  1. Yes, exactly, I've seen to word "fortifications" used over the past couple weeks. Having read a couple of weeks ago that the native oak trees help slow or resist fire, I'll be especially interested to learn the impact of non-native vegetation and whether there's any related recommended policy changes.
  2. It's a meme of a variety that the religious wingnuts post at every available opportunity. Pure propaganda.
  3. I think analysis of the various public policy decisions that led to this point will be quite interesting, which is why I posted what I thought was a pretty fair article. As someone whose family and friends lost their houses in the Palisades fire, my antenna were raised to any bs. I also provided what I thought was a very neutral description. I'm skeptical of NIMBYs in as general a sense that can possibly be framed though so perhaps I missed seeing a bias that you see. If anything it seems like less density and more fire breaks would have only increased the price of housing in that area, while also cutting against public support for additional infrastructure.
  4. This LAT article from today discusses that the lack of larger water pipes and tanks in the Malibu/Palisades area came down to, at least in part, NIMBY politics trying to stop housing growth. Even if the tanks and pipes had been upgraded it's unknown how many houses could've saved but there seems to be a consensus it would have been a few, at most. https://proreader.io/search?url=https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2025-01-24/malibu-water-capacity-upgrades-palisades-fire
  5. dumb question amnesty - I'm having the same issues with bluesky video that I had with xitter - clicking play opens another window and I have to watch the video on that site. Is that a setting in my browser or just the way it is?
  6. Weird how the one government overstep they care about is some dipshit white dude with lousy opsec who tried to hire hitmen and created a marketplace to sell crystal meth, child porn and illegal weapons. I wonder what it is that made him "special."
  7. Endorsing a neo-nazi party in Germany. Turning twitter in a racist cesspool filed with actual nazis and twitter-created ai nazis. Reinstating and then boosting the most vile white supremacists in the world. Promoting the Great Replacement Theory. It's all just a huge joke. Very funny. Just a huge troll.
  8. If we were on txags: You just bought yourself a week off, fella. Banning is not a laughing matter! - Billy Liucci.
  9. More than 50 subreddits went through with banning links from X today, reaching more than 40 million combined members. https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/social-media/50-reddit-communities-ban-x-links-protest-musk-rcna188719
  10. Hey dipshit that was 1933. Maybe it's time you learn what the white supremacists are up to in 2025.
  11. Giving a nazi site clicks or not giving it clicks is political, no matter the choice. You're blaming the victim.
  12. The fact that you're quoting crypto bro nonsense says much about your delusions and motivations. I'll put you on ignore now.
  13. Why are you okay with normalizing and sanitizing white supremacist propaganda? Why do you think this site should support it?
  14. We can agree that being a nazi in 2025 is different from being one in 1933 but if I "slipped up" and gave an extremely emphatic nazi salute -- twice -- at a presidential inauguration, I'd at the very least apologize and explain myself. I have no response to the remainder of your garbled, delusional ranting.
  15. It's not about voting differently. That's a straw man argument.
  16. THANK YOU, @immamac I saw where a large amount of reddit subs were also banning xitter embeds and I wondered if that would fly over here. Grateful to see you're trying it.
  17. UT is clearly better off when paying athletes is legal, widely accepted and above-board. But having a random billionaire control the fate of the school's athletics program seems far from ideal.
  18. They also aired some live boxing bullshit in December that a lot of people watched for unknown reasons. I canceled netflix awhile back...I'm struggling to remember the last show we watched before cancelling and I asked the wife but she doesn't recall either. I just browsed their list of current top shows, and I'd guess The Diplomat S1 was the last one. I sign up for Hulu + live during the cfb season but there's not much worthwhile to watch there IMO. We're set for the year with apple tv+ due to their freebie offer through Best Buy - 3 months free, even if you've been a subscriber before, all you need to do is purchase the least expensive item they offer. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/apple-free-apple-tv-for-3-months-new-or-qualified-returning-subscribers-only/6484512.p?skuId=6484512
  19. We just returned from Barcelona. Incredible city. Awesome place to visit in January - nothing was too crowded and the weather in mid January ranged from pleasant and sunny to manageable. I'm a bit ashamed that it was my first trip there and that I had no idea it was so awesome. With all the dedicated pedestrian pathways it may be the best city in the world to walk 25000 steps a day. We stayed in the Gothic Quarter for 5 nights. I'd branch out to a less touristy district next time but it certainly was convenient. Sagrada Familia and Palau de Musica Catalana were the highlights. We snagged tickets to a pianist concert and had an amazing time. The acoustics are incredible in the beautiful art deco building, which dates from the early 1900s. Restaurant recommendations - A friend strongly recommended Teoric Taverna and we had an awesome experience. The concept is apparently to keep the prices reasonable while serving a "Michelin style" menu. The only choices you'll need to make are between the 10 course tasting menu or the 13 course. I disdain long, drawn out meals but they kept things moving and we were out of there after about 2 hours. The 13 course menu was only 62 euro pp, definitely a great value. Shrimp tartar served on a fried chicken skin cracker was off-the-hook great, as was the venison. Reservations needed. El Nacional - Four distinct restaurants under the same roof, each with a different style of Spanish cuisine. Plus there's a couple of tapas bars. We had an amazing lunch at the beef-centric eaterie. We didn't need a reservation for lunch in January but ymmv. Bar La Plata - the concierge rec'd this place for tapas and it's great. From reading internet comments afterwards, some complain it's too pricey. It's not cheap but the quality is definitely there. It's a local's type of hangout and a very authentic, fun place to hang out and eat and drink. Their patatas bravas, the pig trotters with foie gras, grilled artichoke stuffe d with romesco sauce, and the flan were among the outstanding dishes. Even their tomato toast was the best we were served during our stay in BCN. Also worth a mention is the new Time Out restaurant location. Apparently the concept was so successful in Lisbon they branched out a few months ago to a handful of different cities. The location in Barcelona is by the marina so not that easy to drop into but a pleasant walk from the Gothic Quarter.
  20. Honestly I've wondered why he brught them up. I assume it's part of some conspiracy theory about how the gov't is going to prevent people from rebuilding but why it came up, I have zero idea.
  21. False. They work temporarily but they only increase erosion, increase the ferocity of the tide, and only result in greater destruction long-term. There are several studies about it and if you think you can just build a wall to stop the rising tide of the ocean, think again.
