  1. I don't think you're going to get an answer from him...
  2. it was a picture of Jake Ehlinger.
  3. Dude, just shut the fuck up before this turns into a fatwa. You’re a fucking idiot. This is a dumb hill to die on.
  4. Designated free speech zones are often established at events that are likely to attract protesters exercising their rights to peaceable assembly. The interest of public safety has to be weighed against protecting rights of free speech. The West Mall is on actual Government property, so I'm not sure that they can restrict speech to only one specific area on the West Mall. But again, protesters/crowds cannot assemble in a way that compromises the safety and autonomy of others. There are limits to how one engages in free speech, protests, right to assemble, etc. The First Amendment does not protect anarchy.
  5. You really, REALLY don't understand the First Amendment.
  6. Maybe look at Oak Park? It boarders the Western edge of Chicago. I think it has pretty decent schools? Can't say for sure. It definitely feels like you're living "in Chicago". But there are some dicey neighborhoods on the other side of the city limits in Chicago. If I still lived in Chicago it's proximity to those neighborhoods wouldn't deter me and it's probably where I would look at living if we were to move back. There's a Chicago-specific thread with detailed restaurant recommendations.
  7. There's not much of a difference between those neighborhoods. They're all full of rich white people (except for Naija in the West Loop). Not that there's anything wrong with that. But you're right in that a lot of neighborhoods have their own identities. The further away you go from downtown and the neighborhoods immediately surrounding the area, the more pronounced those differences are. What's your agenda, closetohumping? How old are your kids? Are you wanting to check out family-friendly cultural shit? Where are y'all staying?
  8. I bet that would be good with stouts, porters, or dopplebocks too.
  9. 1) Traces of Texas is Hornius Emeritus' very VERY excellent Insta handle. 2) There's nothing pretentious about it at all. It's just awesome photos/stories of the things that make Texas the great state that it is. 3) Even though it's not at all pretentious, we're talking about cocktails culture, which is inherently pretentious, so even if it were, it'd fit right in. 4) You know what is lame and pretentious? Offering an unsolicited and unnecessarily aggro opinion on a subject/drink on which you're completely uninformed. 5) Maybe go ahead and get fucked?
  10. I mean, my concern is that I do think it's a possibility. Regardless of how much I've already had to drink this morning. But it should be obvious to everyone that if we suck with Ewers, we can blame it on either the shit OL we already have, the new "all freshman" shit OL (necessitated by the shit OL we already have), QE being a freshman(ish), the defense sucking shit through a straw, etc. At least there's something to sell there. If we suck with Card, then there's nothing to sell because we all knew he sucked. It should be obvious. But again, this is our concern, dude. I think the point is, either way, we're probably going to suck.
  11. I finally watched "the Florida Project" on Netflix. It's disappearing in like 5 days. The more I think about it, the more I like it. At first I hated the ending, but I think I understand the choice the director made after I had a chance to sleep on it. I highly recommend it. But fuck, generational poverty is a bitch. The only unrealistic thing about the movie was the quality of the deadbeat mom's tattoos. They would not have been that well done. And they're not even that great.
  12. Tarp thinks scouts bringing their own stop watches to A&M's pro day to verify the info put out by the school is some grand conspiracy against A&M. They do this everywhere, ya fucking jabroni. Scouts know that every school has an inherent bias for their own players, and an incentive to produce the best stats/times for their players and improve their potential draft stock.
  13. Also, the grass in my backyard was dead yesterday and now it's green and has probably grown two inches in four hours.
  14. In Longview Park in South Austin there is an old cemetery for the "Bargsley Family" that is surrounded by a tall chain link fence. It's curious because the death date of the mother and the daughter are May 4, 1922. The Bargsley family accounted for six of the 13 casualties caused by the tornado in the picture above. Here's an article: https://www.austin360.com/story/entertainment/local/2015/08/29/the-mystery-of-the-bargsley-family-plot/10212548007/ One of the quotes in the article speaks to what phdhorn said upthread w/r/t how fortunate we are that the storms didn't manifest 15-20 miles further west, potentially running through downtown or some of the more populated areas in the metro. Anyway, this is your tidbit of austin tornado history for the day.
  15. probably bullshit. I have zero faith in offseason sunshine pumping of any sort. show me on the field.
  16. In this case, I thought the baggage and the talent were about equal. I also thought teams would be scared away by a potentially long suspension coming his way, as he held out last season and was not on the commissioner's exemption list. So technically he hasn't even been disciplined by the league yet. The League was waiting to see what happened in the criminal courts before making any determinations on how they would discipline Watson. Now that he's not been indicted on the criminal side, maybe they choose not to suspend him. But they suspended Zeke four games for grabbin' a tittie. Maybe they drop the hammer on Watson. Who knows. And while he was not indicted on criminal charges, he has not settled any of the civil suits, has sat for four depositions, and has 18 more depositions. I don't understand why he doesn't just settle the damn cases and say "While I am innocent of the accusations, it's in the best interest of my family, my teammates, and the Texans (or whoever he gets traded to) to settle these cases so that I can focus on my career and winning football games."
  17. Well, I'm an idiot. I said no one would give up a first for a guy with his baggage. Can't believe anyone would give up what's being floated around for this dude. Mea Culpa. Wow.
  18. Trees aren't budding. No wildflowers when typically they're typically bursting this time of year. Looks like a strong chance of rain on Monday. We really, really need it.

    Tacos

I think the carnitas taco at the Un Mundo de Sabor food truck is in my top-5 tacos in Austin. At most places when you get carnitas and it's either soft and greasy with the texture of barbacoa, or it's dry and chewy because it was over cooked. The carnitas here are perfectly crispy and tender. They're in the Thicket food trailer park in South Austin. The whole menu is great. I typically get a carnitas taco, an al pastor taco, and a campechano. My wife likes the enchiladas rojas. I've had the beef flautas and they were also really good. Limited menu but the guy running it has is a magician. Check them out. Pics stolen from yelp. Here's the carnitas taco Carnitas and Campechano: Enchiladas Rojas:
  20. KD left way too much time on the clock. And Dinwiddie is a fucking assassin. Can’t believe how well this trade has worked out.
  21. I will fucking rage if Dirty's closes. I don't think it's going to happen. I think they'll designate the building a historical landmark or something. But regarding timing, I can't see it happening imminently. Probably take 6 months or longer. Dirty's and Crown are my favorite North Campus burgers. I like Posse for game watching and beer drinking. Their nacho's will do in a pinch. But if I'm hungry I'm probably walking down to Crown for a burger.
