  1. Wow, I bet Gary Puckett approves of this song I had never seen this video and it is as fucked up as the other one. Holy hell what was wrong with people back then.
  2. I agree, that is what I wrote above. Thanks for confirming my point. Of course there was spread at the protests. They acknowledge the high probably in the paper. The headline makes it appear as if COVID spread did not occur to any measurable degree as a result of these huge crowds. That is a dangerous narrative to put out there. They looked at net cases in whole communities, not spread within distinct populations. They never tried to figure out if spread occurred within the population that was actively protesting. They put a narrative out there that insinuates the virus didn’t spread to a significant degree at these protests without actually presenting data of that. Then they buried the reasoning for the lack of spread deep in the article. That is starting with a conclusion and working backwards. It is factually correct and intellectually dishonest. I fear it will cost some lives as morons receive the message that large gatherings are fine. That same study and data could have been framed as social distancing works so well that it mitigated the spread that likely occurred during the protests. That would have been factually true based on the data they collected and would have been a far more helpful message to put out there. The virus isn’t woke. It didn’t decide to sit these gatherings out because Black Lives Matter (Narrator: They matter). Virus don’t give a fuck. That is all I’ve got on this subject.
  3. No, my conclusion is that people gathering in large groups spreads COVID and social distancing limits spread. In the conclusion of the paper they admit as much and play math games to show the cumulative spread in the country during the protests was balanced by these two activities. Take the time to read the conclusion in the article and not just the headline. Young people being in restaurants and bars is of course fueling the spread. Lots of people going from one large congregation (protests or Trump rallies) to another (restaurants and bars) in a period of a few weeks will surely fuel spread. It is simple logic. We are seeing the results of this now. And why should I need data on these gatherings to infer there was spread of COVID during them? We have over 6 months of literature showing this virus spreads when people gather. Acting like these specific mass gatherings were somehow immune to the spread we know occurs when groups gather is being a science denier. This virus spreads when people gather, period. The fact that the protests caused a lot of other people to increase their social distancing behavior during the same time period should not be used to claim the protests did not contribute to the spread of COVID. To me, that is allowing your viewpoint to cloud your judgement.
  4. Where did I say that? Anyone congregating is spreading it. I was commenting on this specific study and it’s conclusions, which I feel are misleading. The folks on the left are using this to say “see, it wasn’t us” and the folks on the right are using it to say “see, we can congregate with no ill effects.” Fuck them all. Stay home and wear a mask. Do your part as a person who cares about others to limit spread.
  5. That conclusion is bullshit. They say that the protests caused an increase in social distancing behavior among non-protesters that more than balanced out the non-social distancing behavior of the protesters. So even though the protesters were likely spreading it amongst themselves, everyone else in society being good caused the net effect to be zero. the study ignores all the subsequent spread of the virus that we are seeing now amongst the younger demographic that largely made up the protesters. isolating the spread to just what happened during the protests and not seeing what the effects are weeks later is irresponsible at best and willfully dishonest at worst. TLDR: Of course the protesters behavior spread the virus. Everyone else staying home made the net effect zero. Protesters spreading it to others in the weeks following is not factored in.
  6. I’ll throw that 87 stream on now while I study. I just saw a Weir post on FB that they are replaying all 3 Fare the Well shows on the 5th. https://relix.com/news/detail/fans-sets-marathon-broadcast-of-grateful-deads-fare-thee-well-run-at-soldier-field/ I bought the box set after it happened and have watched them from time to time. One of my favorite things in the set is the complete Circles Around the Sun setbreak music. Only about 2/3 of it are on Spotify and the rest is just as good. Neal Casal was amazing. RIP.
  7. Just started 6/18/83. Only AUD sources, but they are good. Great setlist and the comments from people who were at the show are a trip! Really enjoying Bird Song. i came across this artist page today. He has done a lot of GD stuff: http://scottmcdougall.net/grateful-dead-art
  8. Thanks! And the dark Star was 7/25/74. I just pulled up Relisten and saw I was wrong. Anyway it gets really good around 11:30 or so.
  9. It’s my birthday so I listened to 6/18/74 today at work. Great show. Along with what was mentioned above, the jam from WRS into the Other One into the jam into Stella is as good as it gets and the Morning Dew encore is easily in my top 3 versions. Also, agree on the To Lay Me Down from Miami. I have been listening to the new Dave’s Pick and that one really grabbed me. I also got my Dark Star fix with the 6/20 version and it did not disappoint. Tonight I put on 6/18/76 from the actual day I was born and that show smokes too. Time to study, so I think I’ll see if there are any other 6/18 shows of note.
  10. LAN rioja crianza (red label) is usually $13-15. It was recommended by Sam at Sunrise Minimart and is really good.
  11. The groove on this is so great. Also, much respect to Allen Toussaint (RIP) who wrote this.
  12. There are probably others, but the only one that comes to mind is 11/30/73 (dicks picks 14, along with 12/2/73). I remember when it was announced, Dick wrote that he loved that they opened this 3 night run with Morning Dew and also closed the run with it on 12/2 and that was one of the reasons for the pick. Pretty cool and both versions are really nice. i wish I could find the things Dick used to write when announcing his picks somewhere online. I still remember bits an pieces, but would love to go back and read those.
  13. I listened to the 6/10/73 show while at work today. Since I had to pause for phone calls and such, it took all day to get through the 4&1/2 hrs. What a great show. I will definitely need to go back to that one. I was a bit distracted, being at work, but the songs that jumped out at me were box of Rain and They Love Each Other. The Bird Song isn’t the best one I’ve heard, but it isn’t far off. The Playin and Eyes are both typically great as are all 73 versions (the eyes sounds so effortless as they go through the chord progressions and changes). The dark Star has some really nice spots and I love hearing Jerry and Dicky Betts trade leads in the third set. The jams have a different feel with the guests there and I really enjoyed it. Thanks for the recommendation!
