2019 Texas Softball - Connie's overboard, Anchors Aweigh!
texashorn13 replied to TrashMaster G's topic in UT Sports
Yes. MW rarely went out...pretty much Colorado and PGF. He primarily showed face to babysit already committed kids. Spencer much the same, though she was out slightly more often, but again really just babysitting. Kolaitis was everywhere, knew everyone and talked to every person at every park. Shaw isn't that guy. In my opinion there are just a whole lot of factors working against them right now, they've got a lot to overcome. That's why it wouldn't surprise me if they are heavy players on the portal. MW will always draw pitchers, that's a given. But beyond that I just don't know. For the record, I also hope I'm proven wrong and I'll happily eat crow if I am. -

I don't think the miracle is happening...aggy has no pitching on campus and none coming in (as of now). It's quite possible that they could be worse next year than they were this year, which makes me wonder what Snider is thinking. -

It'll be interesting to see what transpires over the summer...who leaves, who transfers in, and who our coaches start targeting on the recruiting trail. I worry that we don't have a strong recruiter on this staff...great talent evaluators but not strong recruiters. And I think it will get monumentally tougher now because of the moves aTm is making with their coaching staff. The volunteer (responsible for hitting) has been fired, and one of the paid assistants is getting reassigned to Dir. of Ops. That spot is being filled by a big name...Texas ties, ace recruiter and a name that will draw a lot of attention to College Station. I wouldn't be shocked if we aren't more active on the transfer portal than in the club world, at least for this cycle. -

Our offense is putrid, and I'd argue that the Oregon players have regressed...though I can't imagine what this team would have looked like without them. Yeesh -

Interesting question... I've been for the past 5 years (always on Thursdays) and in my opinion, yes, the new course is really tailored more towards the golf fan and less towards the socialite. Location: At the previous spot the course was surrounded by million dollar mansions and was located on the Four Seasons property. If you walked most of the back nine, each hole is lined with these mansions that get rented out to corporations and used for parties, etc. And a few holes on the front nine were played around the Four Seasons hotel, so many of the rooms and patios were being used as hosting events. The new location is the polar opposite...the neighborhood is rough, surrounded by trailer parks and low income housing, etc. The new course was also built on a landfill, so when it got nice and hot last year is smelled awful. Parking: Previously you could park close and walk to the gates. Now, parking is at the State Fair and it's a 20 minute bus ride without traffic. I also think that this year's player field is the worst they've had in some time. I can understand Thursday being down in attendance (the entire course was a ghost town) because of the weather and rain we had on Wednesday, but a lack of star power doesn't help either. If it weren't for Tony Romo, that place would have been deserted. He had by FAR the biggest crowd following him...about twice as large as Jordan Speith. And speaking of weather, the new course is all dirt paths and such for spectators (as opposed to paved at the previous) so Thursday was just a muddy mess. I think long term the tournament either moves back to Las Colinas, or up to Frisco when the new PGA Headquarters opens. While Crenshaw and crew did a nice job creating the course, it's an awful location and not accommodating at all. I know that Corporate Sponsorships and donations were WAY down this year, and that combined with the less than stellar playing field will make the Byron Nelson people have to re-evaluate things sooner rather than later. Hell, look at The Colonial player field vs. the Byron Nelson's...not even close.

Baseball and softball scholarship amounts shouldn't be equal based on 11.7 = 11.7, but should be equalled out based on necessary roster sizes. Softball carries 18-20. Baseball carries 35'ish. To me that's where the bigger discrepancy lies between the two and their scholarship equivalencies.

Completely agree, and I'll take it a step further and say that I also hate that they can do so without ever having talking to the Head Coach or anyone on the coaching staff. They can also request to have all communication with the coaching staff blocked. I think this part sends the wrong message to these kids/athletes. Part of the decision process in transferring should be the athlete having the tough conversation with the coaching staff. For me, it's a growth and maturity things, as well as responsibility. You know, the things this next generation of kids is severely lacking, and this just further gives them a platform to tuck tail and run from adversity, as opposed to dealing with it head on and learning to handle the consequences either way.

