  1. The State's first witness this morning is the clerk from Cup Foods that sold Floyd the cigarettes and took the counterfeit $20. Surveillance video was played along with his testimony.
  2. As I suspected, the defense didn't have much to say in cross. Just asked if her life had changed since the video went viral. 9-year-old now on the stand. Previous witness' cousin.
  3. I keep seeing 4 weeks of testimony, 2 weeks a side, then closing arguments and deliberations. The teen that shot the video is now on the stand. Defense is going to have a hard time on cross.
  4. They have been. Their trial is set for August. Not sure who suggested the separation of trials.
  5. State's opening was brutal for the defendant. Very heavy emphasis on "What does someone look like when they're ODing on opiates? Asleep" Defense counsel is up now. He's pounding on reasonable doubt. Strange emphasis on number of investigators on the case, number of documents, and number of witnesses. Sounds like "victim was under the influence and died from it" will be their primary claim.
  6. Opening arguments are under way now. All the MSP media are showing this live, so there are a lot of links out there for a stream.
  7. Minnesota will be making everyone 16 or older eligible for vaccination starting Tuesday. So far things have been going well here (trucking along at 24K first doses a day and 40K total) https://www.mprnews.org/story/2020/10/04/walz-expands-vaccine-eligibility-to-minnesotans-16-and-older?fbclid=IwAR0Z4iXS5Sw-dPShaU52o_Cl90BNhSU5w7iVefJjqgPl2wFSLMFV7Lbc3Zc
  8. Hence the need for 40 present and voting to continue said filibuster, instead of 60 to stop.
  9. I don't think he completely walks, either. He's facing too many charges to skip on all of them. Recall there is a charge of 2nd degree manslaughter in addition to murder 3 and murder 2. Voir dire is almost done. They're looking for 2 more seated jurors.
  10. Moderna 1 on Wednesday morning here in MN. Injection site is still a bit sore this morning, but that's all. Unfortunately, I'm not able to send text messages by telepathy in the 48 hours since the shot. Damn you Bill Gates!
  11. Talking filibuster + 40 present and voting to continue said filibuster. Git 'ur done.
  12. This jury will be more diverse than that. However, the settlement is causing problems in voir dire. No one has been seated yesterday or today. This morning, the judge requestioned the 9 seated jurors about if and how the announcement may affect their ability to be impartial. He sent off two, and I don't remember how that changes the makeup of the jury.
  13. Voir dire resumed this morning. Two more jurors were seated before lunch. The next juror questioned after lunch provided this exchange:
  14. Stacey Abrams and Rafael Warnock at the top of the bill in Georgia will keep African-American turnout very high, no matter what the rules are there come next fall.
  15. BREAKING: Minneapolis City Council approves $27 million settlement in civil case against city. Presser with attorneys at 1.
  16. Local news Twitter is saying it's because she once ran into AG Keith Ellison doing advocacy work. Audio was cut earlier due to defense asking sensitive personal questions, and camera operator is being very careful.
  17. The Minneapolis City Council is currently in closed session to discuss a potential settlement with the Floyd family in their wrongful death lawsuit against the City. Any potential details (i.e. $$$$$) will come out afterwards. This will not be a cheap settlement. Recall that the Damond shooting cost the Minneapolis taxpayer $20 million. Meanwhile, back in the courthouse, defense struck the first potential juror of the morning. They've used 4 of their 9 strikes, and the state has used 8 of 15.
  18. I don't think the defense will be dumb enough to bring up Floyd's previous arrest in Houston. Because if they do, it allows the State to remind everyone that the officer who arrested him A) has a long rep of fabricating evidence, and B) is charged with capital murder because of it. https://abc13.com/george-floyd-arrest-houston-hpd-officer-gerald-goines/6247453/ As for stats on police misconduct, 538 tried to measure it. Stats are notoriously hard to get. https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/police-misconduct-costs-cities-millions-every-year-but-thats-where-the-accountability-ends/
  19. Target seems to think that the office is close to dead. They're bailing out of their lease of another high-rise building in downtown Minneapolis.
  20. Lou Raguse is KARE-11's man in the courtroom on high profile cases like this one. He interviewed one of the jurors in the Mohammed Noor case from a few years ago. https://twitter.com/LouRaguse/status/1370081218096730114?s=20
  21. Most of the other voir dire followers on Twitter thought that defense was going to strike him right then and there. Instead, it sounded like defense counsel tried to save the strike and get him dismissed for cause. It didn't work.
  22. Not only does Juror 36 want to be there, he was just seated.
