I love their sound. It has some Texas girl singing with them I’ve never heard before. She improvised a lot of vocals. She can be a bit much, but over all it is pretty good and the band is on. The System>Honey Chile is a really nice 34 min jam with a long section that sounds like Mind Left Body jam. Also they do It’s a Sin, which is a jam in the 6/18/74 Other One-one of my favorites. Here is an interesting article about the vocalist Sarah Fulcher that is a good read. Lots of stuff about Jerry and the scene back then. Also, she later played in an all-girl proto-punk band called The Klitz. Great fucking band name! https://aquariumdrunkard.com/2019/12/17/blanks-and-postage-like-a-road-leading-home-the-elusive-sarah-fulcher-and-the-less-elusive-jerry-garcia/