I've said this multiple times over the last month. Not bagging on the kid, but he has outgrown being a safety. His HS didn't even use him in that spot, even though that's what they called him. He plays downhill and loves to hit. For his sake, the sooner he comes to grip with the fact that he's a LB, the better. Hell, go to his Twitter and look at the tweet where he compares himself to Jamal Adams. The play that he posts where he's in coverage, he was beaten by at least 20 yards, the receiver just dropped the ball.

2019 Texas Softball - Connie's overboard, Anchors Aweigh!
texashorn13 replied to TrashMaster G's topic in UT Sports
She's not going anywhere, and in due time she will recruit really well at Oregon. Her ties to the west coach softball community are strong, and she will get kids from SoCal pretty quickly. As for the admin, all you have to do is read the article Oregon Live put out right before the Balint transfer, where the AD is interviewed. He basically gives his middle finger to Coach White (again) and backs the Lombardi hire fully, regardless of the transfers. Here's what will be interesting to watch, and I hesitate to post this, but it is being rumored that Oregon is strongly considering redshirting the entire team (all 11 of them) this year and forfeiting the entire season. I don't know if that's possible, but would be interesting. -

Neither of those players will end up at Texas. Balint is going to San Diego State (or not playing at all) and Alexis Mack will end up somewhere closer to her hometown. -
Michigan State and Stanford were at Darius Snow's basketball game last night. Bobby Kennedy and Duane Akina were representing Stanford.
-
100% agree with this. He's a signing day flip with the purpose of giving the Ag'tards some faux momentum.
-
Ok, what's with Vahe and Anderson switching in/out at LT?
-
The WV AD may tell him to take a hike. I just spent a week in WV with extended family and those people want him gone bad...and that was even before their shitastic excuse for a bowl game.

OU Recruiting 2019: White Visors and Belly Tats
texashorn13 replied to Machinator's topic in 🤫$9.95🤫
I remember Riley being brought up a few times and the name was met with a very loud resounding "NO" because he was part of the air raid family tree and that schtick wouldn't work around here. -
Is Justin Fields to OU a done deal? Or close to it? If so, I'd have to bet money that Spencer Rattler ends up on the portal...at least that's the way things are trending these days.
-
What's also concerning is that a lot of athletes are going to put themselves into the portal with hopes of bettering their situation, but in the end they won't get picked up and will end up with nothing at all.
-
So far, this is the correct answer. Mid major/non-P5 will essentially become a feeder system. Kids at those schools who perform (conference MVP, all-conference types) will transfer out to bigger schools. Non-P5's will basically become a training ground. This won't affect the Alabama's of the world negatively...they'll be able to fill immediate holes and needs with proven college players much more easily. This portal will have a huge trickle down effect in recruiting as well, especially in sports not named football. The sport I referenced above has 160+ players on the portal. That is 160 new scholarship opportunities for 2019 and 2020 kids to fill. This is where I think Junior Colleges will start to thrive. So now a school has three options available to them for filling a spot, and the route they choose will be dependent on the depth they have a the position. You get a college ready player from another school via the portal (this will be the option for a lot of P5's) You fill the spot with another HS recruit You go get a JUCO player Option 1 is where it's going to get NASTY. This is completely hypothetical: Let's say that Thompson and Rising leave, and Shane decides he's ready to get into coaching now. So who is our backup, today? Now Tom has to decide if getting another HS kid is his best option, or if he wants a transfer. He looks at the portal and doesn't see who he wants, but he knows the QB at University X had a huge year, put up ridiculous numbers, etc. Tom calls the QB's HS coach, trainer, gf, whoever to find out if he's happy. During the conversation he talks about having an immediate needs, sells some playing time because of Sam's injury history, etc. By the time the conversation is over, Tom has convinced the person on the other end of the line that Texas needs them and if they can get the QB on the portal Texas will take them. This option is what will make the rich way richer...they can cherry pick college proven kids to fill needs. And be honest, who would turn down Alabama, tOSU, Texas, OU, etc. in this situation? Option 1 is already happening in other sports, at a VERY high rate. Teams selling "we are a World Series, Final Four, championship team and you are the one missing piece we need. Get on the portal and come join us." It's freaking ridiculous. I don't think football has had the time to start working the system yet, since it was put into place during their season. But I'm calling it now, this spring will get WILD as far as the portal goes.

