  1. Sure, they were called pirates.
  2. I've decided that it was always corrupt. The difference is that in the past, the bar for corruption was so low that practically anyone could play. In the west, you could pay off a judge with a couple pieces of silver. Years ago, you could pay off a cop with a couple $100 bills. You could probably get a politician for a couple grand. But today, the price for corruption is so restrictive that only the mega-rich are able to get in the game. And since there's no accountability for the mega-rich, there's really no reason to be discreet. So here we are.
  3. Now get Bill and Hillary in the picture with the same vibe.
  4. What if you're from New Mexico but get pregnant in Texas? Can you take the fetus back to New Mexico for an abortion?
  5. Well, yeah, I was assuming he may actually be a decent person, but never spoke out because of some legal reason. I never even considered Burnett was in on the con. Shame on me... again.
  6. You know who could have helped nip this whole thing in the bud? Mark Burnett... all he had to do was tell the truth about how The Apprentice was made. The second Trump lost that show and stated positioning himself as kingmaker in the GOP Burnett should have pulled back the curtain and exposed him.
  7. Texas Republicans have been fixing public education for 30 years.... these things take time.
  8. Remember when the worst thing we thought Thomas did was discuss porn with a female subordinate and maybe put pubic hair on a Coke can?
  9. He still is. He hasn't given a second thought about how his Made-in-China-Trump-faced-American flag may be the same as flag burning. He thinks it's making the flag better.
  10. What was the turnaround on PSA? I have a few that I've thought about sending off.
  11. I doubt they would want their kids in those schools. Those schools are too elitist. As long as they get a little extra cash to pay for a church school, or homeschooling materials, or any school that doesn't have so many of "those kids" in it they'll be fine with it. It's just another example of a poor man giving a rich man a dollar, as long as he gets a penny out of the deal.
  12. Roger and Anne [Hutchinson] Roger and Anne got kicked out of Mass. Moved to Rhonde Island and said, "Kiss my... knee." It helped my 8th graders remember.
  13. I have yet to hear someone explain how vouchers help public education. The governor is the caretaker of public education. It's a temporary gig for a permanent position. Public education will continue regardless of the individual who occupies the office. The pendulum will swing, and eventuallyTexas will do right by public education. What I don't understand is why a governor wouldn't want to be THE public education governor. Oh yeah, because solving problems is hard, and Greg Abbott doesn't do hard (at least not since the tree fell on him).
  14. That's one of the main things that led to my political shift. Republicans want the title, or they want the credit, but they don't want to do the work. Implementing policy is difficult. I may not have liked Obamacare, but at least the Dems in his administration were willing and earnest about doing the work. With Republicans it's either a gift for an easy cash grab or a half-assed product based on ill-conceived policy and conspiracy theories.
  15. When you have 5 school districts that can't pay the bills... it means you got 5 poorly run districts. When 80%* of your school districts can't pay the bills... it means you got a poorly run state. *80% was the number of districts with significant budget short falls. It was shared at a staff meeting.
  16. Fuck this ditch pig. She has no place in education. Every word of that curriculum was available to the public before she thought about running for office. For me, it's not about a mistaken person learning her errors... it's about an incompetent person refusing to do the work to inform herself.
  17. Pay raises don't mean shit of it means you can't hire adequate staff. I'd gladly give up the extra $75/month their raise gave me in exchange for another staff member that would reduce my class sizes from low 30s to mid 20s. Or gave my school another ESL teacher that we desperately need. Or paid the $400+ I spent this year on online resources alone that my students use daily. But yeah, that Facebook post makes it all worth it. Eat shit Greg Abbott.
