I've spent all morning talking with dealers about buying one so I feel pretty well versed at the moment. It came down to the Mach E versus the Hyundai Ioniq 5 for us. My wife didn't care but I liked the Mach E a little more just because I think it looks cooler and I feel more comfortable about starting a 10-year relationship with Ford than I do with Hyundai. They are both really nice vehicles.
The Mach E feels like a hell of a lot of car for a 15 year old. Maybe that's true of all EVs though. Ride is a little rougher than the Ioniq 5 but it's not awful. The big strike against the Mach E, and the thing that almost killed it for us, is the controls/infotainment system. It's a giant, vertically-oriented tablet in the middle of the dash and that's it. No physical controls for anything whatsoever. The A/C controls stay on the screen at all times but they're all the way at the bottom so you have to look quite low to use them. And since it's just a touch screen, you do have to look. We ultimately decided that we could live with it because we liked the rest of the car, but to be 100% honest with you I can't see how it won't be distracting as fuck for a teenager/new driver. He's going to be playing with the goddamn tablet instead of driving.
