  1. We were over there Wednesday looking at boats and letting the kids see the beaches on the other side of the state. Weather, water, etc are all great right now, just hot as hell. The boat game in Miami is otherworldly. I could dog do days on the water just touring marinas. There is a boat yard in Aventura that had a couple of massive yachts that looked like they were getting final rigging done.
  2. The last one I priced was on a MC 205 replacement through a dealer using Jasper long blocks but that has been a few years ago. I ended up selling it with a cracked block (fully disclosed) rather than fix it and bought the X1 I sold last year. If he gets quotes anywhere near the numbers above, we’ll just do it ourselves. $15k for a long block replacement on a 2009 boat is asinine. There is no doubt at this point that he got fucked by the seller. There was a terminal issue of some sort that will hopefully get cleared up when it is pulled. Nothing you can do now but write checks.
  3. A wasted summer of fishing due to constant winds and rain and an early tropical storm finally came together this afternoon. Hit the big snook hard with one right at 38-40 inches (biggest snook I’ve ever pulled on the beach, took 20 minutes to finesse him in), 3 more over 30, and a bunch in the 20-30 range. The beaches got worked over with the storms but there was a nice cut formed also. Weather was perfect today, water was finally fairly clear, and for once it came together into a good couple of hours on the water. See what tomorrow brings.
  4. Buddy just bought a 2009 Nautique, first trip out it overheats. Took it in to get checked out, motor is shot. The overheat cutoff didn’t kick in properly so it melted all of the wiring and they believe it cooked the internals. Not sure if it was a water pump or impeller issue at this point. Goes back to if you buy a new inboard, immediately change the impeller and fluids, change the trailer tires, etc. He overpaid for the boat and now is probably going to drop another $8k on a new motor. Boat ownership is a constant pain in the ass, but the good days make it worth it.
  5. Park City definitely caters to the higher end, but I don’t know that many are formal per se just higher priced. River horse, Loco Lizard, High West, etc were all good. I would lean more towards the bars like Drafts or some of the other similar places.
  6. I was a good kid until I discovered alcohol at about 14 and got a truck at 16, then it was all downhill until I got to college. We used to steal barrels and other road stuff from construction sites and block off major roads in the middle of the night. We would hook up dumpsters at stores and drag them to where the garbage trucks couldn’t get them. I used to get people at work to buy alcohol for me, I would mix up mixed drinks in the original containers and then sell them out of my truck at school. We used to shoot out neon signs with a BB gun. There is a laundry list of other stuff I probably shouldn’t post.
  7. The cash cow that it will be tells a different story. My kids were more excited for this one than most of the others, but they are Marvel nerds and girls. I have no idea what’s going on, but it was still enjoyable as a stand alone movie.

    Fruit

There is a huge mango tree at a neighbors house in FL. I’m not a big fan of store bought, but I need to grab a couple fresh ones and try them.