  14. Great recommendations. The only one of those I’ve listened to all the way through is the 6/10 show but it has been a while. I do remember checking out the Help>slip>Frank from the 77 run and it is pretty epic. I will have to put those on while I study this week. Love me some 73 Dead!
  15. I made it through Wharf Rat last night-great version! I loved Phil’s playing on the Scarlet Fire and the jam at the end of Blow away is great. I thought it was interesting Jerry switched to a fender (Strat?) for space>Other One and then back to Tiger (?). I don’t know I’ve ever noticed this before. I love seeing that old stadium too. It reminds me of how old Soldier field looked when I saw them. what a great show!
  16. I just started the stream so I am a set behind. I am listening/watching as a I work on some stuff for school (I am going for a Masters and just found out I can graduate within the year if I bust my ass, woo hoo!). Love Iko Iko!
  17. I don’t think I’ve listened to that one. I will check it out as I have always loved that tune. I was lucky enough to see them open with it twice-at soldier field and in Vegas.
  18. I will definitely have to check out the stream of JFK this week (they have been leaving them up for the week). The show is on Spotify as Crimson, White, and Indigo if anyone wants to check out a great recording. And agreed, the Scarlet>Fire is bad ass.
  19. The 11/30/80 show is really good. It is known for having one of the best sounding AUD tapes out there. So good that they used it to make the only officially released matrix for Dave’s Picks 8. Great Stranger, Bird Song, Deal, and Scarlet>Fire amongst other things. for later shows, I love all three Alpine Valley 89 shows (all of summer 89 is great), the two fall 89 Warlocks shows at Hampton, and 9-10-91 (only show with Branford and Bruce).
  20. For Half-step, I really like 12/2/73 (Dick’s 14) for an earlier version and 9/3/77 (Dick’s 15) for a slightly later one (5/25/77 is also really good). I always liked the Copps one from Without a Net too. A few of my favorite shows on which every song is a great version for the whole show front to back are 9/21&27/72 (Dick’s 36 & 11), 11/17/72, 11/17/73, 2/24/74, and 11/30/80. I think most of these have a Bird Song as I tend to gravitate to shows with a good version. The Cumberland Blues from Dick’s 36 is one of my favorite things ever. For Eyes, the 6/16/74 version that segues into Big River might be my favorite. And the newest Dave’s pick (Jai Alai Fronton 74) is amazing. The bonus disk might be my favorite bonus disc of the series.
  21. Agreed. She is a really talented musician (singer and guitar) too. Good enough to have been a member of Prince’s New Power Generation band.
  22. I have the same thoughts about punishment when I think about the two pieces of shit that murdered my old suite mate from the Castillion: https://apnews.com/9463891eaae97c2654352cc7bfe1a89c He was a really nice guy who I knew pretty well that one year we lived next to each other. He never drank or partied and was working his ass off to become an amazing guitar player and architect and I have no doubt he would have accomplished both. i still remember a picture of his Volvo being towed out of Town lake on the cover of the Texan or Statesman from the day before I found out he was in it. It haunts me to think about going that way- being locked in a trunk and drowned with a complete stranger. I spotted his memorial Tree at the space center while on the bus tour with my kids a couple years ago. Fuck those guys that did it.
  23. I like that 6/18 show. For me, it is a cool one since I was born a couple hours before the show started. I’ve always really liked Mission in the Rain. It stayed in the JGB rotation even though the Dead quit playing it. I really like the version from the Don’t Let Go JGB release recorded about a month earlier. The whole show is great. Keith and Donna are in the band, I love John Kahn on bass, and the drummer is Ron Tutt from Elvis’ TCB band and later Neil Diamond’s band. They do great versions of Sugaree and TLEO and really everything else. The After Midnight is one of my favorite covers from any band ever. The find the perfect groove on it. It is worth a listen and is my favorite JGB release outside of the Legion of Mary stuff.
  24. The precision of the playing on composed songs peaked from 93 to 95. The group jamming from 97-2000 is so good it justifies the slight decrease in precision. For me their peak is 1995-2000. Up until the last few months, I had not gotten into 3.0 too much. I just wasn’t into many of the new songs or albums. For some reason, Ghosts of the Forest and Sigma Oasis both really resonate with me. The song writing feels more mature and I really like the feel of both from front to back. I like each of them more than anything they’ve put out in 20 years and have been listening to both a lot (I know Ghosts is a Trey Album, but Phish has been playing a bunch of the songs). Trey’s quarantine songs and videos have been really good too. I have been going back and listening to Some highly rated 3.0 shows and they are great, especially now that I “get” more of the more recent songs. It sounds like they are having fun and playing for the joy of it. They seem more locked in on newer material and if you aren’t into that, then I can see why you’d be down on 3.0, as I was. Golden Age is such a great cover I’ve just discovered and the 10/28/16 version is fantastic. And I also agree, when they play some older composed songs, it is nowhere near as tight as it should be and it does bother me (heard a Golgi on Phish Radio from fall tour that made me sad).
  25. Just started listening to a newish dead podcast called 36 from the Vault. They are going through the Dick’s picks series. I listened to the first two and am going to listen to Vol 3 before listening to the third one. It is pretty good, the hosts are both pretty successful music critics who are big fans. In first episode, my biggest discovery is how good the He’s Gone is on Vol 1. Keith’s playing is great. I hadn’t really listened to it in years as I usually stick to disc 1. Also, I never knew there is a 4 minute bass solo that Phil insisted be cut from the first Jam after Truckin for it to be released.
