As most of you know, Texas high school playoffs are currently ongoing. And in the various divisions (6a, 5a, 4a etc etc) all the the districts send their top 4 teams - regardless of w/l record - top 4 are in. This is based on district results only, non district games matter not. And then the first round begins with all the 1’s facing off against the 4’s and likewise all the 2’s and 3’s I like this. I’m wondering if perhaps it could work for the CFP. Conference championship games have no bearing other than to name the 1 seeds. Now I know what you are thinking, why even play the CCGs? We’ll let me tell you… SEC Top 4 Bama, UGA, Miss, Aggy BIG Top 4 tOSU, Indy, UO, SC Big12 Top 2 - yeah, I said 2 Tech, BYU ACC Top 2 Virginia, Duke That’s 12 teams so we have 4 spots to fill and we’re gonna do that on CCG weekend. G5s need to have their champs already decided prior to this weekend - hey, if they want in, that’s the requirement. Top ranked G5 + 7 at-large play for the final 4 bids - all four of which will then fill in 3 and 4 seeds in the BIG12 and ACC spots in CFP bracket Using the AP poll, the seven at large this year would be: (8)OU, (9)ND, (10)Bama, (11)BYU, (12)Miami, (13)Vandy, (14)Texas Thanks to SC getting the 4 seed out of the BIG, Utah is 1st team out Match-ups would be: OU - G5 ND - Texas Bama - Vandy BYU - Miami

Yeah, CCG loser need a way back into the bracket vs the at-large teams

Apologies for quoting myself but here’s Tech’s season total: 50 Ark PB 50 Kent St 50 Oregon St 100 Utah (15) 100 Houston (21) 50 Kansas -100 Az St 50 Ok St 50 K St 100 BYU (11) (should be 10) 50 UCF 50 WV ______ 600

I saw a reel come across my feed yesterday where some guy applied point value for wins and losses and came up with a season total. I can’t find the link but his formula was something like this: +50 pts - non top25 win +100 - top25 win +25 - top10 win +10 - top5 win -100 - non top25 loss -50 - top25 loss -35 - top10 loss -25 - top5 loss Top25 rankings were based on current end of season rankings, not time of game rankings Add up team totals and seed a playoff accordingly

But can you do it that way alone? I don't think you can. 18 and 20 team conferences really have no way to do that.

I like Gruden’s plan. But it doesn’t solve the unequal scheduling problem. Only a massive reconfiguring will do that.

Holy shit you dipshits: 9-3 Texas is probably in the playoffs

Have you ever heard of BYU? They play in a “P4” conference and won 11 games and they aren’t in the playoff. If Texas played their schedule and had the same results, Texas would be Top5 right now. -
Ok. How ‘bout this. I too agree about CCGs meaning something so instead of 8 champs plus 8 at-large… - 8 champs get byes - 8 CCG losers play 8 at-large
-
If there was a complete overhaul and do-over would not the $$ still be a part of it. Not sure I agree that money would be lost by the current members of BIG SEC

I started to post this in one of the existing threads but thought I’d go this route to shift the focus from “what’s wrong” to “what it could be”. I liked Gruden’s idea of more play-in games on CCG Saturday but I don’t think it goes far enough as a long term fix. So, here goes… The Super Bowl pits the AFC champ vs the NFC champ - doesn’t matter if the 2 or 3 or 7 best teams are all on one side or the other - the Super Bowl will always be AFC vs NFC. Fast forward to a new college football playoff landscape, what’s your preferred format? I know there are some that want this but is there really a majority that would want it to be BIG vs SEC all the time and all the time BIG vs SEC? Like AFC vs NFC? My fandom doesn’t stem from following a blue blood program - I went to high school in Lubbock (college ACU) but I still live in Lubbock and therefore I support and follow Texas Tech. But I was born in Los Angeles and didn’t move to Texas until I was 15. The blue bloods were all I ever knew as they were the teams always on TV and playing in the bowl games on New Years Day (the majority of my early college football viewing) So I’m an outsider regarding blue bloods but I understand their perspective of not wanting to share that which they have built. But is that really what’s best for the future of the game? I’m curious if you Longhorns truly want that sort of contraction? I’m open to hear your pros and cons for going that route. As for me and my personal non blue blood perspective and fandom, I always enjoyed the regionality of the SWC - wish Arkansas never left. When we moved to Texas, I hadn’t heard of Texas Tech but I knew about Texas and Arkansas and Oklahoma - and Aggy because of the movie “Best Little Whorehouse In Texas” - lol But I REALLY liked the original Big12 - save for screwing up the OU/NU game. And I would like to see a return to something similar to those affiliations - doesn’t have to be exact but close. The scarcity of teams out west make if difficult to do with a good and equal distribution of program size and strength. But I believe it’s worth pursuing. If nothing else, the transfer portal and NIL age has shown us who’s committed and who isn’t (so far) - so maybe that’s a starting point on where the cut line should be. Texas Tech and BYU have made it known with their recent contracts that they are committed. With that being said, here’s my wish list: Eight conferences of 9 teams (8x9=72) Playoffs are the 8 champs and 8 at-large based on w/l record - regular season is 8 conf game + 4 (max of 2 vs teams outside the 72) I don’t want to list my entire 72 here now but I would like to see these traditional rivals stay together as group “starter kits” if you will for the 8 leagues - SC, UCLA, UO, UW - NU, OU, TX, ATM - UI, UM, tOSU, PSU - UA, AU, LSU, UGA - UF, FSU, UM - ND, AF, Army, Navy I guess that’s all I got, the rest can be filled in. As for my preference for Tech, Lubbock is already pretty remote so besides the Dallas area, regionality doesn’t exist. So, the only one I’d for sure like to be back in the same conference with is Nebraska - I guess that eliminates Texas from consideration - lol Cheers!!

I don’t think this is getting enough love The matchups can all be debated. But the concept of “why do all the top seeds have to play an extra game?” asks a question that makes a ton of sense -
Their resume is CURRENTLY better than ND. ESPN willingly left that info off their chart last night tOSU/Indy - both teams in win or lose UGA/Bama - both teams in win or lose Tech - in win or lose BYU - we like ND better so play an extra game to improve your already superior resume to prove your worth to us
-
Right. That’s exactly right. Blatantly corrupt but accurate. Nevermind that their resume is better than 2 of the 3 teams featured on said graph
-
I think we all know why ESPN left BYU off their graph last night
-
I wouldn’t like that one team would be playing in a CCG and two wouldn’t but a debate between BYU, Miami, and Texas for the final spot would be more honest than just giving it to ND