    Fruit

The best fruit is whatever you can buy locally that has been picked at the proper time. Stuff from the grocery store just isn’t the same. If I’m only going with one, it’s going to be blackberries. I celebrate the entire berry family though.
  10. Went and saw it with the family tonight. My wife and oldest are Marvel obsessed, my youngest and me not so much. However, we all were ready to go sit in a theater again. It was worth the watch just for the record. I’m sure they will probably go see it again at some point.
  11. Same reason we bought when we did. Our kids were a year or so younger than each of yours when we bought, but after a couple of years of looking we decided they weren’t getting younger and we needed to go ahead and do it for them to enjoy it. If school’s out for more than a couple of days, they are at the beach house. It gets them away from all the bs at home and let’s them have time with each other and outside. The summers get a little long, so the last two years we have brought them back home for 2-3 weeks in the middle to see their friends and do other things which makes everything go better. As others have noted, the costs are what they are so make sure you can afford it. Insurance and taxes keep going up, repairs are a constant, utilities and other things are always there, we have someone check on it once a week while we are gone which costs something, etc. but for us it’s worth it.
  12. When we bought (not in Galveston), we identified the areas we were interested in and then found a realtor we liked to really start working it. However, there are less than 10% of the property listings where we are today versus when we bought 4 years ago (need to sell it and take advantage of the market.) With the limited inventory, I would go to Zillow and look at what’s for sale and see if there is anything interesting and then bring a realtor into the discussion.
  13. No, leaving it at the end, but most places we have stayed have been delivering towels even if there is no daily cleaning.
  14. Still tipping, just like I’m tipping on carry outs. They didn’t set the policies, so it seems reasonable to me.
  15. We ended up with quite a bit of rain which we needed so not all bad. It blew through pretty quickly though which was a plus. Sea turtle nests took major hits from the tide which sucks.
  16. Museums, Planetarium, Aquarium, the bean, the towers, walk the river in the afternoon when the bars are open, etc are all good options. We eat breakfast at Yolk every trip, it’s the one constant over quite a few years of going to Chicago back to when they were only there. So many good options to eat downtown but the last few trips we’ve ended up at Roka Akor, Steak 48, and a few others in that area. We stay at the Langham, so typically we just end up around there eating and have done most of the nicer ones in that area. The Peckish Pig which is closer to Evanston is also an outstanding meal as well.
  17. Was booking flights to fly with my two kids back home for a camp they have and all of the available seats were middle or someone had booked the window on one side and the aisle on the other side. I ended up finding a different flight where we could all sit together rather than deal with it at the airport or on the plane. If I don’t fly first, i book aisle or I find a different flight. I don’t have the patience to deal with middle/window seating and I want to stretch my legs on occasion. I’ve always just found the closest aisle seat to the front with a window already booked rather than book the aisle on an empty row though, why jump in a new row when the exact seating arrangement I shoot for is available already.
  18. I would think if sitting, you can run whatever you want as long as it isn’t the same color as the lights used while underway. While moving, they should probably all be off or at least the ones visible should be off or turned down to not cause issues.

At the point in time it became more about what tastes good and less about what you needed to fuel your body, the backwards slide began. We have clearly gone over the cliff in some aspects now as people get further away from the kitchen and more dependent on what they can pick up. It will only get worse as we get into the next generation of kids that have no clue what to do in a kitchen. Growing up, there were a lot of days where if I wanted to eat I better plan on cooking something because both my parents worked odd hours and we had to fend for ourselves some.
  20. Agreed, no Pelagics near me so it just hasn’t been something I’ve chased.
  21. There are plenty of bass lakes in a little cooler locales I would think. Bass master does a top 100 bass lakes and would be a good place to start. Going forward I would avoid offshore and look at inshore fishing options for reds, trout, snook, etc. if you want to try salt. They will be much closer to what he thinks he likes. I grew up a lake guy and don’t have any interest in going offshore although I still do it occasionally. Sight casting big fish in shallow water is much more my speed than bumping the bottom with cut bait.
  22. PC isn’t exactly known as a budget friendly location. You could probably do areas in Colorado much cheaper.
  23. We split a week between there and Moab 2-3 years ago in July. I prefer Moab that time of the year and PC in the winter, but we enjoyed the trip. Went from 100+ in Moab one morning to 50 in PC that afternoon. We did some hiking and walking/eating around downtown on our trip. However, there were UTV tours, fishing, golf, water activities, biking, etc to keep you busy. I second CTJ on the VRBO option. There are plenty of houses to pick from.

Eating unhealthy is easy and pushed on you at this point, eating healthy is also fairly easy but takes some planning and resolve and a little more time. Every place has free refills, cheap desserts, bread at every meal, over the top portions, etc. rather than trying to help people make better decisions. The only way it ever gets resolved is to make it more expensive/difficult to eat like shit and a cheaper deal to eat better. I’ve spent most of my life on the bigger side although not necessarily a fatass, just more a fullback type than a WR or OL. I’ve always eaten fairly well, but one thing that made a difference for me was getting some medical issues resolved. After seeing a cardiologist and getting some things straight, I dropped 40 pounds pretty easily and have held it off with no issues. I need to get down another 20 or so, but just haven’t committed to giving up bread and a few other things. I felt horrible and extremely self conscious when my weight hit it’s peak. I think most in that group feel the same way, but also feel stuck in their ways with too much uncertainty on how to change.
  25. I’m sure I’m in the minority out there, but that’s such a waste. There is absolutely nothing you can do with that fish.
