  1. The storyboards from the Larry Sellers scene that I wanted went for $1,950 so I don't feel very bad about forgetting to check in on them yesterday.
  2. It's like a tree that grew around a fence or something.
  3. Team Doom is making our annual contribution to the pot. I might as well lodge my annual grievance against the shitawful interface of ESPN's game dashboard. It's like they actively hate their user base.
  4. What kind of an animal is in charge of the HR decisions at that company? Someone should fight them!!!
  5. Bump to remind anyone that was considering bidding. The set of storyboards that I had my eye on is already past the amount I'd bid... https://www.julienslive.com/lot-details/index/catalog/504/lot/221378/The-Big-Lebowski-Three-Pages-Scene-52-Set-Up-5-7-Larry-Sellars-Scene-Original-Storyboards?url=%2Fauctions%2Fcatalog%2Fid%2F504%3Fpage%3D4

  7. Setting up "carpet cleaning appointments" for Electrosux, er, Electrolux vacuum salesmen by cold-calling people out of the phone book. The carpet cleaning was secondary - it was really just a means of getting a high-pressure salesperson inside the homes of the gullible in order to sell them vacuum cleaners, so I had a lot of leeway in bargaining down the price, throwing in extra rooms, etc., in order to set an appointment. The "call center" was the utility room in the back of an office in a dumpy strip mall. The room itself was probably 3'x5' - just enough for two chairs and two small tables, each with a phone and a phone book. If nobody else had checked off a number, it was fair game. There were two phone books, so some lucky people got more than one call from me and my coworker, a former chemistry PhD student with a drug and alcohol problem and multiple DUIs. We each chain smoked in that tiny, unventilated room for an entire summer. It paid remarkably well though, something like $10/hr, plus $20 per appointment set, which was pretty solid pay for that kind of drudgery by mid-90s standards. We could each average about an appointment an hour, and I have no idea how they managed to keep paying us both, because some of those appointments were never, ever, going to turn into a sale. The most enjoyable part of the job was occasionally calling the people who would go ballistic on telemarketers and deliberately provoking them, or just making juvenile prank calls (sorry, Livshits family!).
  8. Yeah, I think you bite the bullet and talk to him when you're alone, but I wouldn't wait too long for a perfect opportunity if a less-perfect opportunity presents itself first. If he's touchy or pissy about it, at least you tried. You'll both get over it eventually. And you can live with yourself if he keels over dead tomorrow. But if something is fucked with his system and he doesn't know it (or perhaps on some level he suspects but he's been in denial or minimizing it internally), then bringing it up could be life-saving.

  11. I've always thought that wallets made for absolutely terrible gifts because of so many different possible preferences that people can have. And it's something that a person will rely on and use so frequently that it's kind of a shitty imposition for a gift-giver to presume to know someone's preferences, and/or expect them to abandon those preferences on the basis of having received a gift. I kind of feel the same way about watches as gifts, at least if they aren't very carefully considered.
  12. In part because every right-thinking male calls it "Pantera" on the rare occasions in which they must directly reference it.
