  1. I went in house almost 19 years ago after a few mind numbing years as a big law associate. Best move I ever made. I'm sure there are some good law firm environments that are better than a shitty in house gig, but as a general rule, in house is way better for work life balance and just general sanity. The really shitty in house gigs tend to be the ones where you have a former hard charging big law partner hired as GC who tries to run it like a law firm.
  2. Dammit, are we not doing phrasing?
  3. I'm assuming you've only been in the market 2 years because you're a young buck. If so, this is the best damn thing that could happen to you. Just keep shoveling money in on autopilot (not an advisor, not investment advice, yada yada yada). I didn't have money to invest until 1998 and by 2009 I was wondering why the fuck I'd spent 11 years automatically investing religiously. In hindsight, those 2 brutal bears were the best thing that ever happened for my retirement.
  4. "Her daughter, Bonner Acker, is an avid equestrian and works in interior design." She seems pretty low maintenance. Edit- Not sure why the hell that spoilered. Quote
  5. And everyone acted like all of them together have no chance against Icarus, when the Flashette did a pretty good job of beating his ass for a bit. Hell, I've always wondered how anyone beats the flash or quicksilver.
  6. The roidy officer is named Pullease. Can you imagine the shit he gets with that name? It was just a matter of time before he snapped.
  7. Vince was firmly rejected by the birthing person. I eventually named a dog that though.
  8. Uncle boobs must weigh 300 pounds.
  9. I'm beginning to think Thatguy drinks Dos Equis.
  10. “To date, this is the largest treasure trove of Roman coins found in a cave in northern Spain,” Odd qualifiers there. I mean we found a shitload of Greek coins in a cave in northern Spain, a bunch of roman coins in a cave in central Spain, and even more Roman coins in a bog in northern Spain. But this is pretty cool, too. So far...
  11. Miguel's dad is going to be the head cartel enforcer that instead of guns uses... wait for it... karate to keep people in line. Johnny, Daniel and Asian Gilbert Gottfried team up to take down the cartel in a winner take all karate match. Meanwhile, back at home, a random karate fight breaks out at west valley high.
  12. Marty almost got arrested by the feds or whacked by the mob or Mexican cartel but fortunately at the last second some miracle happens and they live to launder another day. But in doing so, the seeds of the next catastrophe are planted.
  13. I completed my backdoor Roth for the full 7,000 (I'm an old) on Tuesday. Great timing. Funny thing about psychology, I spent last night lamenting that I got that 7k in right before a sharp drop. Didn't think twice about the far larger amount already in the Roth that was hit by the same downturn. I guess in my mind somehow the funds were different.
  14. If I owned a car dealership, I'd easily have a million dollars. So both at the same time. But Ali, every day and twice on Sunday.
  15. Do you recall gardere as having a rifle in football?
  16. I guess we have Asian Gilbert Gottfried in season 5.
  17. Johnny gently telling Miguel of the new arrangement- your Mom and I are hooking up.
  18. [Mansplaining] Pacing [Mansplaining].
  19. This. I'm already mentally preparing to sell my house in 18 months when the youngest graduates and I'm just stunned at all the stupid shit I own. And this is after renting a 10 cubic yard dumpster 2 years ago and cleaning out the most useless of it. Seems that about 10% of my stuff serves a useful function (clothes, utensils, etc.) or brings me joy (fishing and camping gear). The rest is just a bunch of shit cluttering up my life.
  20. This. I remember I was at Disney animal kingdom and the yeti ride was stuck. You could see passengers at the top of the ride just buckled in and unable to get out. I turned to my kids and said bad news, we aren't riding that thing.
  21. Have you considered investing in timber properties? Virtually a foolproof retirement investment.
  22. 4% is certainly conservative but that's the whole point, it's supposed to cover the worst case scenarios and still be "safe". 5 or even 6 percent works in a lot of cases but if you're retiring in 1929, 1968 or 2000 you don't want to be withdrawing above 4%. If you can be flexible and cut expenses or get part time work when the shit hits the fan then it gets easy. In my situation, I hit my own version of a bear market in 2018 when half my portfolio went Thanos on me. No problem, go back to work for a bit and ride it out. Flexibility is key.
  23. It all depends on the income you think you'll need. Good rule of thumb is withdrawing 4% annually adjusted for inflation will suffice for a 30 year retirement and a 3 to 3.5% withdrawal rate will last into perpetuity for a decently balanced 60/40 or so portfolio. So if you need 80k a year, 2MM should do for a 30 year retirement, and 2.5MM for a longer one. If you can get by on 50k a year shit gets fairly easy to reach on a professional income. There's always a chance we hit 1980s Japan in the market or have 70s style inflation, and of course those numbers go out the window. But in those cases I think we're all fucked anyway. The scariest thing is the sequence of return risk. A really shitty bear market in the first year of retirement is just brutal for your prospects. Someone that retired in 2000 might be eating cat food while someone who did in 1999 or 2001 is fine.
  24. In house lawyer for financial services firm.
  25. The best thing that ever happened to me was in 2005 going to work for a regulated financial firm that made it a pain in the ass to own individual stocks. Nothing but stale boring low cost index funds for me since then and it's done wonders for both my psyche and balance sheet.
