  1. What a fascinating match. The humidity got to Monfils and he looked like he'd be done in four sets, but they closed the roof for rain and that helped him. Berrettini had major lemon booty serving for the match in the fifth and gagged it away but rallied in the tiebreak. Nadal is the only player left in the men's draw who can keep a player born in the 1990s from winning a grand slam for the first time.
  2. Berrettini has yet to show he can be competitive on Monfils serve which is going to make winning difficult. He won 5 points on Monfils serve in the first set.
  3. Big Berrettini guy by which I mean I watched him play in person randomly so I'm rooting for him.
  4. Acuna is hitting .152 with a .555 OPS since stinker benched him.
  5. Dest starting for Ajax in a Champions League qualifier
  6. Roger seems fine in the second set. Just feeling charitable in these first sets.
  7. He's undoubtedly a lunatic. I would argue that while the yelling at fans and umpires is unseemly, I think ultimately it's mostly harmless. Sure the fan or the umpire may feel shitty in the short term, but nobody is going to be siding with the rantings of a crazy person as opposed to, say, Serena when she berates a chair umpire during the entirety of the US Open Final. The one time Kyrgios undoubtedly crossed the line was with the "Kokkinakis banged your girlfriend" thing with Wawrinka. He took a private matter between consenting adults and made it very public during a match. It wasn't fair to de-facto slut shame Donna Vekic like that and it wasn't fair to do that to Kokkinakis, someone who was supposedly his friend. Otherwise though, I just think he's so absurd it's hard to be offended. I mean, the man called a chair umpire a "potato with arms and legs" and I'm sorry, but that's HILARIOUS.
  8. Good news: MLS Cup to air on network television. Very bad: MLS Cup to begin during the NFL 1pm game "witching hour" and continue through the beginning of a nationally televised Rams-Steelers game. https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2019/08/28/2019-mls-cup-air-live-abc-and-univision
  9. Berhalter said he didn't call up Bradley, Jozy and Omar Gonzalez because Toronto FC is chasing a playoff spot.
  10. I really enjoy tennis, but am not a die hard fan and prescribe to the "sports should be fun" lifestyle so I love Kyrgios because he's such an ass clown. His talent is undeniable. His path to the semis is Hoang, Rublev/Simon, Berrettini, and then Monfils is the best seed in the bottom portion of that quadrant. Not sure a bracket is ever going to set up better for him to make a grand slam semifinal. He'll fuck it up some how.
  11. Not gonna lie, it's always been a life dream of mine to buy an English football team, run it into the ground and have people shout "(ATLLonghorn) Out!" at me.
  12. I'm extremely happy for Miles Robinson. He spent two years in Atlanta working and getting little playing time or spending time in the USL before de Boer put a lot of faith in him and he's delivered this year. Atlanta United took a while to round into form this year, but Robinson has been the most consistent player on the team this year. He's been arguably the best CB in MLS and has earned a look with the National Team. I can't help but wonder if they brought some of the U23 players to get them some time together before Olympic qualifying in the spring. U23 players on the roster: Cannon, Dest, Robinson, McKennie, Pomykal, Yueill, CP and Sargent. CP won't play in Olympic qualifying. Schalke has been hesitant to release McKennie to youth tournaments.
  13. Finally after ten years living in New England I took the trek down to Flushing. I had a blast today. Had a GA pass which gets you into everywhere but Ashe (upper deck only at Armstrong and Grandstand). Mostly dabbled in a bunch of matches. Started at Tsitsipas-Rublev then went to watch the end of Berrettini's match. Caught the fifth set of the Bautista Agut upset. Tried to watch Andreescu but the court was packed so we parked it at the court next to it to watch a random women's match for a couple of games. We caught the end of Isner before going back to Armstrong to watch the last set of Halep's match. My buddy really wanted to watch Coco so we watched that whole match. After that it was the end of Shapovalov-FAA and a couple of random side court matches before heading back to Armstrong for Sabalenka-Azarenka before finally getting to see Kyrgios. We only made it for a set of Kyrgios because we had to catch the train back home. Armstrong went four hour men's match and then three three-set women's matches so Kyrgios went on long. TL;DR went to the Open, had fun Here are some pics Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk
  14. I'm kinda pissed they changed the playoff format so we can't get a home and home between these two teams with some stakes attached.
  15. I love this stupid league.
  16. I'm still saying 10 out of 10. 11 out of 10 would be blowing a lead and losing at home.
  17. Creeping towards a 10 out of 10 on the "that's so Spursy" scale, but there's still time...
  18. Newcastle has to use a sub 17 minutes into a game on a 90 degree day on the road against a team significantly better than them what's the worst that can happen?
  19. I LOVE soccer and I've never been able to stick with a Premier League team for some reason. The first team I ever tried to follow was Newcastle because they signed Patrick Kluivert who was my favorite player in the old FIFA video games but the EPL was hard to access in those days. I then flirted with Liverpool for a while because the 2005 Champions League Final was the first one I ever saw. I rooted for Everton for a little bit (yes I know that's counter intuitive having rooted briefly for Liverpool) but I got to know Roberto Martinez a little bit and despite his flaws as a coach he is one of the nicest human beings I've ever met. Now I'm just rooting for players. I have no affinity for Chelsea, but the USMNT is how I got into soccer so I want to see Pulisic do well. I've tried to get interested in Newcastle again because Miguel Almiron was so instrumental in Atlanta United winning MLS Cup but they're miserable to watch. Of the big six I tend to lean towards Liverpool to actually root for because Dortmund was the first European team I ever rooted for and stuck with and Klopp was the coach there when I first started following them, but I have no emotional investment in them.
  20. Pukki is the greatest goal scorer in Prem history. It's crazy.
  21. In his last 10 starts against the Braves Jacob deGrom has a 1.74 era and nearly 9 strike outs per game. The Braves are 8-2 in those game. What this team is doing defies all logic. They're getting contributions from scrap heap players like Hechavarria, Ortega and Hamilton which won't be sustainable in October. Dansby and Riley just started rehab assignments which is a major positive. The bullpen has been excellent for six games in a row now. Melancon, Greene and Martin are settling in. Jackson is pitching better without the pressure of being a closer. It's certainly a cautious optimism, but hopefully it's a group that's improving.
  22. MLS needs to stop pretending Atlanta-Orlando is a rivalry. It isn't. Orlando isn't in their class. Despite being each team's closest geographical rival (until Miami and Nashville come along) it's so forced. Atlanta's biggest rival is the Red Bulls. The Red Bulls also have two other rivals so they'll never play during rivalry week, but Atlanta and Orlando have played exactly one game with any kind of stakes and it was a US Open Cup semifinal.
