Gilbert was a 5 star the high school player of the year and a guy literally everyone would have gladly inked. It clearly didn’t go well but it wasn’t a recruiting miss. Changing the offense was terminally stupid.

Yeah, that was the year Texas wanted one of Gilbert or Russell Shepard.  Neither had a great career at QB in college.  Shepard did play several years in the NFL as a WR and Gilbert does have a Super Bowl ring.

This will probably end up working out for OU because it always does but this is about as good as we could have hoped.  Assuming he gets Lebby or Harrell, both of those guys want a HC job and were in the mix for decent options this year.  So even if they are remotely successful they will be leave and OU will start from scratch the next year.  We'll see if he can build a successful defense but they should not be able to recruit/retain the offensive firepower that Lincoln could

Is Harrell still a hot commodity?  I haven't heard his named mentioned since he turned down Texas.

Ewers is important like Simms was important for Mack. It was perception and the ability to influence other recruits. Simms signing to Texas instantly raised the perception of Texas among recruits. Barbers recently talked about that. Ewers may end up being mediocre, but if he comes to Texas it will instantly change the perception of the program.

Agreed.   Texas needs one of Ewers or Manning.

To be successful at Miami, they know you gotta lock up that south Florida recruiting area. They tried Manny for that very reason and it didn't work. Mario seems like a step up for the same formula. Seems like a perfect fit to me. Pretty sure he's also Cuban for whatever that's worth.

The landscape in Florida recruiting has changed dramatically over the past 20 years.  It used to be just three schools competing for talent but schools like UCF are now taking some of that talent.   I think he can do well there but it will be harder than in the past.

Quick note on what’s going on behind the scenes

Just spoke to a source with inside knowledge, and that source indicated to me that there’s indeed been an effort from within to throw the dogs off the trail. Here’s the skinny.

I asked about the timeline I was given yesterday that referenced the basketball game as a possible juncture for the announcement, and as it would turn out, admin did indeed tell members of OU’s internal media team to prepare for that as well. But that time frame obviously came and passed with nary a rustle.

I’m now told that internal media personnel have been given a short list of names, and they’ve been instructed to prepare graphics and other elements for each of the names on that list. The source I spoke with couldn’t disclose the full list to me, but I can tell you that one of the names on it is Dabo Swinney. To be very clear here, I do NOT expect that Swinney is your next OU head coach, but it seems that even within the building, his name is indeed being thrown around in the chicanery.

For everyone’s sake, I’m going to hold off on sharing the sum of everything I was told over the last few days regarding Brent Venables. Suffice it to say there is a reason why people like Chris Plank and Teddy Lehman, who obviously have roles within the OU athletic department, publicly echoed the sentiment that Venables appeared to be the guy. There’s a reason I said I’d be shocked if the hire wasn’t BV. But I want to see how this all plays out before I expound any further.

In conclusion, there is a growing belief — as Brandon mentioned earlier — that this job could belong to Dan Lanning when all is said and done. I’ll add that the source with whom I spoke agreed with that assessment. If that is the case and BV isn’t the guy, just know here and now that the subterfuge in this ordeal ran insanely deep. But I’ll be able to share more on that whenever the hire is announced.

This whole Dabo stuff seems like a mole hunt within the OU athletic department.
