Vasek's just an example. If they feel like he's not over the injury stuff, or he's not actually good enough to hold the fort in the event of a Lance Jackson injury, then sure cut him loose. But it's interesting to me reading this thread and others around Surly, and you'll find damn near every player who isn't a surefire starter or a freshman discussed as a transfer possibility. And on an individual, player-to-player basis, that makes total sense. But we do have to fill out a depth chart, whether it's with guys that are already here or ones from the portal.
I mentioned Vasek specifically because I was looking at our depth chart at edge the other day. You've got Simmons and Jackson as your starters. Great. Spence mixing in, that's good. Then Zina, who I feel like I haven't seen much about, and Orogbo who I'm almost certain I saw something along the lines of "promising but not ready". I'd say you need at least one more body in that mix. You can go to the portal and get the edge version of, I dunno, Cole Brevard, to come in and join the rotation and it likely works out OK. But it's not free; by definition you have to pay that guy more than what his current team is willing or able to pay him. Not to mention you don't really know what kind of guy he is, don't have a great handle on his medicals, etc.
The post I responded to was concerned with losing the sort of "middle class" of our roster. Guys that probably ain't gonna end up stars but can fill out the depth chart. To be perfectly honest, I don't remember Vasek hardly at all this season but the official stats claim he played in all 12 games. Seems like he could fall into that category, unless, as you say, the ask is nonsense.
