  1. I understand the instinct to worry, but we didn’t have any transfers last year on this exact date either. There is plenty of time, 2 years ago Marcus Carr didn’t commit to us until Mid July.
  2. Former ORU coach Paul Mills and K-State Jerome Tang were on the Baylor staff together.
  3. Which part? The part where I say the Beard situation may have affected these kid’s decisions or the part where I say I expect upheaval but not of the entire roster every year. I don’t think either of those require such a dramatic response from you.
  4. It’s important to remember though, that some of this instability happening is because of the Chris Beard situation. Not sure Brumbaugh or AJ Johnson leave if the coach they committed to wasn’t fired for DV charges. We thought guys might bail in the middle of the season when it first happened. They waited until the season was over instead. I expect a certain level of instability to be the new normal with the portal, but I don’t necessarily expect it to this extent every single year.
  5. I can’t really argue with the AJ Johnson stuff. A guy going to the NBL months after signing with us was not something I anticipated to be a problem (AJ Johnson is literally the only guy in the country to do it). Im still very happy about Ron Holland (assuming he doesn’t bounce too) and I don’t regret Dillon Mitchell. But Johnson and Morris were wastes of time and resources.
  6. Very few Americans go the NBL route. The NBL has a next stars program meant for guys to prep for the NBA, but it’s filled with other international players. Their most recent success is Josh Giddey, who is Australian anyway.
  7. The last guy to go to the NBL was Lamelo Ball, it worked out fine for him.
  8. I wasn’t all that concerned about transfers not coming in yet, it’s still very early for that. But the number of people leaving is hard not to worry about. Landing Abmas would definitely help soothe that though.
  9. Last one out, shut off the lights. Shit is looking rough right now
  10. Not a shock, but still not sure what’s a better situation for him than here.
  11. Some Louisiana kids are just going to stay in Louisiana. Different coach at LSU now, so I guess it’s a fresh start for him there.
  12. He shot 46% from 3 his first year, I’m guessing the truth is somewhere in the middle.
  13. Makes sense. Arizona coach Tommy Lloyd recruited his brother to Gonzaga, when Lloyd was an assistant there.
  14. Calipari doesn’t team build at all, he just recruits high talent with little regard to fit. They’ve got 4 of the top 5 hs recruits coming in this class. No idea if they fit, but they got them. I guess it works if one of those players is Anthony Davis. The building around freshmen has already largely stopped. Like I said earlier, Duke and Kentucky are pretty much the only programs still doing it. Freshmen will be more complimentary now as opposed to the main course. So I think attitude and disposition matter more than ever for HS recruits. Will a star freshman be willing to take on the role needed on a veteran team? The answer being no is why Beard passed on Keyonte George. Dillon Mitchell’s offensive game clearly wasn’t ready, but he wasn’t a team killer either. He fit in with the guys and didn’t demand the ball, that probably played a part in why he was a take and George was not.
  15. No one is arguing with you about the transfer portal being supremely important. The disagreement is that you’re abandoning 5-star freshman completely and basing that on the randomness of the tournament, and not even long term data from the tournament because the portal hasn’t even been around that long. That is reactionary. Btw, Duke made the final 4 last year with freshman Paolo Banchero being their best player. Gonzaga made the national championship the year before that with freshman Jalen Suggs being their best, and there was no tournament the year before that. You’re getting caught up in the moment of this year. Coaches need to be more judicious, maybe there are some 5-stars you avoid, but you don’t throw the baby out with the bath water.
  16. The importance of freshman has obviously waned, but that’s a dumb way to do the measurement. Brandon Miller, Gradey Dick, and Jarace Walker were all 5 star freshman who played major roles in their teams getting 1 seeds. To act like they don’t matter at all because of the randomness of the tournament is silly. The right freshman still have value and any coach with half a brain will still pursue them, it’s just that nobody is building their team around freshman anymore except for Duke and Kentucky.
  17. He stayed at ORU for much longer than I thought he would so he must like Mills a lot. I think it’s in his best interest to go to a bigger program though.
  18. That .388 doesn’t even tell the whole story imo. This dude shot 43% from three when he actually had another good player with him in Kevin Obanor. Obanor transferred to Tech right after their tourney run a few years ago and defenses got to tee off on just Abmas.
