I used to be a Republican. Voted for Republicans all my life until 2016. I did not vote for Trump (or Hillary) in 2016. In 2020 I voted for Biden. I figured Trump might be a wildcard, but I was sure the Republican senate would keep him in line. I began to get somewhat concerned when Trump began firing members of his cabinet, when they expressed a differing opinion from the President. That is not a healthy democracy. The politicization of pretty much everything (federal aid, corona, etc) and the perceived loss of the autonomy of the Justice Department, and the divisive rhetoric was a bridge too far and pretty much ensured he would not be getting my vote in 2020. I once considered Republicans the party of "morality". But it was the Senate Republicans who sat on their hands and did nothing when Trump attacked the election (before it even happened), pretty much pushed me away from the party completely. And I can't see myself going back any time soon. I truly don't understand how Republicans can hold their nose and vote for such a morally bankrupt man. The electoral process and the peaceful transfer of power are the foundation of our democracy, and the erosion of them for a TV reality show star, is absolutely disgusting.
I am a veteran, briefly a LEO, now an IT professional. I don't think all BLM protestors are "looters". I don't think all Trump supporters are Q-Anon loonies. I condemn the assault on the capital building, and I condemn the looting and property destruction during the protests this summer. I absolutely support the right of the people to assemble outside the capitol to protest. And the right to assemble in Lafayette park to protest racial injustice. I support law enforcement, but I do believe there is institutional racism in the criminal justice system. I am a gun owner, but don't think firearms have any place at protests. I believe in a woman's right to choice. The world is not a black and white place.