I posted this on the Recruiting Board in the 2019 thread as well. The Portal - I have pretty intimate knowledge with it and how it works. I can tell you that currently, in one small female NCAA D1 sport, there are 160ish players on the portal, today. That is for a non-revenue, no life after college, female sport. I can't imagine what Football, Basketball and Baseball look like. Here are some facts on how the portal works: A student-athlete does NOT have to inform their coach of an intent to transfer. They can walk into the compliance office and request to be put on the portal. Once that request is made, the compliance office has 48 hours to put the student-athletes name on the portal. Once the student-athlete requests to be put into the portal, all contact from any sport coach to that athlete is cut-off. So in this case, no football coach can contact Rising or Thompson directly. That athlete can contact coaches, that is ok, and a coach can request a meeting with the student-athlete but it has to be done through the compliance office and a compliance office official must be present during the meeting. This is assuming the player went in without telling the coach. If the coach was notified prior, the student-athlete can waive the no contact rule. Once on the portal, a student-athlete can be contacted by any coach in the country...it's free reign. And every coach has access to the portal. Yes, a student-athlete can start taking visits, including official ones, if they have any remaining from their original recruitment. Remember, you only get 5 paid official visits. Student-athletes on the portal are not required to sit out a year automatically. The conference transfer rules will be applied to the student-athlete...coaches may NOT individualized transfer rules to be applied to individual student-athletes. Once a student-athlete enters the portal, their future financial aid cutoff. So, if you do it before the beginning of the spring semester, you will not be on scholarship in the spring. So essentially Rising and Thompson have forfeited their scholarships for the spring. Also, your access to athletic facilities, trainers, etc. is immediately terminated. The coach from the sport can ask for that sanction to be waived - so if Rising and Thompson went to Herman and gave him a heads up, and he's ok with it, he can tell compliance that he would still like for them to have access to athletic facilities and such. This is how they can be currently practicing with the team while on the portal. Athletes on the portal do not fall under the same recruiting guidelines as first time recruits when it comes to contact period, dead period, quiet period, signing period, etc. They can be contacted any time after their name shows up on the portal. Football is the only sport that has a set game number to determine a redshirt. All other sports operate as any participation constitutes using a year of eligibility. If you're going to redshirt in non-Football sports it has to be declared before the season begins. The shirt can be pulled at any time, but one can not be applied after the start of the season. Hope this helps give a little bit of clarity on how this thing works. I have no idea how this thing came about, but it really is an awful thing to have right now. I know that several sports have already proposed legislation to change the portal drastically, or to get rid of it all together. But those things only happen every two years, so this will be the model for at least two years.

Let me add some insight on a few things...and I apologize for the length of the reply, too many words, etc. Fields - his sister will attend Georgia to play softball and that family has been all Georgia FOREVER. His transfer is strictly playing time related and the racism cry is just an excuse. Rising and Thompson (and possibly Overshown) - welcome to a new generation of athlete and kid. This portal stuff will be the worst thing to happen to college athletics in a long time. Some will call it entitled, and to a degree it is, but this generation of kids is used to instant gratification, in all facets of life. Patience is a word that does not exist in this generations vocabulary. The Portal - I have pretty intimate knowledge with it and how it works. Non-Texas Recruiting Notes and Highlights: 2019 Edition

I just read on ESPN that his parents kept him home and made him sign the LOI with them, wouldn't let him go to school to sign with his friends. Crazy -
There is really no bigger indictment of how awful our run game was than looking at OU's depth chart and realizing that they were rushing for 300 yards a game with their 3rd and/or 4th string running backs.
