  1. Play La Marseillaise. PLAY IT!
  2. The sound mixer is doing an awful job. Commentators mikes are way too loud, the main event audio feed way too low.
  3. I'm liking this as well. One thing that Mike Tirico is borrowing from other English-language telecasts is the idea of saying as little as possible. If Costas were still the host he still wouldn't have shut up.
  4. Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan would succeed him, and she was a mover and shaker in the aforementioned Legislature prior to being named Gov. Walz's running mate. I believe she would also be the first Native American governor in the US.
  5. The rest of America is learning what us Minnesotans have known for a while: he's a damn effective governor. Alongside a DFL Legislature, they are a big fan of competent governance. Among other things, his administration had the unemployment system ready to roll and fully funded when the COVID shutdowns sent everyone to the unemployment line. I'd be sad to lose him to the Vice Presidency, but the DFL bench is deep here and I'm not worried about any potential replacements.
  6. Guilty as charged. What surprised me was the speed and intensity at which the ranks closed around VP Harris, and the jolt of electricity it has given Democrats. I was worried about a freewheeling floor fight at the DNC, but in about 4 hours it was all over but the paperwork. Republicans getting caught completely flatfooted was strictly gravy.
  7. The last time there was this much energy and excitement on the left flank was January 2008, when Barack Obama beat Hillary in the Iowa caucus.
  8. The primary financier of the Minnesota GOP over the past decade is currently serving 21 years in federal prison for sex trafficking of minors, so it's not a surprise they've got no morals.
  9. Walz doesn't bring anything to the table that isn't already there, but it's nice to see his reputation noticed east of the St. Croix. It'd be a shame to lose him to the VP.
  10. This is why you defer or play defense first when you win the toss.
  11. That's where I was too. The leadership and rank-and-file of the Minnesota DFL are firmly on board. Lets fucking go!
  12. ...until they realize that Trump = Bibi.
  13. The fresh water condenser at Midway Island is broken down.

  15. Unfortunately, both Nigel Farange and Jeremy Corbyn will be in the next Parliament.
  16. LBJ quit the race on March 31, 1968. The Democrats that weren't dying were at each others throat the rest of the way to the election. This let Richard Nixon, who had a long reputation as a shameless, opportunistic piece of shit, define himself as the law-and-order candidate and cruise to the win. The only way that Biden isn't the Democratic Party nominee is if he's dead.
  17. It's interesting to see the fates of the various right-wing parties around Europe. The right is back on the rise in Germany, Belgium, and France. Macron's snap election is an attempt to force their hand in France before they're ready. Meanwhile, across the Channel, the Tories are heading for a flogging so severe they may not even be His Majesty's Opposition.

    The Border

Ask US citizens of Japanese descent whether or not citizenship saved them.
  19. No one is sleeping on the Senate, but this map is absolutely hideous. Defending in Ohio and Montana to hold a 50-50 split? Yuk. The only place to play offense is Florida, and that's because of the abortion referendum maybe having enough coattails to pick off Rick Scott. Cal Cunningham's inability to keep his pants zipped up has proven to be incredibly costly.
  20. Tories are heading for a paddlin'...
  21. The Germans have been doing that for 80 years, and they still can't completely clean out the rot. Somewhere around 1740, Grandpa GR would come ashore in the American sector with his artillery unit, and would alternate between sending arty shells and .30-06s at the krauts from Normandy to the heart of Germany. Two Bronze Stars. Never told a soul about any of it until the day he died. We didn't learn about any of it until we read his DD214. Somewhere in my house is a picture of him with his unit in the Ardennes Forest in February 1945. Watching the replays of the ceremonies, and dammit it's getting dusty in here.
