  1. He's one made one hire for football at Tech (prior to Wells), and it was a guy that just about every Tech fan wanted. I wouldn't say that's failing miserably.
  2. Not exactly. Kliff was young and hungry, but also raw as hell, and even his most enthusiastic proponents admitted that had a to learn a lot on the job. Wells has already been a head coach for 6 years. (EDIT: El Diablo more or less said all this, but it bears repeating.)
  3. I always forget what an asshole he is. That look on his face when Lewis got the pick was priceless.
  4. I don't have any choice in who we hire.
  5. They were 3rd in FBS scoring offense this year.
  6. He's not Sterlin Gilbert. You really think he's going to be in any less demand if Helton gets fired?
  7. That's good news. It's a good job for Kliff, and I was really hoping he'd go somewhere far away from the Big 12.
  8. I think the Rhule comparison is pretty apt. I hope Wells - if he gets hired, since that hasn't happened yet - is as successful. Sometimes the AD needs to make the best choice he can based on his research and interviews, and then just put that person in a position to succeed. Bowing to popular opinion is what got us Kliff.
  9. It's nice to see at least one person talking sense on this thread.
  10. Yeah, most Tech people are disappointed. That doesn't mean he can't win in Lubbock.
  11. We just fired a former Tech QB. I'm not sure having Tech ties was as an important a factor in this job search as you seem to think.
  12. OK. I'll wait and see what happens on the field.
  13. I guess the mood of Tech fans now is I want to "Rock with You" whilst curled up in the fetal position.
  14. That's the word on the street. I'm pretty sure having a high scoring spread offense was one of the basic requirements for anyone Hocutt would interview.
  15. I guess this is what it's like to be an aggy, and I don't say that because I'm convinced Wells would be a bad hire.
  16. Already covered, but anyway, Hellraiser97 has implicitly defined McWilliams's short tenure at Tech as sub-"really successful".
  17. There's some truth to this, but Kliff was at Tech for six years and had a losing record 4 out of the last 5. He ran out of excuses.
  18. David McWilliams was 7-4 in his one year at Tech, so I guess he's not an example of a good coach that got hired away?
  19. Right, he's the one, and that was, what?, 32 years ago? He was also a former UT player.
  20. It's not that big of a rebuild, though. The big question is whether Alan Bowman can get healthy and stay healthy. If he can, we'll have a winning team. The overall talent level is not that bad.
  21. Yeah, I think people were excited by the prospect, but I can't say I've come across anyone who really thought it was going to happen.
  22. That's not what I asked. Can you name a coach Tech wanted to keep that a "bigger" program hired away? Considering how often people say "if he's successful at Tech, he'll be gone in a few years anyway", you would think it must've happened before.
  23. Please cite the last time a good coach was hired away from Tech.
  24. People weren't particularly hyped about Leach when he started, and even after his first year (where we won 7 games and lost our bowl game), it was "that wasn't any better than Spike, and at least Spike was funny". Wells could certainly crash and burn, but if he wins games, it'll all be forgotten, as always with hires like this. I predict a lot of whining between now and the start of Big 12 play next year, though.
  25. Not to downplay what happened with Leach, but which other successful coaches has Tech pushed out?
