The triumphant return of Quinn Ewers to the quarterback spot saw the senior QB get his second win in the Red River Rivalry. However, the scoreboard destruction of Oklahoma still masks some of the issues that have been persisting with this Texas team. It’s becoming increasingly clear that the Horns have yet to be tested, and they’re not really passing with flying colors in every facet. There’s no one, dominant team this year, of course. Everyone has holes. But when I see that the Texas pass offense put up a worse performance against OU than did the Auburn Tigers, of all teams, that has me concerned. So too does the defense. The Longhorns have yet to play a team with the ability to complete a downfield pass, and they’ve been able to dedicate scheme and numbers to the run game as a result—yet they’re still not as dominant as they were last year. UGA will be a test in that respect, so we’ll find something out about the Longhorns this weekend—one way or the other. Next Power ranking the SEC after week 7: #2 - Georgia The Bulldogs have still not quite been as impressive as most hoped so far this year. They have won convincingly in several games—that Clemson win just keeps looking better and better, in particular—but games like this previous Saturday against Mississippi State have been a thorn in their side. Yes, if you look at total yardage, it was a convincing win. But this is the type of game that was a wholesale destruction under previous championship squads under Kirby Smart. We can write it off a little bit as a lookahead spot for the Bulldogs, who will be traveling to Austin this Saturday. But the alarm bells are still there for UGA. If they don’t win on Saturday, 9-3 is a real possibility in Athens. That might still be enough to get them in the playoff, but it won’t make many Bulldog fans happy. Power ranking the SEC after week 7: #1 - Texas A&M Why not? We need a larger body of work, to be sure. But it looks more and more like A&M’s performance against Missouri—efficient and explosive on offense, and suffocating on defense—is one of the most complete and dominant games we’ve seen out of any squad in the nation this year. They have to follow it up with some more big games, no doubt. But it’s encouraging that, upon Weigman’s return, the Aggies looked so dominant against a quality team. Again, there is more that has to be shown. But if that Mizzou game showed what the Aggies are going forward, there are almost no holes in this team—and those holes that are present are at spots that have been improving every single week. It’s looking more and more like the Ags may have the best defense in the conference, with down years in Athens and Tuscaloosa. They’re certainly more tested in that respect than others who may lay claim to that title. If the offense can keep up what they did against Mizzou, this Aggie team could be a conference title contender in year one under Mike Elko.
