  1. Wild one. Two teams with major individual talent who can get their shots pretty much whenever. After last year it doesn't bother me to see NC State take a seat, though I never want to see Mulkey succeed. Of course, because I really only care about Texas, the other games' results are moot to me if we don't get it done today. The Vols aren't to be taken lightly, especially if they dial in from 3 early and Booker's so aggressive on D that she gets a couple quick fouls. We'd better keep pounding it inside and being efficient. With one obvious exception (hi, Dookies), it will take 70-plus points to beat anyone at this point of the tournament.
  2. You never know what will turn out to define your season. But this game might. We'll see.
  3. At least we're coming up with creative ways to almost be clutch. Not impressed with much of anything we've been doing lately.
  4. Nice to see Mia come to life. Let's hope it's a start. This lethargy in games that actually matter is becoming an ugly habit. Goes back to the miracle rally against Auburn. High time for somebody to read the riot act.
  5. This team is really missing Martinez and Dayton, for multiple reasons. Who out there is going to be a leader?
  6. As feared, just too little offense. Not that turning two errors into MSU runs helped us, either. Time to put on those big-girl pants.
  7. Not understanding the throw to 2B there. Giving up a run for no reason. That's the sort of mistake our weaker opponents make.
  8. Not looking for any offensive records to be set in this one. Guess we'll see how many total innings Chafin and Kavan have to go over the weekend.
  9. Gasso said afterwards that they'd been focusing on this weekend's series against Tennessee, and it showed. Most runs allowed by OU in 5 seasons. We all know they don't have a lockdown staff any more, but this was an especially bad showing. On the other side, WSU pitching was awful. But the hosts also played no semblance of D. It really was Keystone Cops out there. Of course, you might expect that of a .500 team.
  10. Wow. Those two staffs served up more meat than a Brazilian steakhouse.
  11. OU 19-16 final...of course. But I like our chances against that staff.
  12. UCLA and some other solid programs courted Shaka at VCU and were rebuffed. Or so it was reported. In that scenario, it's easy to see an image guy like Patterson pulling out all the stops to be the successful suitor and then thinking he'd indeed snagged the homecoming queen. The Smarts checking out Austin and quickly proclaiming it culturally enlightened enough for them meshed well with our former AD's focus on appearances over coaching ability. It's just a shame Shaka didn't take one of those other gigs before Texas hired him. I don't know if he'd have been better off, but there's a good chance we would have.
  13. I'm still a Carlton fan, because I think she has it in her. But we'll see if she turns up the intensity before next season. If not, she needs to go "All Gas(ton), No Brakes" to a program less demanding. Winning in the SEC is a grown woman's game.
  14. Games like this make me wonder where we really are as a pitching staff.
  15. Xavier knows Miller better than most, having employed him for years and then having lost him once before. Any "betrayal" they feel thus shouldn't have come as a shock. And never mind that Xavier rehired him after his messy dismissal at Arizona, so they didn't look so good then, either. I know his latest Xavier stint is being spun as a "second chance," but I'm guessing they wouldn't have been that forgiving of a lesser coach.
  16. Hate to say it, but I suspect OU will be a legit threat. They're already around Top 15 level, not way below us in a general sense. With the way the game is ramping up in terms of scoring and pace, even without Chavez they're no pushover. I certainly doubt they'll beat UConn, but if they do I give them more than a puncher's chance against the KSU-USC winner. Already looking forward to the battles between Chavez and Preston/Harmon.
  17. As Vic's been forced to run it this year, I certainly share that view at times. For a blueblood, we've far too often had to really work to get points against ordinary opponents, and when we score it's rarely Top 10 highlights material that might excite a flamboyant prospect. It's clear our better players really love their coaches and teammates, and we're obviously winning. So it's not a culture problem — merely style of play. Contrast this to OU's ladies having a blast raining 3s and zigzagging all over the open court. They certainly appear to be having more fun than we are out there, even if they aren't. Oh, and let's not overlook the possibility that the ultimate alpha might not want to be one of two 5-star Aaliyah C's in the same class on the same team. Not saying that should matter, but not saying it doesn't. Hope we get great news today, but if we do, I'll be surprised.
  18. Vivi at SS and Goode at 2B was as ideal a scenario as we could have had. All of these ladies can play, so that's no slam on Bennett or even Goode. But in the meat grinder of the SEC and then hopefully OKC, you of course need your best lineup on the field every day. How this has rippled into affecting our pitchers I don't quite know. If still in the B12, comparisons would be simpler. But as we dive into the SEC, it could be that MM or CG pitches we saw getting dribbled by Baylor or Tech are going to be hit hard more often no matter how we defend. I'd still like to see Simpson out there a couple more times late in runaways, just to see if she still has anything at all. Clearly she's not going to be great, but easing the load on some other pitchers would have to help.
  19. Watching this tournament, and looking at our recent history, think it's clear Vic needs to tweak his offensive strategy/style whether AC comes to Austin or not. We have so many games where we're rather stiffly grinding it out against lesser foes. Meanwhile, some really athletic rivals are freewheeling their way to 40-point blowout wins. We all love lockdown D, but to appeal to the kind of athletes it takes to match some of these teams, I see Texas needing to start scoring 85 instead of 65.
  20. The more I watch OU's offensive pace and style vs. ours, the more I wring my hands over what Chavez will do tomorrow. Make me laugh about this post, girl.
  21. I agree. Unfortunately, our shooting woes aren't always due to facing good D.
  22. Our D really got it done in that second quarter. Illinois being short on dynamic players obviously helps, but we were solid for 94 feet. We'll need to shoot better against Tennessee, but let's get through this one uninjured first. .
  23. It's pretty much the difference in winning a title or falling short. Which is why I've tried to temper my expectations this year. Would love to see it turn out differently, of course.
  24. If you're not going to ignore the worst posters, please at least stop quoting their nonsensical blather.
  25. Miller's a big upgrade in terms of resume, playing style and ability to fill the gym. I'll also take my chances with him as a recruiter, especially at Texas. Had he been our coach this year, even with the Mark and Weaver injuries we'd have been a much more complete team. The list of guys better than him is shorter than many fans assume.
